Board game for the engineering students to promote interest in city infrastructure courses

[EN] Learning is a complex process that includes self-motivation, self-control and self-discipline. The efficiency of learning depends on the motivation of students and overall atmosphere in the classroom. At the same time, promotion of interest to communicate out of the classroom is of the same importance. Furthermore, if students find an interest in a specific professional field during the out-of-classroom activities, the study process in engineering sciences becomes easier and more enjoyable. To promote the interest in engineering studies at Riga Technical University study programme Heat, Gas and Water Technology, workshops at the infrastructure units of the related industry representatives, summer workshops in the sports, seminar and recreation centre, as well as basketball and table tennis competition between teachers and students are organized on a regular basis. Through the thematic games, teachers find the motivation to upgrade the quality of the study process and students gain more information on the topic and ability to achieve higher results. The proposed board game for the out-of-classroom activities is a successful method to facilitate the communication between lecturers and students in practice. At the same time, the game contains control questions that allow to stimulate and promote the knowledge level of the students.Kokina, K.; Mezule, L.; Borodinecs, A. (2021). Impact of Rapid pH Changes on Activated Sludge Process

    No full text
The inhibition effect of rapid variations of pH in wastewater on activated sludge was investigated in laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR). The toxic influence of pH 6.5 and 8.5 was examined. The experiment with pH 8.5 was preferable to formation of high FA concentration and showed a low risk of inhibition of second step nitrification (conversion of nitrites to nitrates). However, the reactor at pH 6.5 showed inhibition of first-step nitrification (conversion of ammonia to nitrites) caused by FNA formation. High ammonia levels caused a decrease in the overall microfauna population, whereas low–enhanced gymnamoebae, Zoogloea, and Chilodonella sp. population increased after 72 h of inhibition. Destructive acidic pH influence caused sludge washout from the reactor and, therefore, higher organic load on ASP and intensive sludge foam due to Zoogloea higher population

Multi-Element Profile Characterization of Monofloral and Polyfloral Honey from Latvia

    No full text
Honey is of scientific interest mainly due to its health-promoting and antibacterial properties, which are also associated with its floral origins. However, the methods for confirming honey floral origins are quite limited and require improvements. One method suggested in the search for a multi-method approach to evaluating the floral origins of Latvian honey is inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This study investigated the multi-element profile of 83 honey samples of well-specified floral origins. The main findings included using Ba, Ca, Cs, Fe, and Rb as indicator elements for heather honey. The chemometric evaluation supported the use of ICP-MS for distinguishing heather honey from other types of honey. The Latvian polyfloral honey multi-element profile was defined and compared to honey samples with other geographical origins. Additionally, the multi-element profiles of buckwheat, clover, and polyfloral honey proteins were investigated to clarify whether the majority of elements were bound with proteins or not. Preliminary results indicated that Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Na, and Sr were mainly found in non-protein-bound forms, while the majority of Al, Cu, Ni, and Zn were in the form of large chemical structures (>10 kDa)

Genomic analysis of sewage from 101 countries reveals global landscape of antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to global health. Understanding the emergence, evolution, and transmission of individual antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is essential to develop sustainable strategies combatting this threat. Here, we use metagenomic sequencing to analyse ARGs in 757 sewage samples from 243 cities in 101 countries, collected from 2016 to 2019. We find regional patterns in resistomes, and these differ between subsets corresponding to drug classes and are partly driven by taxonomic variation. The genetic environments of 49 common ARGs are highly diverse, with most common ARGs carried by multiple distinct genomic contexts globally and sometimes on plasmids. Analysis of flanking sequence revealed ARG-specific patterns of dispersal limitation and global transmission. Our data furthermore suggest certain geographies are more prone to transmission events and should receive additional attention
