A Current Induced Transition in atomic-sized contacts of metallic Alloys

    Get PDF
We have measured conductance histograms of atomic point contacts made from the noble-transition metal alloys CuNi, AgPd, and AuPt for a concentration ratio of 1:1. For all alloys these histograms at low bias voltage (below 300 mV) resemble those of the noble metals whereas at high bias (above 300 mV) they resemble those of the transition metals. We interpret this effect as a change in the composition of the point contact with bias voltage. We discuss possible explanations in terms of electromigration and differential diffusion induced by current heating.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Sleepy scribes and clever critics : a classification of conjectures on the text of the New Testament

    Get PDF
This article presents a classification of conjectures on the text of the New Testament. It focusses on the types of arguments used by conjectural critics. The argumentation for a conjecture basically comprises (1) the perception of a problem (or problems) in the transmitted text and (2) the suggestion of a cause (or causes) for the supposed scribal change. Type (or types) of perceived problems and of supposed causes are classified, and illustrated with a range of important conjectures.http://booksandjournals.brillonline.com/content/journals/156853652017-01-31hb201

Paragraphos, not obelos, in codex vaticanus

There are serious problems with P. Payne's discussion of ‘distigmai' in Codex Vaticanus, and more in particular with his identification and interpretation of so-called ‘distigme-obelos' combinations. The ‘distigmai' remain elusive and any ‘distigme-obelos' is coincidental

Trajectories in the History of Textual Scholarship on Mark’s Endings:A Reconsideration

    No full text
This article reconsiders the history of textual scholarship on the issue of Mark’s endings. Particular attention is given to the period from the sixteenth to the late-eighteenth century, when Birch discovered that Codex Vaticanus does not contain the traditional ending as found in the Textus Receptus. Although direct attestation of the absence in Greek manuscripts was unknown to most scholars of that time, textual critics did in fact discuss the various Markan endings, informed as they were by ancient versions and patristic sources. Our contribution presents the opinions of important scholars, which in many ways anticipate discussions and arguments persisting till today. It aims to provide an exploratory overview of the scholarly history of Mark’s endings and to show the elements that led to the so-called ‘turning point’ in the late-eighteenth century

A Forgotten Pioneer: Granville Penn and the Victory of Vaticanus

    No full text
Granville Penn (1761-1844) was an amateur textual critic, who intended to revise the English translation of the new Testament, and brought in evidence from Codex Vaticanus (B03) in order to support his argument. Already in the nineteenth century his work was largely forgotten, but it does form evidence of the growing scholarly estimation of the manuscript in his day. Penn's numerous conjectures offer an interesting view of his approach, and his revision project casts light on the intellectual climate of the time. The fact that he was one of the first to recognize the importance of B03, but did not have a lasting impact on text-critical scholarship, indicates that he was a pioneer who correctly estimated the importance of this one manuscript, but worked in isolation
