    Selective activation of JNK/SAPK by interleukin-1 in rabbit liver is mediated by MKK7

    AbstractActivation of jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK) by interleukin-1 (IL-1) has been reported in many cells and in rabbit liver. Here we report selective activation of JNK/SAPK, without activation of p38 or p42 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), by IL-1 in rabbit liver. We identified an IL-1 regulated JNK/SAPK activator present in rabbit liver using S Sepharose chromatography. It was purified and immunoprecipitated by two antisera to MAP kinase kinase 7 (MKK7). It was not recognised by an antibody to MKK4. We conclude that MKK7 is the activator of JNK/SAPK activated by IL-1 in liver and that JNK/SAPK is the only MAPK activated by IL-1 in liver

    Strategies for achieving viral hepatitis C micro-elimination in the Netherlands.

    The Netherlands is striving to achieve national elimination of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) as one of the first countries worldwide. The favorable HCV epidemiology with both low prevalence and incidence, together with access to care and treatment, present excellent conditions to further build on towards this objective. The Dutch national plan on viral hepatitis, introduced in 2016, defines targets in the HCV healthcare cascade and provides a structural framework for the development of elimination activities. Since many different stakeholders are involved in HCV care in the Netherlands, focus has been placed on micro-elimination initiatives as a pragmatic and efficient approach. These numerous micro-eliminations projects have brought the Netherlands closer to HCV elimination. In the near future, efforts specifically have to be made in order to optimize case-finding strategies and to successfully accomplish the nationwide implementation of the registration and monitoring system of viral hepatitis mono-infections, before this final goal can be reached. The upcoming years will then elucidate if the Dutch' hands on approach has resulted in sufficient progress against HCV and if the Netherlands will lead the way towards nationwide HCV elimination

    Geometric representations for minimalist grammars

    We reformulate minimalist grammars as partial functions on term algebras for strings and trees. Using filler/role bindings and tensor product representations, we construct homomorphisms for these data structures into geometric vector spaces. We prove that the structure-building functions as well as simple processors for minimalist languages can be realized by piecewise linear operators in representation space. We also propose harmony, i.e. the distance of an intermediate processing step from the final well-formed state in representation space, as a measure of processing complexity. Finally, we illustrate our findings by means of two particular arithmetic and fractal representations.Comment: 43 pages, 4 figure

    Comet 322P/<i>SOHO</i>1: an asteroid with the smallest perihelion distance?

    We observed comet 322P/SOHO 1 (P/1999 R1) from the ground and with the Spitzer Space Telescope when it was between 2.2 and 1.2 au from the Sun. These are the first observations of any Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)-discovered periodic comet by a non-solar observatory and allow us to investigate its behavior under typical cometary circumstances. 322P appeared inactive in all images. Its light curve suggests a rotation period of 2.8 ± 0.3 hr and has an amplitude ≳0.3 mag, implying a density of at least 1000 kg m−3, considerably higher than that of any known comet. It has average colors of g' - r'=0.52 ± 0.04 and r' - i' = 0.03 ± 0.06. We converted these to Johnson colors and found that the V − R color is consistent with average cometary colors, but R − I is somewhat bluer; these colors are most similar to V- and Q-type asteroids. Modeling of the optical and IR photometry suggests it has a diameter of 150–320 m and a geometric albedo of 0.09–0.42, with diameter and albedo inversely related. Our upper limits to any undetected coma are still consistent with a sublimation lifetime shorter than the typical dynamical lifetimes for Jupiter-family comets. These results suggest that 322P may be of asteroidal origin and only active in the SOHO fields of view via processes different from the volatile-driven activity of traditional comets. If so, it has the smallest perihelion distance of any known asteroid

    We present an in situ uniaxial pressure device optimized for small angle x-ray and neutron scattering experiments at low-temperatures and high magnetic fields. A stepper motor generates force, which is transmitted to the sample via a rod with an integrated transducer that continuously monitors the force. The device has been designed to generate forces up to 200 N in both compressive and tensile configurations, and a feedback control allows operating the system in a continuous-pressure mode as the temperature is changed. The uniaxial pressure device can be used for various instruments and multiple cryostats through simple and exchangeable adapters. It is compatible with multiple sample holders, which can be easily changed depending on the sample properties and the desired experiment and allow rapid sample changes

    Changing a semantics: opportunism or courage?

    The generalized models for higher-order logics introduced by Leon Henkin, and their multiple offspring over the years, have become a standard tool in many areas of logic. Even so, discussion has persisted about their technical status, and perhaps even their conceptual legitimacy. This paper gives a systematic view of generalized model techniques, discusses what they mean in mathematical and philosophical terms, and presents a few technical themes and results about their role in algebraic representation, calibrating provability, lowering complexity, understanding fixed-point logics, and achieving set-theoretic absoluteness. We also show how thinking about Henkin's approach to semantics of logical systems in this generality can yield new results, dispelling the impression of adhocness. This paper is dedicated to Leon Henkin, a deep logician who has changed the way we all work, while also being an always open, modest, and encouraging colleague and friend.Comment: 27 pages.     Novel methodology for predicting the critical salt concentration of bubble coalescence inhibition

    Bubble coalescence in some salt solutions can be inhibited if the salt concentration reaches a critical concentration Ccr. There are three models available for Ccr in the literature, but they fail to predict Ccr correctly. The first two models employ the van der Waals attraction power laws to establish Ccr from the discriminant of quadratic or cubic polynomials. To improve the two models, the third model uses the same momentum balance equation of the previous models but different intermolecular force generated by water hydration with exponential decaying. The third prediction for Ccr requires the experimental input for film rupture thickness and is incomplete. We show further in this paper that the third model is incorrect. We propose a novel methodology for determining C cr which resolves the mathematical uncertainties in modeling C cr and can explicitly predict it from any relevant intermolecular forces. The methodology is based on the discovery that Ccr occurs at the local maximum of the balance equation for the capillary pressure, disjoining pressure, and pressure of the Gibbs-Marangoni stress. The novel generic approach is successfully validated using nonlinear equations for complicated disjoining pressure
