Internet killed the b-boy star: a study of b-boying through the lens of contemporary media
The twentieth century could hardly be characterized without a reference to the Internet, a global system of interconnected computers that serve billions of users worldwide. As personal lives are further occupied by this new technology, the Internet has naturally also spread to the realm of education, where teachers have begun to see the Internet as a convenient, effective, and adaptable teaching tool for students both young and older. The American education rests on an oral tradition — teacher-to-student verbal communication is crucial to the system, as the norm of both parties occupying the same physical space. For dance education, this traditional method is even further rooted in the learning process; one would be hard-pressed to imagine a formal dance class in which a teacher is not physically demonstrating, in one form or another, to her students. In Barnard College's Dance Program, the Internet is utilized in a variety of ways to enhance the learning experience. Increasingly, professors have begun to use websites as legitimate sources of educational material and present websites, such as YouTube.com, as reliable sources of historical and/or international dance footage. This paper seeks to understand the effects of the increasing use of new media, specifically the Internet, on the traditions of b-boying since its origins in the 1970's. I seek first to establish the idea of the b-boy star-the original b-boy who embodies the style and philosophies rooted in the traditions of the 1970's. I will examine each specific element that created this "star" — his way of life, the sacredness of b-boy communities, and the foundational style of his dance form. Then, I will examine how the contemporary media, such as MTV and Reality Television, have presented the b-boy dance form to the American people. Lastly, I will discuss how the Internet undermines the core qualities of a b-boy with the creation of a virtual space or community for breaking. Ultimately, this paper seeks to understand how the Internet has changed the way that a dance can be learned, communicated, and evaluated by dancers and the rest of the world
The Antitumor Effects of Plasma-Activated Saline on Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer Cells in Vitro and in Vivo Demonstrate Its Feasibility as a Potential Therapeutic Approach
Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is a fast-growing and aggressive malignant tumor in urinary system. Since chemotherapy and immunotherapy are only useable with a few MIBC patients, the clinical treatment of MIBC still faces challenges. Here, we examined the feasibility of plasma-activated saline (PAS) as a fledgling therapeutic strategy for MIBC treatment. Our data showed that plasma irradiation could generate a variety of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in saline. In vivo tests revealed that pericarcinomatous tissue injection with PAS was effective at preventing subcutaneous bladder tumor growth, with no side effects to the visceral organs after long-term administration, as well as having no obvious influence on the various biochemistry indices of the blood in mice. The in vitro studies indicated that adding 30% PAS in cell culture media causes oxidative damage to the bladder transitional cells T24 and J82 through enhancing the intracellular ROS level, and eventually induces cancer cells\u27 apoptosis by activating the ROS-mediated Fas/CD95 pathway. Therefore, for an intracavity tumor, these initial observations suggest that the soaking of the tumor tissue with PAS by intravesical perfusion may be a novel treatment option for bladder cancer
Quantifying the Concentration and Penetration Depth of Long-Lived RONS in Plasma Activated Water by UV Absorption Spectroscopy
Reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species (RONS) are believed to play a key role in biomedical applications, which means that RONS must reach the target tissue to produce a therapeutic effect. Existing methods (electron spin spectrometry and microplate reading) to determine the RONS concentration are not suitable for experimental real-time measurements because they require adding an indicating reagent to the plasma-treated medium, which may alter the chemical composition of the medium. In this paper, we propose a method to measure the long-lived RONS concentration in plasma-activated water (PAW) by using UV absorption spectroscopy. Based on an analysis and fit of the absorption spectra of standard solutions (H2O2, NaNO2, and NaNO3), we propose a detailed fitting procedure that allows us to calculate the concentrations of simplex H2O2, NO2−, and NO3−. The results show that the pH and the cross reactivity between RONS in PAW correlate strongly with the absorption spectra. To confirm the accuracy of the calculations, we also use a microplate reader and add chemical reagents to measure the concentrations of H2O2, NO2−, and NO3−. The results show that the concentrations calculated by the proposed fitting method are relatively accurate and that the error range is acceptable. Additionally, the time-dependent diffusion of RONS in PAW is measured and analyzed at different depths in the PAW. This fitting approach constitutes a nonintrusive approach to measure RONS at different depths in PAW
Adaptive Geometry Images for Remeshing
Geometry images are a kind of completely regular remeshing methods for mesh representation. Traditional geometry images have difficulties in achieving optimal reconstruction errors and preserving manually selected geometric details, due to the limitations of parametrization methods. To solve two issues, we propose two adaptive geometry images for remeshing triangular meshes. The first scheme produces geometry images with the minimum Hausdorff error by finding the optimization direction for sampling points based on the Hausdorff distance between the original mesh and the reconstructed mesh. The second scheme produces geometry images with higher reconstruction precision over the manually selected region-of-interest of the input mesh, by increasing the number of sampling points over the region-of-interest. Experimental results show that both schemes give promising results compared with traditional parametrization-based geometry images
Effect of He Plasma Jet Versus Surface Plasma on the Metabolites of Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells
Cold atmospheric plasma, including plasma jet and surface plasma, can promote the apoptosis of cancer cells without causing significant damage to surrounding normal cells, which was hopeful to be applied to the clinical cancer therapy. However, experimental plasma devices used directly to clinical experiments has challenges in technology and methods, especially the difference in killing tumor cells efficiency of these two common plasma sources. Therefore, it is great necessity to explore the differences in treating tumors between different plasma sources. This paper achieved good killing efficiency by using two kinds of cold atmospheric plasma generating devices, namely plasma jet and surface plasma treatment along acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The results showed that the He plasma jet kills leukemia cells more efficiently than surface plasma with the same voltage and frequency and the same time. By GC-TOFMS and metabolomics analysis, this paper compared the differential metabolites of leukemia cells treated by two plasma devices and the key metabolic pathways closely related to differential metabolites. Simultaneously, we found alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism was most correlated with a key differential metabolite, glutamine. It was found that the glutaminase activity of He plasma jet group was lower than that of surface plasma group, which might be a reason for He plasma jet group to kill tumor cells better. It was also worth noting that relative quantity of glucose metabolites of plasma jet treatment group was lower than that of surface plasma treatment group. This study provides the basis for clinical trials for future
SYENet: A Simple Yet Effective Network for Multiple Low-Level Vision Tasks with Real-time Performance on Mobile Device
With the rapid development of AI hardware accelerators, applying deep
learning-based algorithms to solve various low-level vision tasks on mobile
devices has gradually become possible. However, two main problems still need to
be solved: task-specific algorithms make it difficult to integrate them into a
single neural network architecture, and large amounts of parameters make it
difficult to achieve real-time inference. To tackle these problems, we propose
a novel network, SYENet, with only 6K parameters, to handle multiple
low-level vision tasks on mobile devices in a real-time manner. The SYENet
consists of two asymmetrical branches with simple building blocks. To
effectively connect the results by asymmetrical branches, a Quadratic
Connection Unit(QCU) is proposed. Furthermore, to improve performance, a new
Outlier-Aware Loss is proposed to process the image. The proposed method proves
its superior performance with the best PSNR as compared with other networks in
real-time applications such as Image Signal Processing(ISP), Low-Light
Enhancement(LLE), and Super-Resolution(SR) with 2K60FPS throughput on Qualcomm
8 Gen 1 mobile SoC(System-on-Chip). Particularly, for ISP task, SYENet got the
highest score in MAI 2022 Learned Smartphone ISP challenge
Inactivation of Myeloma Cancer Cells by Helium and Argon Plasma Jets: The Effect Comparison and the Key Reactive Species
In plasma cancer therapy, the inactivation of cancer cells under plasma treatment is closely related to the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) induced by plasmas. Quantitative study on the plasma-induced RONS that related to cancer cells apoptosis is critical for advancing the research of plasma cancer therapy. In this paper, the effects of several reactive species on the inactivation of LP-1 myeloma cancer cells are comparatively studied with variable working gas composition, surrounding gas composition, and discharge power. The results show that helium plasma jet has a higher cell inactivation efficiency than argon plasma jet under the same discharge power. By comparing the concentration of aqueous phase reactive species and the cell inactivation efficiency under different working gases and discharge powers, it is demonstrated that the inactivation efficiency of LP-1 myeloma cancer cells is strongly correlated with the concentration of peroxynitrite (ONOOH/ONOO-). Intracellular ROS Mediates Gas Plasma-Facilitated Cellular Transfection in 2D and 3D Cultures
This study reports the potential of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) as a versatile tool for delivering oligonucleotides into mammalian cells. Compared to lipofection and electroporation methods, plasma transfection showed a better uptake efficiency and less cell death in the transfection of oligonucleotides. We demonstrated that the level of extracellular aqueous reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by gas plasma is correlated with the uptake efficiency and that this is achieved through an increase of intracellular ROS levels and the resulting increase in cell membrane permeability. This finding was supported by the use of ROS scavengers, which reduced CAP-based uptake efficiency. In addition, we found that cold atmospheric plasma could transfer oligonucleotides such as siRNA and miRNA into cells even in 3D cultures, thus suggesting the potential for unique applications of CAP beyond those provided by standard transfection techniques. Together, our results suggest that cold plasma might provide an efficient technique for the delivery of siRNA and miRNA in 2D and 3D culture models
Production and Correlation of Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species in Gas- and Liquid-Phase Generated by Helium Plasma Jets Under Different Pulse Widths
In this paper, we present the effects of the pulse width (PW) on the plasma jet\u27s discharge characteristics, particularly focusing on the production and correlation of the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in gas- and liquid-phase. It is found that the length of plasma jet plume first increases before the PW of 10 μs, then gradually decreases and finally almost remains unchanged beyond 150 μs. The plasma bullet disappears after the falling edge of the voltage pulse at low PW, while it terminates far ahead of the falling edge of voltage pulse at high PW. This is mainly attributed to accumulation of space charges that lead to weakening of the reduced electric field with an increase of PW from low to high. More important, it is found that the excited reactive species, the positive and negative ions from plasma jet, and the concentrations of NO2– and NO3– in deionized water exposed to plasma jet so display the first increasing and then decreasing change trend with increase of PW, while the concentration of H2O2 in water almost displays the linearly increasing trend. This mainly results from the formation of the H3O+ and HO2–, as well as their ion water clusters that can produce more OH radicals to be converted into H2O2, while the NO2– and NO3– in gas phase can transport into water and exist most stably in water. The water cluster formation at gas-liquid interface is an important key process that can affect the chemical nature and dose of aqueous RONS in water; this is beneficial for understanding how the RONS are formed in liquid-phase.
