    Electron microscopic, immunofluorescent and virological studies on a rhabdomyosarcoma in epidermodysplasia verruciformis

    A subcutaneous tumor of a patient with epidermodysplasia verruciformis was studied by the light microscopy, the electronmicroscopy and the immunofluorescent test. The tumor cells were histologically pleomorphic and electronmicroscopically contained varying amounts of cytoplasmic filaments without Z-band formation. The antimyosin serum stained the tumor cells, showing their myogenic origin. No virus or virus-like particles were observed in the tumor. Tumor antigens stainable by the patient's serum were not detected. Hamsters inoculated with the tumor extract at birth developed no noticeable diseases.</p

    Prognosis of carcinoma is variable and can not be predected from the initial clinical finding. In some cases it recovers permanently while in others it has recurrence, although the clinical findings themselves are quite the same at the beginning of the treatment. In some cases it prognosis rapidly to death in a very short period of time while in others it takes rather a mild course. Thus it is likely that there is a difference in degree of malignancy of carcinoma of the cervix. Regarding the histological grading of malignancy of cervical carcinoma much has been written up to the present, but it is not clear whether or not this grading will correspond with clinical prognosis. Under such circumstances it is note worthy that professor IMAI of the Department of Patholology, University of Kyushu, suggested a new classification of carcinoma in 1949. The present paper deals with the results of the studies on malignancy of carcinoma of the cevix carried out on the basis of that classifcation

    Vascular-Inducing Poly(glycolic acid)-Collagen Nanocomposite-Fiber Scaffold

    For regenerative medicine with scaffolds, the immediate cellularization of the scaffold accompanied by angiogenesis inside is an important event. Such the aim is generally pursued by combining basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with the scaffold. In this study, we produced the nanocomposite nanofiber composed of poly(glycolic acid), PGA, and collagen to accomplish the recruitment of host cells and peripheral blood vessels without the bio-derived matter like growth factors. Structural analysis revealed that the fiber has the sheath-core like structure in which the surface region is abundant in PGA and the core region is abundant in collagen. This peculiar fibrous structure probably contributes the fragility of the fiber under the swelling in body fluid. The results of the animal experiment demonstrated that the PGA-collagen nanofiber sponge was entirely populated and vascularized within 5 days after the implantation. We hypothesized that the early fragmentation of the implanted fibrous sponge accelerated the host&apos;s inflammation reaction by phagocytized by macrophage, which followed by the recruitment of the fibroblasts and endothelial cells from the host tissue. Designing the suitable nanoscale structure of materials makes cellularization and vascularization of the scaffold possible without bio-derived factors.
