Aggregation of dipolar colloidal particles: Geometric effects

To understand the importance of confinement and the influence of translational degrees of freedom on aggregation of dipolar colloidal particles, we calculate numerically-exact values for the mean encounter time for two nonspherically symmetric molecules to form a two-molecule cluster, regarded here as a precursor to aggregation. A lattice model is formulated in which the asymmetry of the molecules is accounted for by representing each as a "dimer" in the sense that each molecule is specified to occupy two adjacent lattice sites. The two dimers undergo simultaneous translation, and the mean times for their encounter are determined. Exact numerical results are obtained via application of the theory of finite Markov processes. The results allow one to examine in a detailed way the interplay among such factors as geometrical confinement, system size, translational motion, and specific orientational effects in influencing the aggregation event. The results are compared with previously reported theoretical predictions and experiments on the behavior of dipolar colloidal particles in the presence of an applied magnetic field

Efficiency of encounter-controlled reaction between diffusing reactants in a finite lattice: topology and boundary effects

The role of dimensionality (Euclidean versus fractal), spatial extent, boundary effects and system topology on the efficiency of diffusion-reaction processes involving two simultaneously-diffusing reactants is analyzed. We present numerically-exact values for the mean time to reaction, as gauged by the mean walklength before reactive encounter, obtained via application of the theory of finite Markov processes, and via Monte Carlo simulation. As a general rule, we conclude that for sufficiently large systems, the efficiency of diffusion-reaction processes involving two synchronously diffusing reactants (two-walker case) relative to processes in which one reactant of a pair is anchored at some point in the reaction space (one walker plus trap case) is higher, and is enhanced the lower the dimensionality of the system. This differential efficiency becomes larger with increasing system size and, for periodic systems, its asymptotic value may depend on the parity of the lattice. Imposing confining boundaries on the system enhances the differential efficiency relative to the periodic case, while decreasing the absolute efficiencies of both two-walker and one walker plus trap processes. Analytic arguments are presented to provide a rationale for the results obtained. From Section 8 to Starbucks: The Effects of Gentrification on Affordable Housing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

This dissertation examines gentrification in Pittsburgh, PA to determine if the process is reducing the amount of affordable housing for low-income groups. There has been considerable debate regarding the merits and consequences of gentrification for the economic development of cities and this research contributes to the discussion by uncovering how housing is affected in a Rust Belt city. The deindustrialized cities of the American Rust Belt have been largely ignored within the gentrification literature because of the population loss and economic slumps these metros have faced due to global restructuring of manufacturing industries. There are signs that many of these urban areas are making the shift to a postindustrial city and that people and capital may soon be returning to their downtowns. In light of the various development projects that have been implemented in places like Pittsburgh, it is important to understand how the urban form is restructured through the process of gentrification. I use various regression models, including OLS, spatial regression, and geographically weighted regression (GWR) to measure the effect of gentrification on affordable housing for three levels of low-income households. This research shows that gentrification is reducing the availability of affordable housing in the Pittsburgh metro, despite the presence of a soft housing market caused by high vacancy rates within the central city. Regression models show that the vacancy rates are likely reducing the reduction of affordable housing in various neighborhoods of the city, but that buffer of a soft housing market will most likely disappear as data show an increasing interest in moving into the city. The Pittsburgh metro area already has a shortage of extremely low-income affordable units and steps must be taken in Pittsburgh to ensure that low-income households can have affordable access to the city in the future

Взаємозв’язок рівня інтенсивності виробництва та результатів діяльності сільськогосподарських підприємств (Interconnection of the level of production intensity and results of activity of agricultural enterprises)

Метою дослідження є оцінка взаємозв’язку між рівнем інтенсивності виробництва та результатами діяльності аграрних підприємств та визначення економічних ефектів від підвищення цін на сільськогосподарську продукцію та ресурсів для її виробництва. На основі регресійного аналізу автором визначено ступінь та характер впливу витрат в розрахунку на гектар посіву (одну голову тварин на відгодівлі) на урожайність сільськогосподарських культур та продуктивність тварин. Кількісно ступінь наближення кореляційного зв’язку до функціональної лінійної залежності було оцінено за допомогою коефіцієнта кореляції Пірсона, а статистичну оцінку його значущості – за допомогою критерію Стьюдента. На основі аналізу динаміки параметрів рівнянь регресії за різні роки здійснено оцінку економічного ефекту від зростання цін на ресурси, які були використані у процесі виробництва, та визначено ступінь впливу на результативну ознаку інших факторів, окрім досліджуваного. Доповнення дослідження факторним аналізом дозволило автору визначити сукупний економічний ефект від зростання цін на сільськогосподарську продукцію та виробничі ресурси для її виробництва за 2005 – 2012 рр. Результатом проведеного дослідження є зроблений автором висновок, що економічні умови функціонування вітчизняних аграрних підприємств та їх можливості впровадження інтенсивних технологій у виробництво щорічно погіршуються, оскільки уподовж досліджуваного періоду зростання цін на виробничі ресурси відбувалось випереджальними темпами. Наукова новизна проведеного дослідження полягає у поєднанні методів регресійного, факторного та динамічного аналізу, що дозволило автору комплексно та системно оцінити перебіг означених процесів. Практична цінність виявлених тенденцій динаміки пара- метрів рівнянь регресії полягає в тому, що вони надають можливість розробити низку пропозицій щодо підтримання конкурентних позицій вітчизняних аграріїв на внутрішньому та світових ринках (The goal of the study is assessment of interconnection between the level of production intensity and results of activity of agrarian enterprises and identification of economic effects from increase of prices on agricultural products and resources for their production. Using the regression analysis the author identifies the degree and character of influence of expenditures per hectare of crop (one head of livestock) upon crop and livestock yield. Quantitatively, the degree of approximation of the correlation connection to functional linear dependence was assessed with the help of the Pearson correlation ratio and statistical assessment of its significance with the help of the Student criterion. On the basis of analysis of dynamics of parameters of regression equations for various years, the author conducts assessment of economic effect from growth of cost of resources used in the process of production and identifies the degree of influence of other the studied factors upon the resultant indicators. Supplementing the study with the factor analysis allowed the author identification of the aggregate economic effect from growth of prices of agricultural products and production resources for their production for 2005 – 2012. The result of the conducted study is the author’s conclusion that economic conditions of functioning of domestic agrarian enterprises and their possibilities of introduction intensive technologies into production deteriorate every year, since the growth of prices on production resources had an outstripping rate during the studied period. Scientific novelty of the conducted study lies in a combination of methods of the regression, factor and dynamic analysis, which allowed the author’s assessment of development of the said processes in a complex and as a system. Practical value of the revealed tendencies of dynamics of parameters of regression equations lies in the fact that they give a possibility to develop a number of proposals with respect to maintaining competitive positions of domestic agrarians in the domestic and world markets

ЗАБЕЗПЕЧЕННЯ ВЗАЄМОДІЇ ІНСТРУМЕНТІВ АГРАРНОЇ ПОЛІТИКИ ТА ЗАХОДІВ ДЕРЖАВНИХ СТРАТЕГІЧНИХ ПРОГРАМ РОЗВИТКУ АПК В УКРАЇНІ (ENSURING THE INTERACTION OF AGRICULTURAL POLICY TOOLS WITH MEASURES OF STATE STRATEGIC PROGRAMS OF AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN UKRAINE)

Метою дослідження є обґрунтування організаційних та методичних підходів щодо забезпечення взаємодії інструментів аграрної політики та заходів державних стратегічних програм з розвитку АПК. Автором було здій- снено оцінку «Державної цільової програми розвитку українського села на період до 2015 року» як важеля управлінського впливу на розвиток аграрного сектору та проаналізовано рівень її виконання. Результатом проведеного дослідження є обґрунтована автором концептуальна модель взаємодії інструментів аграрної політики та державних цільових програм розвитку АПК. Наукова новизна проведеного дослідження полягає у комплексному та системному аналізі означеної проблематики із врахуванням галузевих особливостей аграрного сектору. Запропоновані методичні підходи можуть бути використані державними органами управління при формуванні державних стратегічних програм з розвитку АПК, що обумовлює їх практичну цінність. (The purpose of investigation has been to substantiate the organizational and methodological approaches to ensuring the interaction of agricultural policy tools with measures of state strategic programs of agricultural development. The author has been analysed «The State Target Program of Ukrainian village development until 2015» as a lever of managerial influence on the development of the agricultural sector and investigated the level of the Program implementation. As a result the author has substantiated a conceptual model of interaction of agricultural policy tools with state target programs of agricultural development. Scientific novelty of the research has consisted in the integrated and systematic analysis of the mentioned issues, taking into account the sectoral features of agriculture. Proposed methodological approaches could be applied by public authorities during formation of the state strategic programs of agricultural development, which has presented a practical value of investigation.

Визначено складові елементи механізму формування стратегічного бачення, обґрунтовано систему показників, які відображають результативність позиціювання та зумовлюють місце та роль певного товару на ринку і водночас у господарському портфелі підприємства. Результатом проведеного дослідження є обґрунтований автором висновок, що економічні умови функціонування аграрних підприємств суттєво впливають на механізм формування їх стратегічних пріоритетів. Наукова новизна проведеного дослідження полягає в комплексному та системному аналізі означеної проблематики із врахуванням галузевих особливостей аграрного сектора. Запропоновані методичні підходи можуть бути використані аграрними підприємствами при формуванні ринкових стратегій позиціювання власної продукції, що зумовлює їх практичну цінність. (The purpose of investigation has been to substantiate the organizational and methodological approaches to the formation of a strategic vision and aims of agricultural enterprise product positioning. The author has defined elements of the mechanism of the strategic vision formation, grounded the system of indicators that represents the efficiency ofpositioning, determines the place and role of a certain good on the market and at the same time in the commercial portfolio of enterprise. As a result the author has concluded that economic conditions of the agricultural enterprise performance significantly affect the mechanism of their strategic priority formation. Scientific novelty of the research has consisted in the integrated and systematic analysis of the mentioned issues, taking into account the sectoral features of agriculture. Proposed methodological approaches could be applied by agricultural enterprises during formation of their market positioning strategies, which presents a practical value of investigation.
