Proof of two conjectures of Zuber on fully packed loop configurations
Two conjectures of Zuber [``On the counting of fully packed loops
configurations. Some new conjectures,'' preprint] on the enumeration of
configurations in the fully packed loop model on the square grid with periodic
boundary conditions, which have a prescribed linkage pattern, are proved.
Following an idea of de Gier [``Loops, matchings and alternating-sign
matrices,'' Discrete Math., to appear], the proofs are based on bijections
between such fully packed loop configurations and rhombus tilings, and the
hook-content formula for semistandard tableaux.Comment: 20 pages; AmS-LaTe
Proof of a determinant evaluation conjectured by Bombieri, Hunt and van der Poorten
A determinant evaluation is proven, a special case of which establishes a
conjecture of Bombieri, Hunt, and van der Poorten (Experimental Math\. {\bf 4}
(1995), 87--96) that arose in the study of Thue's method of approximating
algebraic numbers.Comment: AMSTe
Some determinants of path generating functions
We evaluate four families of determinants of matrices, where the entries are
sums or differences of generating functions for paths consisting of up-steps,
down-steps and level steps. By specialisation, these determinant evaluations
have numerous corollaries. In particular, they cover numerous determinant
evaluations of combinatorial numbers - most notably of Catalan, ballot, and of
Motzkin numbers - that appeared previously in the literature.Comment: 35 pages, AmS-TeX; minor corrections; final version to appear in Adv.
