    Consumer Buying Behavior of Mobile Phone Devices

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the decision of buying mobile phone devices in Hawassa town. In order to accomplish the objectives of the study, a sample of 246 consumers were taken by using simple random sampling technique. Both primary and secondary data were explored. Moreover, six important factors i.e. price, social group, product features, brand name, durability and after sales services were selected and analyzed through the use of correlation and multiple regressions analysis. From the analysis, it was clear that consumer’s value price followed by mobile phone features as the most important variable amongst all and it also acted as a motivational force that influences them to go for a mobile phone purchase decision. The study suggested that the mobile phone sellers should consider the above mentioned factors to equate the opportunity. Keywords: Consumer Buying Behavior, Mobile Phone, Consumer Purchase Decisio

    In this paper, we present a new haptic interface, called active skin , which is configured with a tactile sensor and a tactile stimulator in single haptic cell, and multiple haptic cells are embedded in a dielectric elastomer. The active skin generates a wide variety of haptic feel in response to the touch by synchronizing the sensor and the stimulator. In this paper, the design of the haptic cell is derived via iterative analysis and design procedures. A fabrication method dedicated to the proposed device is investigated and a controller to drive multiple haptic cells is developed. In addition, several experiments are performed to evaluate the performance of the active skin

    High-dose clevudine impairs mitochondrial function and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in INS-1E cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Clevudine is a nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor that exhibits potent antiviral activity against hepatitis B virus (HBV) without serious side effects. However, mitochondrial myopathy has been observed in patients with chronic HBV infection taking clevudine. Moreover, the development of diabetes was recently reported in patients receiving long-term treatment with clevudine. In this study, we investigated the effects of clevudine on mitochondrial function and insulin release in a rat clonal β-cell line, INS-1E.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number and the mRNA levels were measured by using quantitative PCR. MTT analysis, ATP/lactate measurements, and insulin assay were performed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both INS-1E cells and HepG2 cells, which originated from human hepatoma, showed dose-dependent decreases in mtDNA copy number and cytochrome c oxidase-1 (Cox-1) mRNA level following culture with clevudine (10 μM-1 mM) for 4 weeks. INS-1E cells treated with clevudine had reduced total mitochondrial activities, lower cytosolic ATP contents, enhanced lactate production, and more lipid accumulation. Insulin release in response to glucose application was markedly decreased in clevudine-treated INS-1E cells, which might be a consequence of mitochondrial dysfunction.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data suggest that high-dose treatment with clevudine induces mitochondrial defects associated with mtDNA depletion and impairs glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in insulin-releasing cells. These findings partly explain the development of diabetes in patients receiving clevudine who might have a high susceptibility to mitochondrial toxicity.</p

    Antifungal Effect of Chitosan as Ca²⁺ Channel Blocker

    The aim of this study was to investigate antifungal activity of a range of different molecular weight (MW) chitosan against Penicillium italicum. Our results demonstrate that the antifungal activity was dependent both the MW and concentration of the chitosan. Among a series of chitosan derived from the hydrolysis of high MW chitosan, the fractions containing various sizes of chitosan ranging from 3 to 15 glucosamine units named as chitooligomers-F2 (CO-F2) was found to show the highest antifungal activity against P. italicum. Furthermore, the effect of CO-F2 toward this fungus was significantly reduced in the presence of Ca²⁺, whereas its effect was recovered by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, suggesting that the CO-F2 acts via disruption of Ca²⁺ gradient required for survival of the fungus. Our results suggest that CO-F2 may serve as potential compounds to develop alternatives to synthetic fungicides for the control of the postharvest diseases

    A Real Time Cost Effective Geometry Calibration Method for Isocenter Tracking of a Rotating Gantry Using Optical Vision Sensors

    ABSTRACT In this paper, a real time and cost effective deformation sensor system is proposed to verify isocenter sphere of a dual-head radiation imaging device within its driving range. For the effectiveness in sensing, installation point was decided according to the finite element deformation analysis of the device model. The proposed sensor was implemented to the device, and then the result was evaluated by comparison with an optical tracker position data. In this method, attachable optical system were designed and implemented to the dedicated radiography system. From the attachment test relative deformation data of two orthogonal X-Ray tube and detector sets were obtained simultaneously by two image sensors attached on each of them. Laser spot orbits were obtained as a result, and were compared with optical tracker data results for verification. The proposed method significantly reduces costs and time spent for calibration process while satisfying micro scale precision requirements and it is applicable to other rotation mechanical system. Comprising devices costs much less than the manufacturing or purchasing a dedicated geometry phantoms, because this method only requires a low powered spot laser and a CMOS Camera plus additional optical devices
