Upgrade plans for the D0 calorimeter
The D{null} detector, a large collider detector located at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, has begun implementing a major detector upgrade in anticipation of the completion of the Main Injector project at the Fermilab Tevatron. The calorimeter readout has been redesigned in order to accommodate the factor of {approx} 10 increase in instantaneous luminosity and the decrease in the inter- bunch separation. Our means of dealing with the increased event rate, along with our plan for controlling overall noise levels in the calorimeter, are discussed. We also present a brief overview of the design for the detector upgrade, including a discussion of some on the more cogent physics topics that will be accessible with the factor of {approx} 20 increase over the present data sample
Response of the D0 calorimeter to cosmic ray muons
The D0 Detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is a large multi-purpose detector facility designed for the study of proton-antiproton collision products at the center-of-mass energy of 2 TeV. It consists of an inner tracking volume, hermetic uranium/liquid argon sampling calorimetry, and an outer 4{pi} muon detector. In preparation for our first collider run, the collaboration organized a Cosmic Ray Commissioning Run, which took place from February - May of 1991. This thesis is a detailed study of the response of the central calorimeter to cosmic ray muons as extracted from data collected during this run

Physics with the D0 calorimeter
The D{null} detector, located at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, USA, is a large hermetic detector designed to study the products of {ital p}{ital {anti p}} collisions at a center of mass energy of {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. The centerpiece of the detector is uranium/liquid argon sampling calorimetry, which provides high resolution detection of the physics signatures of interest - electrons, photons, jets and missing transverse energy - over a full solid angle. We discuss below how the calorimeter information is used to detect the final states relevant to the physics we are pursuing, and describe a number of physics processes and results that demonstrate the utility of some of our design choices
Cosmic ray tests of the D0 preshower detector
The D0 preshower detector consists of scintillator strips with embedded
wavelength-shifting fibers, and a readout using Visible Light Photon Counters.
The response to minimum ionizing particles has been tested with cosmic ray
muons. We report results on the gain calibration and light-yield distributions.
The spatial resolution is investigated taking into account the light sharing
between strips, the effects of multiple scattering and various systematic
uncertainties. The detection efficiency and noise contamination are also
investigated.Comment: 27 pages, 24 figures, submitted to NIM
Measurement of the Boson Mass
A measurement of the mass of the boson is presented based on a sample of
5982 decays observed in collisions at
= 1.8~TeV with the D\O\ detector during the 1992--1993 run. From a
fit to the transverse mass spectrum, combined with measurements of the
boson mass, the boson mass is measured to be .Comment: 12 pages, LaTex, style Revtex, including 3 postscript figures

Search for Top Squark Pair Production in the Dielectron Channel
This report describes the first search for top squark pair production in the
channel stop_1 stopbar_1 -> b bbar chargino_1 chargino_1 -> ee+jets+MEt using
74.9 +- 8.9 pb^-1 of data collected using the D0 detector. A 95% confidence
level upper limit on sigma*B is presented. The limit is above the theoretical
expectation for sigma*B for this process, but does show the sensitivity of the
current D0 data set to a particular topology for new physics.Comment: Five pages, including three figures, submitted to PRD Brief Report
Search for Production via Trilepton Final States in collisions at TeV
We have searched for associated production of the lightest chargino,
, and next-to-lightest neutralino, , of the
Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in collisions at
\mbox{ = 1.8 TeV} using the \D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
collider. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.5 \ipb
were examined for events containing three isolated leptons. No evidence for
pair production was found. Limits on
BrBr are
presented.Comment: 17 pages (13 + 1 page table + 3 pages figures). 3 PostScript figures

Search for a Fourth Generation Charge -1/3 Quark via Flavor Changing Neutral Current Decay
We report on a search for pair production of a fourth generation charge -1/3
quark (b') in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron
using an integrated luminosity of 93 pb^-1. Both quarks are assumed to decay
via flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC). The search uses the signatures
gamma + 3 jets + mu-tag and 2 gamma + 2 jets. We see no significant excess of
events over the expected background. We place an upper limit on the production
cross section times branching fraction that is well below theoretical
expectations for a b' quark decaying exclusively via FCNC for b' quark masses
up to m(Z) + m(b).Comment: Eleven pages, two postscript figures, submitted to Physical Review

The Azimuthal Decorrelation of Jets Widely Separated in Rapidity
This study reports the first measurement of the azimuthal decorrelation
between jets with pseudorapidity separation up to five units. The data were
accumulated using the D{\O}detector during the 1992--1993 collider run of the
Fermilab Tevatron at 1.8 TeV. These results are compared to
next--to--leading order (NLO) QCD predictions and to two leading--log
approximations (LLA) where the leading--log terms are resummed to all orders in
. The final state jets as predicted by NLO QCD
show less azimuthal decorrelation than the data. The parton showering LLA Monte
Carlo {\small HERWIG} describes the data well; an analytical LLA prediction
based on BFKL resummation shows more decorrelation than the data.Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures, all uuencoded and gzippe
Search for Squarks and Gluinos in Events Containing Jets and a Large Imbalance in Transverse Energy
Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79 pb-1, D0 has
searched for events containing multiple jets and large missing transverse
energy in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron
collider. Observing no significant excess beyond what is expected from the
standard model, we set limits on the masses of squarks and gluinos and on the
model parameters m_0 and m_1/2, in the framework of the minimal low-energy
supergravity models of supersymmetry. For tan(beta) = 2 and A_0 = 0, with mu <
0, we exclude all models with m_squark < 250 GeV/c^2. For models with equal
squark and gluino masses, we exclude m < 260 GeV/c^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, Submitted to PRL, Fixed typo on page bottom of
