    Damping Properties vs. Structure Fineness of the High-zinc Aluminum Alloys

    The subject of this study is the presentation of relation between the degree of structure fineness and ultrasonic wave dampingcoefficient for the high-zinc aluminium alloys represented in this study by the sand mould cast alloy Al - 20 wt% Zn (AlZn20). Thestudied alloy was refined with a modifying (Al,Zn)-Ti3 ternary master alloy, introducing Ti in the amount of 400 pm into metal. Based on the analysis of the initial and modified alloy macrostructure images and ultrasonic testing, it was found that the addition of (Al,Zn)-Ti3 master alloy, alongside a significant fragmentation of grains, does not reduce the coefficient of ultrasonic waves with a frequency of 1 MHz

    Quantum creep and quantum creep transitions in 1D sine-Gordan chains

    Discrete sine-Gordon (SG) chains are studied with path-integral molecular dynamics. Chains commensurate with the substrate show the transition from collective quantum creep to pinning at bead masses slightly larger than those predicted from the continuous SG model. Within the creep regime, a field-driven transition from creep to complete depinning is identified. The effects of disorder in the external potential on the chain's dynamics depend on the potential's roughness exponent HH, i.e., quantum and classical fluctuations affect the current self-correlation functions differently for H=1/2H = 1/2.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Modelling of the crystallization front – particles interactions in ZnAl/(SiC)p composites

    The presented work focuses on solid particle interactions with the moving crystallization front during a solidification of the metal matrix composite. The current analyses were made for silicon carbide particles and ZnAl alloy with different additions of aluminium. It was found, that the chemical composition of the metal matrix influences the behaviour of SiC particles. At the same time calculations of the forces acting on a single particle near the crystallization front were performed.     Building health literacy in a Polish region: protocol for the POWER project in Lower Silesia

    There is a high prevalence of premature mortality and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours in Lower Silesia in Poland (regional capital is the city of Wroclaw). One plausible reason is low health literacy among this population. Health literacy is one of the most important elements of public health and health promotion endeavours. It can be conceptualised as abroad range of cognitive and social skills as well as knowledge needed by an individual to maintain good health, prevent or manage diseases, and effectively engage with healthcare professionals and resources. The Health Promotion Foundation (HPF), in collaboration with regional institutions and organisations, initiated in 2017 a broad initiative to improve health in this region. The overarching aim of the wider programme is to improve the quality of care among primary care patients. The project stream led by HPF aims to improve knowledge and health-related competences in the population of primary care patients in Lower Silesia. It involves (1) needs assessment based on the analysis of data on health status and neds from 50 participating primary care clinics, followed by (2) development of tailored face-to-face workshops that will be delivered by trained public health students, (3) who will be mentored using train-the-trainer approach. It is anticipated that the project will impact on three main areas in the long term. First, it will lead to creation of a package of workshops that could be delivered to other primary care patients. Second, it will create opportunities for students majoring in public health in the region to become directly involved in activities focused on health education and promotion. Three, it is anticipated that the project will lead to improvements in health and wellbeing among the participating patient groups. The present report describes the scope and method of the project

    Synthesis and properties of epitaxial thin films of c-axis oriented metastable four-layered hexagonal BaRuO3BaRuO3

    We have grown epitaxial thin films of c-axis oriented metastable four-layered hexagonal BaRuO3BaRuO3 on a (111) SrTiO3SrTiO3 substrate by 90° off-axis sputtering techniques. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the films are single domains of c-axis four-layered hexagonal structures with an in-plane epitaxial arrangement of BaRuO3BaRuO3 [20]∥SrTiO3[110].[21̄1̄0]∥SrTiO3[110]. Surfaces with smooth terraces having a step height of a half unit cell (∼4.7 Å) have been observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. The in-plane electrical resistivity of the films is metallic, with a room temperature value of 810 μΩ cm and slightly curved temperature dependence. Their magnetic susceptibility is Pauli paramagnetic.     This paper aims at presenting the first steps towards a formulation of the Exact Renormalization Group Equation in the Hopf algebra setting of Connes and Kreimer. It mostly deals with some algebraic preliminaries allowing to formulate perturbative renormalization within the theory of differential equations. The relation between renormalization, formulated as a change of boundary condition for a differential equation, and an algebraic Birkhoff decomposition for rooted trees is explicited

    The prediction of fatigue using speech as a biosignal

    Automatic systems for estimating operator fatigue have application in safety-critical environments. We develop and evaluate a system to detect fatigue from speech recordings collected from speakers kept awake over a 60-hour period. A binary classification system (fatigued/not-fatigued) based on time spent awake showed good discrimination, with 80 % unweighted accuracy using raw features, and 90 % with speaker-normalized features. We describe the data collection, feature analysis, machine learning and cross-validation used in the study. Results are promising for real-world applications in domains such as aerospace, transportation and mining where operators are in regular verbal communication as part of their normal working activities
