Neutron and X-ray Diffraction Residual Stress Measurements in Aluminium Alloys MIG Welded T-Joints after Friction Stir Processing
Abstract. Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is a relatively new post-processing technique. Fatigue strength of MIG fillet welds of aluminium alloys can be substantially improved using FSP. Beyond other properties intrinsically tied to fatigue life, especially attention should be paid to the effect of the final residual stress state. In this study the residual stress distribution in T-joints of two aluminium alloys was determined by Neutron and X-ray diffraction. FSP effect on the residual stress state and fatigue life was analysed
On the Role of Attention in Binocular Rivalry: Electrophysiological Evidence
During binocular rivalry visual consciousness fluctuates between two dissimilar monocular images. We investigated the role of attention in this phenomenon by comparing event-related potentials (ERPs) when binocular-rivalry stimuli were attended with when they were unattended. Stimuli were dichoptic, orthogonal gratings that yielded binocular rivalry and dioptic, identically oriented gratings that yielded binocular fusion. Events were all possible orthogonal changes in orientation of one or both gratings. We had two attention conditions: In the attend-to-grating condition, participants had to report changes in perceived orientation, focussing their attention on the gratings. In the attend-to-fixation condition participants had to report changes in a central fixation target, taking attention away from the gratings. We found, surprisingly, that attending to rival gratings yielded a smaller ERP component (the N1, from 160–210 ms) than attending to the fixation target. To explain this paradoxical effect of attention, we propose that rivalry occurs in the attend-to-fixation condition (we found an ERP signature of rivalry in the form of a sustained negativity from 210–300 ms) but that the mechanism processing the stimulus changes is more adapted in the attend-to-grating condition than in the attend-to-fixation condition. This is consistent with the theory that adaptation gives rise to changes of visual consciousness during binocular rivalry
Traveling EEG slow oscillation along the dorsal attention network initiates spontaneous perceptual switching
An ambiguous figure such as the Necker cube causes spontaneous perceptual switching (SPS). The mechanism of SPS in multistable perception has not yet been determined. Although early psychological studies suggested that SPS may be caused by fatigue or satiation of orientation, the neural mechanism of SPS is still unknown. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has shown that the dorsal attention network (DAN), which mainly controls voluntary attention, is involved in bistable perception of the Necker cube. To determine whether neural dynamics along the DAN cause SPS, we performed simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and fMRI during an SPS task with the Necker cube, with every SPS reported by pressing a button. This EEG–fMRI integrated analysis showed that (a) 3–4 Hz spectral EEG power modulation at fronto-central, parietal, and centro-parietal electrode sites sequentially appeared from 750 to 350 ms prior to the button press; and (b) activations correlating with the EEG modulation traveled along the DAN from the frontal to the parietal regions. These findings suggest that slow oscillation initiates SPS through global dynamics along the attentional system such as the DAN

Rapid and objective assessment of neural function in autism spectrum disorder using transient visual evoked potentials
OBJECTIVE:
There is a critical need to identify biomarkers and objective outcome measures that can be used to understand underlying neural mechanisms in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) offer a noninvasive technique to evaluate the functional integrity of neural mechanisms, specifically visual pathways, while probing for disease pathophysiology.
METHODS:
Transient VEPs (tVEPs) were obtained from 96 unmedicated children, including 37 children with ASD, 36 typically developing (TD) children, and 23 unaffected siblings (SIBS). A conventional contrast-reversing checkerboard condition was compared to a novel short-duration condition, which was developed to enable objective data collection from severely affected populations who are often excluded from electroencephalographic (EEG) studies.
RESULTS:
Children with ASD showed significantly smaller amplitudes compared to TD children at two of the earliest critical VEP components, P60-N75 and N75-P100. SIBS showed intermediate responses relative to ASD and TD groups. There were no group differences in response latency. Frequency band analyses indicated significantly weaker responses for the ASD group in bands encompassing gamma-wave activity. Ninety-two percent of children with ASD were able to complete the short-duration condition compared to 68% for the standard condition.
CONCLUSIONS:
The current study establishes the utility of a short-duration tVEP test for use in children at varying levels of functioning and describes neural abnormalities in children with idiopathic ASD. Implications for excitatory/inhibitory balance as well as the potential application of VEP for use in clinical trials are discussed

Cyclic Variation of Residual Stress Induced by Tool Vibration in Machining Operations
AbstractIn machining, due to the tool vibration the forces, temperatures and stresses vary during the cutting process, so as the residual stresses over the machined surface. This variation of the residual stress has never been measured and, therefore, imposes new experimental challenges. The objective of this work is to correlate the variation of the residual stresses along the cutting path with the frequency of the surface geometrical defect generated by the vibration of the tool holding system. In order to perform such correlation a hybrid experimental/analytical approach was applied for an austenitic stainless steel, AISI 316L. Residual stresses were analyzed in the machined specimen along the cutting path using neutron diffraction. The results show a cyclic variation of the residual stresses, which can be detected when considering the frequency of the tool vibration. The frequency of the tool vibration is also correlated with the topology of the surface
