    Role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in paediatric practice: an EFSUMB position statement

    The use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in adults is well established in many different areas, with a number of current applications deemed off-label, but the use supported by clinical experience and evidence. Paediatric CEUS is also an off-label application until recently with approval specifically for assessment of focal liver lesions. Nevertheless there is mounting evidence of the usefulness of CEUS in children in many areas, primarily as an imaging technique that reduces exposure to radiation, iodinated contrast medium and the patient-friendly circumstances of ultrasonography. This position statement of the European Federation of Societies in Ultrasound and Medicine (EFSUMB) assesses the current status of CEUS applications in children and makes suggestions for further development of this technique

    Hybrid Equation/Agent-Based Model of Ischemia-Induced Hyperemia and Pressure Ulcer Formation Predicts Greater Propensity to Ulcerate in Subjects with Spinal Cord Injury

    Pressure ulcers are costly and life-threatening complications for people with spinal cord injury (SCI). People with SCI also exhibit differential blood flow properties in non-ulcerated skin. We hypothesized that a computer simulation of the pressure ulcer formation process, informed by data regarding skin blood flow and reactive hyperemia in response to pressure, could provide insights into the pathogenesis and effective treatment of post-SCI pressure ulcers. Agent-Based Models (ABM) are useful in settings such as pressure ulcers, in which spatial realism is important. Ordinary Differential Equation-based (ODE) models are useful when modeling physiological phenomena such as reactive hyperemia. Accordingly, we constructed a hybrid model that combines ODEs related to blood flow along with an ABM of skin injury, inflammation, and ulcer formation. The relationship between pressure and the course of ulcer formation, as well as several other important characteristic patterns of pressure ulcer formation, was demonstrated in this model. The ODE portion of this model was calibrated to data related to blood flow following experimental pressure responses in non-injured human subjects or to data from people with SCI. This model predicted a higher propensity to form ulcers in response to pressure in people with SCI vs. non-injured control subjects, and thus may serve as novel diagnostic platform for post-SCI ulcer formation. © 2013 Solovyev et al

    Microstructural analysis of deformation-induced hypoxic damage in skeletal muscle

    Deep pressure ulcers are caused by sustained mechanical loading and involve skeletal muscle tissue injury. The exact underlying mechanisms are unclear, and the prevalence is high. Our hypothesis is that the aetiology is dominated by cellular deformation (Bouten et al. in Ann Biomed Eng 29:153–63, 2001; Breuls et al. in Ann Biomed Eng 31:1357–364, 2003; Stekelenburg et al. in J App Physiol 100(6):1946–954, 2006) and deformation-induced ischaemia. The experimental observation that mechanical compression induced a pattern of interspersed healthy and dead cells in skeletal muscle (Stekelenburg et al. in J App Physiol 100(6):1946–954, 2006) strongly suggests to take into account the muscle microstructure in studying damage development. The present paper describes a computational model for deformation-induced hypoxic damage in skeletal muscle tissue. Dead cells stop consuming oxygen and are assumed to decrease in stiffness due to loss of structure. The questions addressed are if these two consequences of cell death influence the development of cell injury in the remaining cells. The results show that weakening of dead cells indeed affects the damage accumulation in other cells. Further, the fact that cells stop consuming oxygen after they have died, delays cell death of other cells

    T-2 toksin - pojavnost i toksičnost u peradi

    T-2 toxin is the most toxic type A trichothecene mycotoxin. It is the secondary metabolite of the Fusarium fungi, and is common in grain and animal feed. Toxic effects have been shown both in experimental animals and in livestock. It has been implicated in several outbreaks of human mycotoxicoses. Toxic effects in poultry include inhibition of protein, DNA, and RNA synthesis, cytotoxicity, immunomodulation, cell lesions in the digestive tract, organs and skin, neural disturbances and low performance in poultry production (decreased weight gain, egg production, and hatchability). Concentrations of T-2 toxin in feed are usually low, and its immunosuppressive effects and secondary infections often make diagnosis difficult. If at the onset of the disease, a change in diet leads to health and performance improvements in animals, this may point to mycotoxin poisoning. Regular control of grain and feed samples is a valuable preventive measure, and it is accurate only if representative samples are tested. This article reviews the incidence and toxic effects of T-2 toxin in poultry.T-2 toksin je najtoksičniji predstavnik trikotecenskih mikotoksina tipa A. On je sekundarni produkt metabolizma plijesni roda Fusarium i često je prisutan u žitaricama i hrani za životinje. Štetni učinci uočeni su u eksperimentalnih životinja i životinja u uzgoju. On se povezuje s pojavom bolesti ljudi od mikotoksikoza. Učinci toksina u peradi su višestruki: inhibicija sinteze proteina, DNA i RNA, citotoksični učinak, imunomodulatorni učinak, oštećenje stanica probavnog sustava, organa i kože, živčani poremećaji te pad proizvodnih karakteristika u uzgoju peradi (slabiji prirast, pad nesivosti i valivosti). Koncentracije T-2 toksina u hrani redovito su vrlo malene, a zbog imunosupresivnog djelovanja toksina te istodobne sekundarne infekcije bolest se često teško dijagnosticira. Pri pojavi bolesti promjenom hrane može doći do poboljšanja zdravstvenog stanja, što tako|er upućuje na moguće trovanje mikotoksinima. Redovita kontrola uzoraka žitarica i hrane za životinje jedna je od preventivnih mjera, a detekcija mikotoksina u žitaricama i hrani pouzdana je samo ako se ispituje reprezentativan uzorak.     THE PASSOVER OF JESUS CHRIST

    Many people raise the question: Was the Last Supper of Jesus and the Apostles the Jewish Passover? The answer to this question is not that simple, though. This article attempts to identify the features of Jewish Passover based on characterictics of the Last Supper found in the Synoptic Gospels. However, the most important aspect for the author is to present the novelty of Eucharist in the light of rites and theology of the holy day of Pesach. This Novelty, when interpreting the descriptions of the Last Supper in the light of the Jewish Pass-over, provides us with a new theological dimension of the Eucharist, which was taken into account during the Second Vatican Council as well as liturgical re-forms. Christ died and was raised from the dead to the immortal glory so as to deliver us from the power of sin. Our Saviour crossed the borders of death and went on to the new life. In theology this passing is referred to as Pe-sach/Passover, the Mystery of Pascha, or the Paschal Mystery, since the He-brew word pesach means a passage. The ‘passage’ of Christ to the to Father’s glory was announced by the Israeli leaving the Egyptian land of slavery, sol-emnly declared at the time of Jewish celebration of Pascha/Passover. Christ’s death and His Resurrection took place right at the time of this religious feast. The introductory part of this article presents the most important elements of Jewish Pesach contained in descriptions of the Last Supper. Then we make insight into Jesus Christ and His redempting activity in the light of the Jewish Passover. And finally, the last part of this article introduces the new and pas-chal dimension of the Eucharist
