[Review of] Nasario Garcia. Recuerdos de los Viejitos, Tales of the Rio Puerco
The editor indicated in his foreword that he had several purposes for collecting and assembling the sixty-four stories that comprise this book. First, he had noted that little had been written concerning the history of the Rio Puerco region of New Mexico, and the little that had been written had not included the actual first person narratives of the people who had lived there. These, the collector believed, the ... vibrant oral history and literature from a previously unrecorded area can now further enrich the age old cultural heritage of Hispanic New Mexico
2000 Kansas Performance Tests with Alfalfa Varieties
The Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station
established an official alfalfa performance testing
program in 1980 to provide Kansas growers with
unbiased performance comparisons on alfalfa
varieties marketed in the state. Each year, private
companies are asked to enter varieties voluntarily
at the locations slated for establishment that year. Descriptive information is presented with the results for each test. This information, including soil type,
establishment methods, fertilization, pest control, irrigation,
harvest dates, and growing conditions unique to that
location, can help explain test and/or variety performance. Forage yields were estimated by harvesting four replications
of each variety with a plot harvester

2004 Kansas Performance Tests with Winter Wheat Varieties
The Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station annually
compares both new and currently grown varieties in the
state’s major crop-producing areas. These performance
tests generate unbiased performance information designed
to help Kansas growers select wheat varieties suited for
their area and conditions
Strategies to Increase the Number of Minority Teachers in the Public Schools
There can be very little argument that in recent years the teaching profession has become whiter and whiter as fewer minorities and people of color have entered and remained in the teaching profession, and as such, the percentage of white Americans in the field has continued to increase. Out of the approximately 2.3 million K-12 teachers in 1987, only 10.3 percent were minority group members. Current estimates report that by the mid 1990s this number will be further reduced to about five percent.[1] If this trend is not reversed, the teaching profession will be close to being entirely white by early in the twenty-first century. The fact that this is occurring at a time when minority populations of students in these same schools are dramatically increasing makes this situation even more confounding. Table 1 illustrates the relative populations by ethnicity of students and teachers in the public schools today.[2] As can be seen from this table, the relative population of the teaching force is not even close to being representative of the composition of the student body in terms of ethnicity
[Review of] Rudolfo A. Anaya. Heart of Aztlan
Heart of Aztlan is a novel which portrays life in Barelas, a barrio of Albuquerque, during the post-Korean War period. While the characters within the novel are fictitious, the situations in which they found themselves were only too real. The mood of the novel was one of hope while the characters continually found themselves in a situation of apparent hopelessness. The author\u27s dedication, perhaps better than any other words, summed up this seeming paradox. This book is dedicated to the good people of Barelas ... and to people everywhere who have struggled for freedom, dignity, and the right to self determination
Explanationism, Super-Explanationism, Ecclectic Explanationism: Persistent Problems on Both Sides
We argue that explanationist views in epistemology continue to face persistent challenges to both their necessity and their sufficiency. This is so despite arguments offered by Kevin McCain in a paper recently published in this journal which attempt to show otherwise. We highlight ways in which McCain’s attempted solutions to problems we had previously raised go awry, while also presenting a novel challenge for all contemporary explanationist views
