Calorons and BPS monopoles with non-trivial holonomy in the confinement phase of SU(2) gluodynamics
With the help of the cooling method applied to SU(2) lattice gauge theory at
non-zero we present numerical evidence for the existence of
superpositions of Kraan-van Baal caloron (or BPS monopole pair) solutions with
non-trivial holonomy, which might constitute an important contribution to the

On Dirac sheet configurations of SU(2) lattice fields
Finite temperature Euclidean SU(2) lattice gauge fields close to the
deconfinement phase transition are subjected to cooling. We find relatively
stable or absolutely stable configurations with an action below the
one-instanton action both in the deconfinement and the
confinement phases. In this paper we attempt an interpretation of these lowest
action configurations. Their action is purely magnetic and amounts to
, where () is the timelike (spacelike)
lattice size, while the topological charge vanishes. In the confined phase part
of the corresponding lattice configurations turns out to be absolutely stable
with respect to the cooling process in which case Abelian projection reveals a
homogeneous, purely Abelian magnetic field closed over the "boundary" in one of
the spatial directions. Referring to the dyonic structure established for the
confinement phase near and based on the observation made for this phase
that such events below the instanton action emerge from
dyon-antidyon annihilation, the question of stability (metastability) is
discussed for both phases. The hypothetically different dyonic structure of the
deconfinement phase, inaccessible by cooling, could explain the metastability.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Abell 3627: A Nearby, X-ray Bright, and Massive Galaxy Cluster
The cluster A3627 was recently recognized to be a very massive, nearby
cluster in a galaxy survey close to the galactic plane. We are reporting on
ROSAT PSPC observations of this object which confirm that the cluster is indeed
very massive. The X-ray emission detected from the cluster extends over almost
1 degree in radius. The X-ray image is not spherically symmetric and shows
indications of an ongoing cluster merger. Due to the strong interstellar
absorption the spectral analysis and the gas temperature determination are
difficult. The data are consistent with an overall gas temperature in the range
5 to 10 keV. There are signs of temperature variations in the merger region. A
mass estimate based on the X-ray data yields values of \msu \ if extrapolated to the virial radius of Mpc. In
the ROSAT energy band (0.1 - 2.4 keV) the cluster emission yields a flux of
about erg s cm which makes A3627 the 6
brightest cluster in the ROSAT All Sky Survey. The cluster was missed in
earlier X-ray surveys because it was confused with a neighbouring X-ray bright,
galactic X-ray binary (1H1556-605). The large X-ray flux makes A3627 an

Osteoarthritis and a high-fat diet: the full 'OA syndrome' in a small animal model
Obesity is one of the main risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA) and due to the global rise in obesity this will increasingly contribute to OA development. The article of Griffin and co-workers in this issue of Arthritis Research and Therapy shows that a high-fat diet leads to obesity and OA in the studied animals and that this is related to alterations in locomotor function. Furthermore, a high-fat diet leads to pain sensitization and depression/anxiety-like behavior unrelated to structural OA changes in the knee. Their findings demonstrate that the majority of features of the human 'OA syndrome' can be reproduced in a small animal model
Calorons, Nahm's equations on S^1 and bundles over P^1xP^1
The moduli space of solutions to Nahm's equations of rank (k,k+j) on the
circle, and hence, of SU(2) calorons of charge (k,j), is shown to be equivalent
to the moduli of holomorphic rank 2 bundles on P^1xP^1 trivialized at infinity
with c_2=k and equipped with a flag of degree j along P^1x{0}. An explicit

HI Bright Galaxies in the Southern Zone of Avoidance
A blind survey for HI bright galaxies in the southern Zone of Avoidance, (212
deg < l < 36 deg; |b| < 5 deg), has been made with the 21 cm multibeam receiver
on the Parkes 64 m radiotelescope. The survey, sensitive to normal spiral
galaxies to a distance of about 40 Mpc and more nearby dwarfs, detected 110
galaxies. Of these, 67 have no counterparts in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic
Database. In general, the uncataloged galaxies lie behind thicker obscuration
than do the cataloged objects. All of the newly-discovered galaxies have HI
flux integrals more than an order of magnitude lower than the Circinus galaxy.
The survey recovers the Puppis cluster and foreground group (Kraan-Korteweg &
Huchtmeier 1992), and the Local Void remains empty. The HI mass function
derived for the sample is satisfactorily fit by a Schechter function with
parameters alpha = 1.51 +- 0.12, Phi* = 0.006 +- 0.003, and log M* = 9.7 +-

Loop expansion in Yang-Mills thermodynamics
We argue that a selfconsistent spatial coarse-graining, which involves
interacting (anti)calorons of unit topological charge modulus, implies that
real-time loop expansions of thermodynamical quantities in the deconfining
phase of SU(2) and SU(3) Yang-Mills thermodynamics are, modulo 1PI

Visible diode lasers can be used for flow cytometric immunofluorescence and DNA analysis
This report describes a feasibility study concerning the use of a visible diode laser for two important fluorescence applications in a flow cytometer. With a 3 mW 635 nm. diode laser, we performed immunofluorescence measurements using the fluorophore allophycocyanin (APC). We have measured CD8 positive lymphocytes with a two-step labeling procedure and the resulting histograms showed good separation between the negative cells and the dim and the bright fluorescent subpopulations. As a second fluorescence application, we chose DNA analysis with the recently developed DNA/ RNA stains TOTO-3 and TO-PRO-3. In our setup TO-PRO-3 yielded the best results with a CV of 3.4%. Our results indicate that a few milliwatts of 635 nm light from a visible diode laser is sufficient to do single color immunofluorescence measurements with allophycocyanin and DNA analysis with TO-PRO-3.
