Stress Reduction Through Listening to Indian Classical Music During Gastroscopy

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music on elevated state of anxiety as many patients become stressed and anxious during diagnostic procedures. The study was conducted on 104 consecutive patients undergoing GI endoscopy for various reasons. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups regardless of sex, age and underlying disease. One group of 54 patients were made to listen to a recorded Indian classical instrumental music before and during the procedure, while the other group of 50 patients did not. Blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate were recorded at the beginning of consultation and end of procedure. Perception of procedure using a three point attitude scale was assessed. Our results indicate that the background Indian classical music is efficacious in reducing psychological distress during a gastroscopic examination. We suggest that music could be applied to other medical situations as well, which tend to generate undue psychological stress and anxiety. Music, as a familiar personal and culture medium, can be used to ease anxiety, to act as distractor, to increase discomfort and pain threshold

Black Hole Relics in Large Extra Dimensions

    Get PDF
Recent calculations applying statistical mechanics indicate that under the assumption of compactified large extra dimensions a black hole might evolve into a (quasi-)stable state with mass close to the new fundamental scale MfM_f. Black holes and therefore their relics might be produced at the {\sc LHC} in the case of extra-dimensional topologies. In this energy regime, Hawking's evaporation scenario is modified due to energy conservation and quantum effects. We reanalyse the evaporation of small black holes including the quantisation of the emitted radiation due to the finite surface of the black hole. It is found that observable stable black hole relics with masses ∼1−3Mf\sim 1-3 M_f are formed which can be identified by a delayed single jet with a corresponding hard momentum kick to the relic and by ionisation, e.g. in a TPC

Search for TeV γ\gamma -rays from H1426+428 during 2004-07 with the TACTIC telescope

The BL Lac object H1426+428 (z≡0.129z\equiv 0.129) is an established source of TeV γ\gamma-rays and detections of these photons from this object also have important implications for estimating the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) in addition to the understanding of the particle acceleration and γ\gamma-ray production mechanisms in the AGN jets. We have observed this source for about 244h in 2004, 2006 and 2007 with the TACTIC γ\gamma-ray telescope located at Mt. Abu, India. Detailed analysis of these data do not indicate the presence of any statistically significant TeV γ\gamma-ray signal from the source direction. Accordingly, we have placed an upper limit of ≤1.18×10−12\leq1.18\times10^{-12} photonsphotons cm−2cm^{-2} s−1s^{-1} on the integrated γ\gamma-ray flux at 3σ\sigma significance level.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures accepted for publication in Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physic

Accident Detection and Notification System Using Android

    Get PDF
Now a day it is seen that there are number of vehicle and accident causing due to it is increasing day by day. Many people get injured and some of them even die due to unavailability of emergency facilities. The emergency responders take much long time to reach the spot which some time fail to save the lives. So to reduce this scenario there is need to decrease the time between the accidents occurred and the emergency facility provided to them. With the help of android phone which will detect the accident through collision detection circuit and notification will be sent to the known people using GSM which can be already noted and alert to hospital system and police station with alert message along with the link of map using GPS which will address the exact place of accident. Concordance of Cross-Sectional Imaging and Adrenal Venous Sampling Results for Patients with Surgically Treated Primary Hyperaldosteronism

Background Adrenal venous sampling (AVS) is used to distinguish unilateral from bilateral aldosterone hypersecretion as a cause of primary hyperaldosteronism (PHA). This distinction is critical because unilateral disease is treated, and often cured, by adrenalectomy, whereas bilateral hypersecretion should be managed medically. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort review of adult patients undergoing index adrenalectomy for PHA at the University of Nebraska Medical Center from July of 2013 to June of 2022. Clinical and pathologic variables were assessed including patient age at surgery, sex, race or ethnicity, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, number and type of antihypertensive medications pre- and post-operatively, potassium level and supplementation, PAC, PRA, ARR, imaging findings, adrenal venous sampling results and concordance of imaging findings with AVS and surgical outcomes. Statistical analysis was performed with Mann Whitney U and chi-squared Fisher’s exact using STATA version 17. Results In our cohort, 21 patients were identified who underwent adrenalectomy for primary hyperaldosteronism. Of these, 2 patients did not have any imaging findings and 19 were image localized. For patients with image localization AVS was concordant in 9, discordant in 4, and nondiagnostic in 6. For both patients without image localization the AVS was lateralizing. The overall discordance between imaging results and AVS was 40%. The only significant difference between patients with concordant and discordant results was the aldosterone level with concordant patients having a mean of 58ng/dL compared with discordant patients 23ng/dL (p = 0.0022). There was a significant reduction in antihypertensive medications in the entire cohort from a mean of 3.2 medications to 1.2 medications (p \u3c 0.001). Conclusions and Future Directions In this cohort, 40% of patients with selective AVS had discordant imaging and AVS results. Preoperative plasma aldosterone concentration was positively associated with concordance, with higher PAC more likely to have imaging and AVS concordance. Overall, hypertension was significantly improved following adrenalectomy for PHA with a median decrease of 2 antihypertensives. Our results support the recommendation to perform AVS on all candidates for adrenalectomy for PHA. Further study is warranted to identify factors associated with discordance.https://digitalcommons.unmc.edu/surp2022/1008/thumbnail.jp

Very High Energy gamma-ray observations of Mrk 501 using TACTIC imaging gamma-ray telescope during 2005-06

In this paper we report on the Markarian 501 results obtained during our TeV γ\gamma-ray observations from March 11 to May 12, 2005 and February 28 to May 7, 2006 for 112.5 hours with the TACTIC γ\gamma-ray telescope. During 2005 observations for 45.7 hours, the source was found to be in a low state and we have placed an upper limit of 4.62 ×\times 10−12^{-12} photons cm−2^{-2} s−1^{-1} at 3σ\sigma level on the integrated TeV γ\gamma-ray flux above 1 TeV from the source direction. However, during the 2006 observations for 66.8h, detailed data analysis revealed the presence of a TeV γ\gamma-ray signal from the source with a statistical significance of 7.5σ\sigma above Eγ≥E_{\gamma}\geq 1 TeV. The time averaged differential energy spectrum of the source in the energy range 1-11 TeV is found to match well with the power law function of the form (dΦ/dE=f0E−Γd\Phi/dE=f_0 E^{-\Gamma}) with f0=(1.66±0.52)×10−11cm−2s−1TeV−1f_0=(1.66\pm0.52)\times 10^{-11}cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} and Γ=2.80±0.27\Gamma=2.80\pm0.27.Comment: 16 pages and 8 Figures Accepted for publication in the Journal of Physics
