    Effect of Heat Transfer on Free Surface Flow of a Jeffrey Fluid over a Deformable Permeable Bed

    Free surface flow of a conducting Jeffrey fluid in a channel is investigated. The channel is bounded below by a finite deformable porous layer. The governing equations are solved in the free flow region and deformable porous layer. The expressions for the velocity field and solid displacement are obtained. The effects of the Jeffrey parameter, viscosity parameter, the volume fraction component of the fluid on the velocity displacement and mass flux are discussed. It is found that the velocity increases with the increase in the non-Newtonian Jeffrey parameter. Keywords: Free surface flow; Jeffrey fluid; Porous layer; Permeable bed

    Correlation between malondialdehyde (MDA) and uric acid levels in preeclampsia

    Background: Hypertensive disorders of human pregnancy, such as preeclampsia, complicates a sizeable percentage of all pregnancies, need its early indication and warning. The aim of present study was to determine the association between lipid peroxidation product, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and serum uric acid levels in preeclampsia and find out any association between these two parameters in preeclampsia. Methods: Thirty preeclampsia and thirty gestational age matched normotensive pregnant women attending Narayana General Hospital, Nellore were included in the study. Serum MDA levels were measured by Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) method and serum uric acid levels were estimated by automated chemistry analyser using commercial kits. Results: Serum MDA (Mean±SEM 24.4±2.38 vs 7.9± 0.28 nmol/ml, p value < 0.000) and serum uric acid levels (7.2 ± 0.25 vs 3.9 ± 0.14 mg/dl, p value <0.000) were significantly elevated in preeclampsia cases when compared with that of normotensive pregnant women. A weak positive correlation between serum uric acid and serum MDA (r value 0.065, p value 0.734) was noticed in preeclampsia.Conclusion: Serum MDA and uric acid may be included as additional markers for screening and progression of preeclampsia, thereby helpful in effectively treating the condition at an early stage.

    Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is an increasing public health concern worldwide. It is one of the most important causes of infectious morbidity and mortality. Genital TB is one form of extra pulmonary TB and is not uncommon, particularly in communities where pulmonary TB is prevalent. The objective of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of female genital tuberculosis in Hyderabad and its presentational symptoms and methods of diagnosis.Methods: A total of 1102 cases of suspected genital TB who had been registered and treated in the AIMSR and few selected government urban health post and private hospitals and clinics in different zones of Hyderabad, from 2012 January to 2013 March were retrospectively and prospectively studied. From this group, 23 women were diagnosed as having genital TB based on the standard pathological and microbiological criteria of tissue specimens. Results:Out of 23 cases diagnosed as having genital tuberculosis, 3 patients (13.04 %) presented with abdominal or pelvic pain. In 17cases (73.91%) tuberculosis was diagnosed during studies performed to evaluate the cause of their infertility, and the most common diagnostic procedure was endometrial curettage. Remaining 3 cases (13.05 %) have past, present or contact history of tuberculosis. Female genital TB accounted for 2.08 % of all tuberculosis patients in this study.Conclusions: This study indicates the presence of a strong relationship between genital TB and infertility; therefore genital TB would be more frequently diagnosed if this possibility was considered in the evaluation of every infertile patient in areas where tuberculosis is endemic

    An experimental study of the smectic A-smectic C transitions in monolayer, partially bilayer and bilayer systems

    The smectic A-smectic C (A-C) transition in several compounds has been shown to be mean-field-like (MF) with a substantial tricritical crossover effect. However, a simple MF behaviour, i.e., with negligible tricritical influence, had not been reported till recently. The heat capacity measurements of the MIT group in two compounds exhibiting the bilayer A2-C2 transition revealed such a behaviour. It is of interest to investigate whether a simple MF behaviour can be observed for partially bilayer AdminusCd and monolayer A1-C1 transitions also. We report the first systematic order parameter measurements in the vicinity of the A2-C2, Ad-Cd and A1-C1 transitions. The data analysed in terms of power law and extended mean field expressions provide clear evidence of a simple MF behaviour in all three cases. The significance of this result is discussed

    Observation of the Smectic C -- Smectic I Critical Point

    We report the first observation of the smectic C--smectic I (C--I) critical point by Xray diffraction studies on a binary system. This is in confirmity with the theoretical idea of Nelson and Halperin that coupling to the molecular tilt should induce hexatic order even in the C phase and as such both C and I (a tilted hexatic phase) should have the same symmetry.     Cytogenetic characterization and H-ras associated transformation of immortalized human mammary epithelial cells

    INTRODUCTION: Immortalization is a key step in malignant transformation, but immortalization alone is insufficient for transformation. Human mammary epithelial cell (HMEC) transformation is a complex process that requires additional genetic changes beyond immortalization and can be accomplished in vitro by accumulation of genetic changes and expression of H-ras. METHODS: HMEC were immortalized by serial passaging and transduction with the catalytic subunit of the human telomerase gene (hTERT). The immortalized cells were passaged in vitro and studied by a combination of G- banding and Spectral Karyotyping (SKY). H-ras transduced, hTERT immortalized cells were cloned in soft agar and injected into nude mice. Extensive analysis was performed on the tumors that developed in nude mice, including immunohistochemistry and western blotting. RESULTS: Immortal HMEC alone were not tumorigenic in γ-irradiated nude mice and could not grow in soft agar. Late passage hTERT immortalized HMEC from a donor transduced with a retroviral vector containing the mutant, autoactive, human H-ras61L gene acquired anchorage independent growth properties and the capacity for tumorigenic growth in vivo. The tumors that developed in the nude mice were poorly differentiated epithelial carcinomas that continued to overexpress ras. These cells were resistant to doxorubicin mediated G1/S phase arrest but were sensitive to treatment with a farnesyltransferase inhibitor. CONCLUSION: Some of the cytogenetic changes are similar to what is observed in premalignant and malignant breast lesions. Despite these changes, late passage immortal HMEC are not tumorigenic and could only be transformed with overexpression of a mutant H-ras oncogene

The variation of electrophoretic yield with (i) concentration of suspension, (ii) extent of grinding the suspension, (iii) temperature of the suspension, and (iv) electrode separation was studied. The effect of addition of glycol monethyl ether was also investigated. Although this principle is not controversial in the abstract, it is commonly ignored in professional discourse and doctrine. This article explains the basic notion of organizational loyalty and identifies some mistaken tendencies in discourse and doctrine, especially the Managerialist Fallacy that leads lawyers to conflate the client organization with its senior managers. The article then applies the basic notion to some hard cases, concluding with a critical appraisal of the rationale for confidentiality with organizational clients

    Federal Transfers and Fiscal Discipline in India: An Empirical Evaluation

    This article examines the relationship between federal transfers and fiscal deficits in India. The current system of transfers has been criticized on the grounds that it distorts the incentives for states to promote fiscal discipline. We analyze the relationship between transfers, state domestic product, and fiscal deficit for a panel of states during the period 1990 to 2010. The article finds a positive long-run relationship and bidirectional causality between primary/gross fiscal deficits and non-plan transfers. Further, there is a negative long-run relationship and one-way causality from state domestic product to transfers. These results are confirmed by multivariate cointegration analysis, which finds a long-run relationship between fiscal transfers, state product per capita, and state primary deficit. The evidence in the article is consistent with the system of fiscal transfers being ‘‘gap filling.’
