    Surface Influence on Flux Penetration into HTS Bulks

    The influence of surface treatment on AC loss in melt-processed quasi-single crystal HTS was investigated with resonance oscillations technique. We have found that amplitude dependencies of AC loss on magnetic field amplitude become rather complicated after surface polishing. The experimental data show well distinguished dynamic crossover from absence of barrier at low rates of field variation to its appearence at higher rates. An explaination of such a dynamic surface barrier appearance based on consideration of along surface vortex propagation was suggested.Comment: 2 pages with 1 EPS figure, to be presented at LT2

    Magnetic heat conductivity in CaCu2O3\rm\bf CaCu_2O_3: linear temperature dependence

    We present experimental results for the thermal conductivity κ\kappa of the pseudo 2-leg ladder material CaCu2O3\rm CaCu_2O_3. The strong buckling of the ladder rungs renders this material a good approximation to a S=1/2S=1/2 Heisenberg-chain. Despite a strong suppression of the thermal conductivity of this material in all crystal directions due to inherent disorder, we find a dominant magnetic contribution κmag\kappa_\mathrm{mag} along the chain direction. κmag\kappa_\mathrm{mag} is \textit{linear} in temperature, resembling the low-temperature limit of the thermal Drude weight DthD_\mathrm{th} of the S=1/2S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. The comparison of κmag\kappa_\mathrm{mag} and DthD_\mathrm{th} yields a magnetic mean free path of lmag22±5l_\mathrm{mag}\approx 22 \pm 5 \AA, in good agreement with magnetic measurements.Comment: appears in PR

    X-ray absorption spectroscopy on layered cobaltates Na_xCoO_2

    Measurements of polarization and temperature dependent soft x-ray absorption have been performed on Na_xCoO_2 single crystals with x=0.4 and x=0.6. They show a deviation of the local trigonal symmetry of the CoO_6 octahedra, which is temperature independent in a temperature range between 25 K and 372 K. This deviation was found to be different for Co^{3+} and Co^{4+} sites. With the help of a cluster calculation we are able to interpret the Co L_{23}-edge absorption spectrum and find a doping dependent energy splitting between the t_{2g} and the e_g levels (10Dq) in Na_xCoO_2.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Studies of cracking behavior in melt-processed YBCO bulk superconductors

    An important phenomenon in bulk superconductors fabricated by top-seeded-melt growth (TSMG) is the formation of cracks due to the inherent brittleness of the YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Y-123) phase matrix. These form during the fabrication of the superconducting monolith and play an important role in the limitation of current flow. However, cracks may also form during cooling cycles of the sample to liquid nitrogen temperatures. In this investigation, macrocracks along the c-direction, in particular were analyzed microscopically before and after cooling. In addition we attempt to resolve the c-axis macrocrack formation pattern using the magnetoscan technique

    We present an experimental study of the dynamics of holes in the valence bands of zero-, one-, and two-dimensional undoped model cuprates, as expressed via the screening of a Cu 2p core hole. The response depends strongly upon the dimensionality and the details of the Cu-O-Cu network geometry and clearly goes beyond the present theoretical state-of-the-art description within the three-band d-p model
