    Wage Penalties in Major League Baseball

    This study examines discrimination both by race and by foreign-born status in the context of Major League Baseball (MLB). The goal of this study is to determine if employer-based discrimination is present in MLB by looking for average differences in wages amongst groups and by looking for differences in returns to on-field output for players of different groups. MLB is an interesting industry to look for evidence of discrimination because it is one of the few industries where employee output is clear to see and compensation information is widely available, which is unusual for labor market studies. Sports is an interesting laboratory for economic ideas because even though the players make up a small percentage of people in America and earn substantially more than the average person, sports in America are thought of as capturing the ideals of America where hard work and dedication are rewarded (Kahn 2000)

    Insights into the decontamination of cocaine-positive hair samples

    A highly discussed step in hair sample preparation for forensic analytics is the applied decontamination. The here presented investigations aim to gain insight and give recommendations on how to conduct this decontamination for the analysis of cocaine consumption in hair. Key insights were gained from the investigation of cocaine consumer hair, which was artificially contaminated in a humid atmosphere with 13C6 labelled cocaine and from cocaine powder contaminated hair. Several decontamination protocols were investigated, whereby the usage of a decontamination protocol consisting of multiple short repetitive washes allowed to visualize the wash-out of (13C6-) cocaine. Multiple methanol washes proved to be an efficient and simple decontamination approach. Our findings showed that decontamination protocols can successfully wash-out recent cocaine contaminations. They were observed to be rather quickly washed-out, whereas cocaine from consumption or “older” cocaine contaminations were shown to eliminate both at a constant rate (from inner hair compartments). Thus, the usage of decontamination protocols to differentiate between consumption and contamination was shown to be limited. As contamination can happen any time at any level, only the application of elaborated decision trees, based on cocaine metabolite ratios and thresholds, can provide the distinction between consumption and contamination. Thus, the authors highly recommend the usage of such tools on all hair samples analyzed for cocaine consumption

    Determination of the Time since Deposition of Blood-traces in a Forensic Context: Application of Untargeted LC-HR-MS/MS Metabolomics Profiling

    Being able to attest when a bloodstain was deposited at a crime scene can be invaluable to a prosecution process, and methods to provide that information have long been desired. Determining the Time since Deposition (TsD) of a trace would allow placing a subject both in space and time to the crime scene - or prove that a trace left by that person was unrelated to it, because it was deposited before or after the time a crime had occurred. To this day, no method for TsD-determination has made its way into routine forensic casework, mainly because of the numerous challenges that await when trying to understand and account for all the influencing and confounding factors that affect the aging process (such as, e.g., temperature, UV-light exposure, or humidity). Here, we present an untargeted metabolomics-based study using liquid-chromatography high-resolution mass-spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and data-dependent acquisition to analyze blood samples aged under two distinctly different storage conditions over 48 weeks. Global differences in age- and storage-dependent changes in blood metabolomes were described, and TsD-classification strategies based on qualitative and quantitative assessment of molecular features (MFs) have been proposed. Based on the selected criteria to best predict the TsD, the dipeptide Phenylalanylalanine (PheAla) can be considered as a promising candidate for TsD prediction. In essence, changes in the blood metabolome dynamics showed a strong association with increasing TsD, but significant differences depending on storage conditioning were observed, facilitating the need to study further the influence of (individual) influencing factors on TsD-determination

They are characterized by the presence of highly concentrated saline solutions and evaporitic minerals, and have been cited in the geologic literature as present-day representations of hyper-arid regional paleohydrogeology, paleoclimatology, coastal processes, and sedimentation in the geologic record. It is therefore important that a correct understanding of the origin and development of these features be achieved. Knowledge of the source of solutes is an important first step in understanding these features. Historically, two theories have been advanced as to the main source of solutes in sabkha brines: an early concept entailing seawater as the obvious source, and a more recent and dynamic theory involving ascending geologic brine forced upward into the base of the sabkha by a regional hydraulic gradient in the underlying formations. Ra-226 could uniquely distinguish between these sources under certain circumstances, as it is typically present at elevated activity of hundreds to thousands of Bq/m3 (Becquerels per cubic meter) in subsurface formation brines; at exceedingly low activities in open ocean and coastal water; and not significantly supplied to water from recently formed marine sedimentary framework material. The coastal marine sabkha of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi was used to test this hypothesis. The distribution of Ra-226 in 70 samples of sabkha brine (mean: 700 Bq/m3), 7 samples of underlying deeper formation brine (mean: 3416 Bq/m3), the estimated value of seawater (< 16 Bq/m3) and an estimate of supply from sabkha sedimentary framework grains (<~6 Bq/m3) provide the first direct evidence that ascending geologic brine contributes significantly to the solutes of this sabkha system

    Quality Control in the Production Process of SMC Lightweight Material

    The use of sheet molding compounds (SMC) in diverse applications requires different specific material properties for each type of finished parts. These material properties have to be assured by a reliable quality control, which does not only have to be performed for the prefabricated SMC itself but also during the production process of the semi-finished material. This is of high importance because quality fluctuations and defects can already occur during the production of the semi-finished SMC. This results in high scrap rates as well as machine failure and can additionally cause further problems in the following process steps. Hence, an inline quality control can help to establish objective quality criteria for semi-finished SMC and can enable controlled and stable production processes. Therefore, this paper deals with quality assurance in the production process of semi-finished sheet molding compounds. Air entrapping and fiber distribution are identified as two parameters that influence the quality of the semi-finished product significantly. In addition, the early detection of a pending carrier foil failure can help to establish a stable process. The focus of this paper lies on how various, individually adapted metrology systems can be used for the detection of the respective characteristics and integrated into the production process of the semi-finished SMC. In particular, optical systems, such as area scan cameras and laser stripe sensors as well as thermographic sensors are discussed and possibilities for application-related sensor data evaluation are shown. This helps to reduce the scrap rates of parts and to establish a further automated production process
