A systematic study of transport, magnetic and thermal properties of layered iridates

A unique feature of the 5d-iridates is that the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and Coulomb interactions U are of comparable strength and therefore compete vigorously. The relative strength of these interactions stabilizes new exotic ground states that provide a fertile ground for studying new physics. SOI is proportional to Z^4 (Z is the atomic number), and it is now recognized that strong SOI can drive novel narrow-gap insulating states in heavy transition metal oxides such as iridates. Indeed, strong SOI necessarily introduces strong lattice degrees of freedom that become critical to new physics in the iridates. This dissertation thoroughly examines a wide array of newly observed novel phenomena induced by adjusting the relative strengths of U and SOI interactions via slight chemical doping and application of hydrostatic pressure in the layered iridates, particularly, BaIrO3 and Sr2IrO4

Direct evidence of a zigzag spin chain structure in the honeycomb lattice: A neutron and x-ray diffraction investigation on single crystal Na2IrO3\rm Na_2IrO_3

We have combined single crystal neutron and x-ray diffractions to investigate the magnetic and crystal structures of the honeycomb lattice Na2IrO3\rm Na_2IrO_3. The system orders magnetically below 18.1(2)18.1(2) K with Ir4+^{4+} ions forming zigzag spin chains within the layered honeycomb network with ordered moment of 0.22(1)μB\rm 0.22(1) \mu_B/Ir site. Such a configuration sharply contrasts the N{\'{e}}el or stripe states proposed in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The structure refinement reveals that the Ir atoms form nearly ideal 2D honeycomb lattice while the IrO6\rm IrO_6 octahedra experience a trigonal distortion that is critical to the ground state. The results of this study provide much-needed experimental insights into the magnetic and crystal structure crucial to the understanding of the exotic magnetic order and possible topological characteristics in the 5dd-electron based honeycomb lattice.Comment: Revised version as that to appear in PR

The aim of this study is to determine the patients' preferences in relation to implemented healthcare e-services. To measure and evaluate the interests of patients in healthcare e-services the indicator was determined. This indicator was calculated for various age groups basing on the results of survey research (PAPI). E-services were found as an important ingredient of healthcare system by vast majority of respondents except the elderly people who expressed low interest in e-services. Nevertheless, e-services cannot replace the traditional channels of communication which is supposed to remain crucial and still desired. Moreover, the recommendations for healthcare providers were presented.Celem pracy jest określenie preferencji pacjentów w odniesieniu do wdrażanych e-usług. W pracy została określona miara służąca do pomiaru i oceny zainteresowania e-usługami w ochronie zdrowia.
