    Effect of solar activity on the morphology of 7320 Å dayglow emission

    A comprehensive model is developed to study the 7320 Å dayglow emission. The emission profiles are obtained with the help of the recently developed Solar2000 EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet) flux model. These emission profiles are used to construct the morphology of this emission between equator and 45° N in the Northern Hemisphere. A span of five years (2001–2005) is chosen to study the effect of solar activity on the morphology of this emission. The morphology is studied on 3 April which lies under the equinox conditions. In 2001, the solar F10.7 index on the chosen date was as high as 223.1 which is the case of solar maximum. It is found that the intensity of this emission does not vary linearly with the F10.7 solar index. The morphology shows that the region of maximum emission expands towards the higher latitudes as the F10.7 index increases

    Modelling and Simulation of Current Source Converter based Dynamic Voltage Restorer for Voltage Regulation cum Harmonics Mitigation

    The modern electric power distribution system faces lots of power quality (PQ) problems such as short and long duration voltage variations, voltage imbalance, waveform distortions, impulsive and oscillatory transients and voltage flicker etc. The custom power devices (CPD) have been designed and developed with the aim of mitigating these problems. The major CPDs introduced so far include distribution-static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM), dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), unified power quality conditioners (UPQC), active power filters (APF) etc.  However, most of these CPDs are designed and implemented using voltage source converter (VSC) topology. Although lots of research works have been carried out for realizing DVR system based on VSC topology, not much research work has been reported on the application of CSC topology in DVR system over the last one decade. Through this paper, it has been attempted to develop a model of DVR system based on CSC topology capable of performing dual power quality enhancement tasks viz. voltage regulation and harmonics mitigation at a power distribution system catering power to a variety of loads. The DVR system has been modeled and simulated in the MATLAB / Simulink platform and the simulation results reveal the effectiveness and validity of the proposed model for use in power distribution system

    On calibrated weights in stratified sampling

    In this paper, we propose a calibration estimator of population mean in stratified sampling using the known mean and variance information from multi-auxiliary variables. The problem of determining the optimum calibrated weights is formulated as a Nonlinear Programming Problem (NLPP) that is solved using the Lagrange multiplier technique. Numerical example with real data is presented to illustrate the computational details of the proposed estimator. A comparison study is also carried out using real and simulated data to evaluate the performance and the usefulness of the proposed estimator. The study reveals that the proposed estimator with multi-auxiliary information is more efficient estimator of the population mean as it provides least estimated variance and highest gain in relative efficiency (RE).     Severe malaria - a case of fatal Plasmodium knowlesi infection with post-mortem findings: a case report.

    BACKGROUND: Zoonotic malaria caused by Plasmodium knowlesi is an important, but newly recognized, human pathogen. For the first time, post-mortem findings from a fatal case of knowlesi malaria are reported here. CASE PRESENTATION: A formerly healthy 40 year-old male became symptomatic 10 days after spending time in the jungle of North Borneo. Four days later, he presented to hospital in a state of collapse and died within two hours. He was hyponatraemic and had elevated blood urea, potassium, lactate dehydrogenase and amino transferase values; he was also thrombocytopenic and eosinophilic. Dengue haemorrhagic shock was suspected and a post-mortem examination performed. Investigations for dengue virus were negative. Blood for malaria parasites indicated hyperparasitaemia and single species P. knowlesi infection was confirmed by nested-PCR. Macroscopic pathology of the brain and endocardium showed multiple petechial haemorrhages, the liver and spleen were enlarged and lungs had features consistent with ARDS. Microscopic pathology showed sequestration of pigmented parasitized red blood cells in the vessels of the cerebrum, cerebellum, heart and kidney without evidence of chronic inflammatory reaction in the brain or any other organ examined. Brain sections were negative for intracellular adhesion molecule-1. The spleen and liver had abundant pigment containing macrophages and parasitized red blood cells. The kidney had evidence of acute tubular necrosis and endothelial cells in heart sections were prominent. CONCLUSIONS: The overall picture in this case was one of systemic malaria infection that fit the WHO classification for severe malaria. Post-mortem findings in this case were unexpectedly similar to those that define fatal falciparum malaria, including cerebral pathology. There were important differences including the absence of coma despite petechial haemorrhages and parasite sequestration in the brain. These results suggest that further study of knowlesi malaria will aid the interpretation of, often conflicting, information on malaria pathophysiology in humans
