    Persistent strabismus after cataract extraction

    Background. Transient ocular misalignment as a complication of parabulbar and peribulbar anesthesia has already been reported in the literature. The aim of our study was to present a case of irreversible iatrogenic vertical strabismus after cataract surgery, which had to be operated on. Methods. Clinical and orthoptic evaluation of a female patient with vertical diplopia after phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Results. One week after the uneventful surgery, a 68-year-old patient complained of a sudden vertical deviation in the operated eye. The patient had not had a history of previous motility disorders. On examination, the patient showed hypertropia in the left eye of 15−20 degrees in primary position. Three and 6 months postoperatively, there was no a spontaneous improvement, while the persistent vertical deviation was 40 prism dioptres. Strabismus surgery was required 1 year after the cataract surgery. Conclusion. Diplopia is a complication of peribulbar anesthesia which could be persistent. The superior and inferior rectus muscle are especially vulnerable. Its occurrence may be technique - related and the incidence increases when hyaluronidase is not available

    Primena modifikovanih tanina u antikorozionim alkidnim premazima

    The study of the synthesis of anticorrosive inhibitors, based on chemically modified tannins, and their use in alkyd based coatings to improve anticorrosive properties is presented in this work. Two methods of tannin modification were applied: direct method using ammonium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide/ammonium chloride buffer or diethylenetriamine (DETA); and a two-step method including tannin modification with epichlorohydrin (ECH) in first step to produce epoxy modified tannin, ET, and further modification with heteroaromatic amines or linseed oil fatty acids (LFA) in second step. The obtained anticorrosive additives were characterized using ATR-FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. Epoxy, amino, hydroxyl, acid and iodine values of the synthesized inhibitors were determined according to standard methods. The prepared alkyd coating with tannin inhibitors was tested according to standard SRPS EN ISO 4628 method. Anticorrosive coating containing modified tannin based additive showed increased anticorrosive properties, good adhesion and coverage comparing to the coating with zinc phosphate additive. The alkyd coating films based on ET-LFA and ET modified with 2-amino-5- mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole showed best anticorrosive results.U ovom radu prikazana je sinteza antikorozionih aditiva na bazi hemijski modifikovanog tanina i njihova primena u alkidnim premazima u cilju poboljšanja antikorozionih svojstava. Prikazane su dve metode modifikacije tanina: direktna modifikacija tanina primenom amonijum-hidroksida, amonijum-hidroksid/amonijum-hlorid pufera ili dietilentriamina (DETA); i dvostepena modifikacija tanina koja u prvom stupnju uključuje modifikaciju epihlorhidrinom sa ciljem da se dobije tannin sa epoksi terminiranim funkcionalnim grupama, ET, i modifikaciju ET tanina sa heteroaromatičnim aminima ili masnim kiselinama izolovanim iz lanenog ulja (LFA) u drugom stupnju. Sintetisani antikorozioni aditivi su okarakterisani primenom ATR-FTIR, 1H i 13C NMR spektroskopija, i elementalnom analizom. Sadržaj epoksi, amino, hidroksilnih i karboksilnih grupa i vrednost jodnog broja sintetisanih aditiva određen je prema standardnim metodama. Alkidni premazi koji sadrže antikorozione aditive na bazi modifikovanog tanina ispitani su prema standardnoj SRPS EN ISO 4628 metodi. Antikorozivni alkidni premazi na bazi modfikovanih tanina pokazali su poboljšane antikorozione karakteristike i adheziju u poređenju sa alkidnim premazom na bazi cink-fosfata. Alkidni premazi koji sadrže dvostepeno modifikovani tanin sa LFA i 2-amino-5-merkapto-1,3,4-tiadiazolom pokazali su najbolje antikorozione karakteristike

    Acute myocardial infarction and diabetes mellitus

    Akutni infarkt miokarda (AIM) je klinički oblik koronarne bolesti srca, koji nastaje pri okluziji koronarne arterije, a ireverzibilna ishemija progredira do nekroze miokarda. Morbiditet i mortalitet od kardiovaskularnih komorbiditeta, uključujući AIM, je kod obolelih od insulin-nezavisnog dijabetesa veći nego kod nedijabetičara iste životne dobi. Jedan od razloga za veći mortalitet od infarkta miokarda kod dijabetičara može biti i srčana insuficijencija. Bolesnici sa diajbetesom i AIM imaju povećan rizik od lošeg ishoda terapije AIM u odnosu na nedijabetičare, a osnovni razlozi su endotelna disfunkcija, protrombotično stanje, veća mogućnost restenoze, negativnog vaskularnog remodelovanja, povećane glikolizacije proteinai depozicije vaskularnog matriksa. U okviru ovog preglednog članka, dat je prikaz najnovijih literaturnih podataka i praktičnih saznanja o AIM kod dijabetičnih bolesnika.Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a clinical form of coronary heart disease, which occurs after coronary arteries' occlusion and irreversible ischemia progression leads to myocardial necrosis. Morbidity and mortality caused by cardiovascular comorbidities, including AIM, are greater in patients with insulin - dependent diabetes than in non - diabetes patients of the same age. One of the reasons for a higher mortality rate from AMI in patients with diabetes may be heart failure. In addition, patients with diabetes and AMI have an increased risk for poor therapy outcomes of AMI compared with non - diabetes patients, and the main reasons are endothelial dysfunction, prothrombotic state, a greater possibility of restenosis, negative vascular remodelling, increased protein glycosylation, and vascular matrix deposition. In this review, we provide an overview of recent literature data and practical knowledge related to the AMI in diabetic patients

    Measles situation in Serbia in an era of measles elimination (2007-2009)

    Following the introduction of measles immunization in Serbia in 1971, measles outbreaks were recorded every 3 to 5 years until 1997. The outbreak in 1997 with 4000 cases was the last large outbreak in Serbia. In 2007, an outbreak with 191 laboratory confirmed or epidemiologically linked cases was reported in Vojvodina. In 2008 and 2009, only 3 cases were confirmed. From 2007-2009, measles infections were most frequently detected in the Roma population but also in non-immunized or partially immunized persons from the general population

    A Machine-Learning-Based Approach to Prediction of Biogeographic Ancestry within Europe

    Data obtained with the use of massive parallel sequencing (MPS) can be valuable in population genetics studies. In particular, such data harbor the potential for distinguishing samples from different populations, especially from those coming from adjacent populations of common origin. Machine learning (ML) techniques seem to be especially well suited for analyzing large datasets obtained using MPS. The Slavic populations constitute about a third of the population of Europe and inhabit a large area of the continent, while being relatively closely related in population genetics terms. In this proof-of-concept study, various ML techniques were used to classify DNA samples from Slavic and non-Slavic individuals. The primary objective of this study was to empirically evaluate the feasibility of discerning the genetic provenance of individuals of Slavic descent who exhibit genetic similarity, with the overarching goal of categorizing DNA specimens derived from diverse Slavic population representatives. Raw sequencing data were pre-processed, to obtain a 1200 character-long binary vector. A total of three classifiers were used—Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and XGBoost. The most-promising results were obtained using SVM with a linear kernel, with 99.9% accuracy and F1-scores of 0.9846–1.000 for all classes

    Vulnerability to natural disasters in Serbia: spatial and temporal comparison

    The frequency of natural disasters and the extent of their consequences at a global level are constantly increasing. This trend is partially caused by increased population vulnerability, which implies the degree of population vulnerability due to high magnitude natural processes. This paper presents an analysis of vulnerability to natural disaster in Serbia in the second half of the twentieth and the early twenty-first century. Vulnerability changes were traced on the basis of demographic–economic indicators derived from statistical data for local government units (municipalities) provided by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. Calculations were performed in the geographical information system environment. The results of the study show that spatial and temporal vulnerability variations are causally correlated with changes in the selected components. Significant rise of vulnerability is related to urban areas, while lower values are characteristic for other areas of Serbia; this is primarily a consequence of different population density

    Mitochondrial DNA Perspective of Serbian Genetic Diversity

    Although south-Slavic populations have been studied to date from various aspects, the population of Serbia, occupying the central part of the Balkan Peninsula, is still genetically understudied at least at the level of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation. We analyzed polymorphisms of the first and the second mtDNA hypervariable segments (HVS-I and HVS-II) and informative coding-region markers in 139 Serbians to shed more light on their mtDNA variability, and used available data on other Slavic and neighboring non-Slavic populations to assess their interrelations in a broader European context. The contemporary Serbian mtDNA profile is consistent with the general European maternal landscape having a substantial proportion of shared haplotypes with eastern, central, and southern European populations. Serbian population was characterized as an important link between easternmost and westernmost south-Slavic populations due to the observed lack of genetic differentiation with all other south-Slavic populations and its geographical positioning within the Balkan Peninsula. An increased heterogeneity of south Slavs, most likely mirroring turbulent demographic events within the Balkan Peninsula over time (i.e., frequent admixture and differential introgression of various gene pools), and a marked geographical stratification of Slavs to south-, east-, and west-Slavic groups, were also found. A phylogeographic analyses of 20 completely sequenced Serbian mitochondrial genomes revealed not only the presence of mtDNA lineages predominantly found within the Slavic gene pool (U4a2a*, U4a2a1, U4a2c, U4a2g, HV10), supporting a common Slavic origin, but also lineages that may have originated within the southern Europe (H5*, H5e1, H5a1v) and the Balkan Peninsula in particular (H6a2b and L2a1k).     Prognostic significance of sox2, sox3, sox11, sox14 and sox18 gene expression in de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients

    Aberrant expression of different SOX (SRY-related high mobility group (HMG) box) genes has been observed in number of tumors but, little is known about their expression patterns in hematological malignancies, especially in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In this study we investigated SOX2, SOX3, SOX11, SOX14 and SOX18 gene expression in 50 de novo adult AML patients and correlated our findings with known clinical and molecular prognostic markers of the disease. We have found that these genes are overexpressed in 10-22% of patients and preliminary findings suggest that high expression level of these genes may have prognostic significance in AML patients. This is the first study focused on examining the expression level of SOX2, SOX3, SOX11, SOX14 and SOX18 genes in AML patients. Although this is a relatively limited study, initial findings indicate the need for further investigation of these genes, their potential roles in leukemia pathogenesis as well as prognosis in AML patients

    Complete mitogenome data for the Serbian population: the contribution to high-quality forensic databases

    Mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) is a valuable resource in resolving various human forensic casework. The usage of variability of complete mtDNA genomes increases their discriminatory power to the maximum and enables ultimate resolution of distinct maternal lineages. However, their wider employment in forensic casework is nowadays limited by the lack of appropriate reference database. In order to fill in the gap in the reference data, which, considering Slavic-speaking populations, currently comprises only mitogenomes of East and West Slavs, we present mitogenome data for 226 Serbians, representatives of South Slavs from the Balkan Peninsula. We found 143 (sub)haplogroups among which West Eurasian ones were dominant. The percentage of unique haplotypes was 85%, and the random match probability was as low as 0.53%. We support previous findings on both high levels of genetic diversity in the Serbian population and patterns of genetic differentiation among this and ten studied European populations. However, our high-resolution data supported more pronounced genetic differentiation among Serbians and two Slavic populations (Russians and Poles) as well as expansion of the Serbian population after the Last Glacial Maximum and during the Migration period (fourth to ninth century A.D.), as inferred from the Bayesian skyline analysis. Phylogenetic analysis of haplotypes found in Serbians contributed towards the improvement of the worldwide mtDNA phylogeny, which is essential for the interpretation of the mtDNA casework
