Simultaneous X-ray/optical observations of GX 9+9 (4U 1728-16)
We report on the results of the first simultaneous X-ray (RXTE) and optical
(SAAO) observations of the luminous low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 9+9 in 1999
August. The high-speed optical photometry revealed an orbital period of 4.1958
hr and confirmed previous observations, but with greater precision. No X-ray
modulation was found at the orbital period. On shorter timescales, a possible
1.4-hr variability was found in the optical light curves which might be related
to the mHz quasi-periodic oscillations seen in other LMXBs. We do not find any
significant X-ray/optical correlation in the light curves. In X-rays, the
colour-colour diagram and hardness-intensity diagram indicate that the source
shows characteristics of an atoll source in the upper banana state, with a
correlation between intensity and spectral hardness. Time-resolved X-ray
spectroscopy suggests that two-component spectral models give a reasonable fit
to the X-ray emission. Such models consist of a blackbody component which can
be interpreted as the emission from an optically thick accretion disc or an
optically thick boundary layer, and a hard Comptonized component for an

Single grain heating due to inelastic cotunneling
We study heating effects of a single metallic quantum dot weakly coupled to
two leads. The dominant mechanism for heating at low temperatures is due to
inelastic electron cotunneling processes. We calculate the grain temperature
profile as a function of grain parameters, bias voltage, and time and show that
for nanoscale size grains the heating effects are pronounced and easily

A web system trace model and its application to web design
Traceability analysis is crucial to the development of web-centric systems, particularly those with frequent system changes, fine-grained evolution and maintenance, and high level of requirements uncertainty. A trace model at the level of the web system architecture is presented in this paper to address the specific challenges of developing web-centric systems. The trace model separates the concerns of different stakeholders in the web development life cycle into viewpoints; and classifies each viewpoint into structure and behaviour. Tracing relationships are presented along two dimensions: within viewpoints; and among viewpoints. Examples of tracing relationships are presented using UML. This trace model is demonstrated through its application to the design of a commercial web project using a web-design process. The design artifacts in each activity are transformed based on the artifacts tracing relationship in the trace model. The model provides mechanisms for verification of consistency, completeness and coverage within each viewpoint and the connectedness across viewpoints
Phonon self-energy corrections to non-zero wavevector phonon modes in single-layer graphene
Phonon self-energy corrections have mostly been studied theoretically and
experimentally for phonon modes with zone-center (q = 0) wave-vectors. Here,
gate-modulated Raman scattering is used to study phonons of a single layer of
graphene (1LG) in the frequency range from 2350 to 2750 cm-1, which shows the
G* and the G'-band features originating from a double-resonant Raman process
with q \not= 0. The observed phonon renormalization effects are different from
what is observed for the zone-center q = 0 case. To explain our experimental
findings, we explored the phonon self-energy for the phonons with non-zero
wave-vectors (q \not= 0) in 1LG in which the frequencies and decay widths are
expected to behave oppositely to the behavior observed in the corresponding
zone-center q = 0 processes. Within this framework, we resolve the
identification of the phonon modes contributing to the G* Raman feature at 2450
cm-1 to include the iTO+LA combination modes with q \not= 0 and the 2iTO
overtone modes with q = 0, showing both to be associated with wave-vectors near
the high symmetry point K in the Brillouin zone
Separation of concerns: A web application architecture framework
Architecture frameworks have been extensively developed and described within the literature. These frameworks typically support and guide organisations during system planning, design, building, deployment and maintenance. Their main pupose is to provide clarity to the different modelling perspectives, abstractions, and domains of consideration within system development. In dpoing so they allow improved clarity with regard to the connections between the different models, and the selection of models tht are most likely to capture salient features of the system. In this paper we present an Architectural Framework which takes into account the specific characteristics of web systems. The framework is based around a two dimensional matrix. One dimension separates the concerns of different participants of the web system into perspectives. The second dimension classifies each perspective into development abstractions: structure (what), behaviour (how), location (where) and pattern. The framework is illustrated through examples from the development of a commercial web application
Evolution equations of curvature tensors along the hyperbolic geometric flow
We consider the hyperbolic geometric flow introduced by Kong and Liu [KL]. When the Riemannian
metric evolve, then so does its curvature. Using the techniques and ideas of
S.Brendle [Br,BS], we derive evolution equations for the Levi-Civita connection
and the curvature tensors along the hyperbolic geometric flow. The method and
results are computed and written in global tensor form, different from the
local normal coordinate method in [DKL1]. In addition, we further show that any
solution to the hyperbolic geometric flow that develops a singularity in finite
time has unbounded Ricci curvature.Comment: 15 page
