    Scattering polarization of 3-μ\mum water-ice feature by large icy grains

    Water ice has a strong spectral feature at a wavelength of approximately 3 μ3~\mum, which plays a vital role in our understanding of the icy universe. In this study, we investigate the scattering polarization of this water-ice feature. The linear polarization degree of light scattered by μ\mum-sized icy grains is known to be enhanced at the ice band; however, the dependence of this polarization enhancement on various grain properties is unclear. We find that the enhanced polarization at the ice band is sensitive to the presence of μ\mum-sized grains as well as their ice abundance. We demonstrate that this enhancement is caused by the high absorbency of the water-ice feature, which attenuates internal scattering and renders the surface reflection dominant over internal scattering. Additionally, we compare our models with polarimetric observations of the low-mass protostar L1551 IRS 5. Our results show that scattering by a maximum grain radius of a few microns with a low water-ice abundance is consistent with observations. Thus, scattering polarization of the water-ice feature is a useful tool for characterizing ice properties in various astronomical environments.Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, 1 table; Accepted for publication in Ap

    A numerical study of the complex flow structure in a compound meandering channel

    In this study, we report large eddy simulations of turbulent flow in a periodic compound meandering channel for three different depth conditions: one in-bank and two overbank conditions. The flow configuration corresponds to the experiments of Shiono and Muto (1998). The predicted mean streamwise velocities, mean secondary motions, velocity fluctuations, turbulent kinetic energy as well as mean flood flow angle to meandering channel are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. We have analyzed the flow structure as a function of the inundation level, with particular emphasis on the development of the secondary motions due to the interaction between the main channel and the floodplain flow. Bed shear stresses have been also estimated in the simulations. Floodplain flow has a significant impact on the flow structure leading to significantly different bed shear stress patterns within the main meandering channel. The implications of these results for natural compound meandering channels are also discussed

    Differenting Cushing’s disease from myasthenia gravis : A case report

    The patient is a 77-year-old woman with a history of diabetes mellitus that was refractory to the medication and dietary restrictions. Four months prior to the admission, she developed a dropped head and ptosis that worsened in the evening. These symptoms were improved by the edrophonium test and the 3 Hz repetitive nerve stimulation testing was positive ; nevertheless, anti-acetylcholine and anti-muscle-specific tyrosine kinase antibodies were negative. Further examination demonstrated sustained hypokalemia and high levels of cortisol and ACTH. Moreover, CRH and high-dose dexamethasone suppression testings were positive and MRI demonstrated pituitary microadenoma. Based on these findings, she was subsequently diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. After the resection of the pituitary tumor, ptosis improved with an alleviation of systemic edema, suggesting that it was caused by an eyelid edema. This case uniquely illustrates that Cushing’s disease may mimic myasthenia gravis. Differentiation of the two disorders is crucial as treatment with steroids could compromise the interpretation of diagnostic testings for Cushing’s disease and might result in a disease exacerbation. In this case, the history of treatment-refractory diabetes mellitus was helpful cue to differentiate the two disorders

    Design and lyophilization of lipid nanoparticles for mRNA vaccine and its robust immune response in mice and nonhuman primates

    mRNA and lipid nanoparticles have emerged as powerful systems for the preparation of vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The emergence of novel variants or the necessity of cold chain logistics for approved mRNA vaccines undermines the investigation of next-generation systems that could preserve both potency and stability. However, the correlation between lipid nanoparticle composition and activity is not fully explored. Here, we screened a panel of ionizable lipids in vivo and identified lead lipid nanoparticles with a branched-tail lipid structure. Buffer optimization allowed the determination of lyophilization conditions, where lipid nanoparticle-encapsulated mRNA encoding SARS-CoV-2 spike protein could induce robust immunogenicity in mice after 1 month of storage at 5°C and 25°C. Intramuscularly injected lipid nanoparticles distributed in conventional dendritic cells in mouse lymph nodes induced balanced T helper (Th) 1/Th2 responses against SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. In nonhuman primates, two doses of 10 or 100 μg of mRNA induced higher spike-specific binding geometric mean titers than those from a panel of SARS-CoV-2-convalescent human sera. Immunized sera broadly inhibited the viral entry receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) from binding to the spike protein in all six strains tested, including variants of concern. These results could provide useful information for designing next-generation mRNA vaccines

    Muscular and Performance Fitness and the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes: Prospective Study of Japanese Men

    Background: Limited data are available on the relationship between muscular and performance fitness (MPF) and the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cohort of 3792 Japanese men completed a medical examination that included MPF and cardiorespiratory fitness tests. MPF index composite score was calculated using Z-scores from vertical jump, sit-ups, side step, and functional reach tests. Results: The mean follow-up period was 187 months (15.6 years). There were 240 patients who developed type 2 diabetes during follow-up. Relative risks and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for incidence of diabetes across baseline quartiles of MPF index composite score were obtained using the Cox proportional hazard model while adjusting for age, BMI, diastolic blood pressure, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake, and family history of diabetes. The relative risks for developing diabetes across quartiles of MPF index composite scores (lowest to highest) were 1.0 (referent), 1.15 (95% CI 0.83-1.60), 1.10 (0.78-1.55), and 0.57 (0.37-0.90) (P for trend = .061). These results were attenuated after adjustment for cardiorespiratory fitness (P for trend = .125). Conclusions: This prospective study suggests that MPF is a predictor of type 2 diabetes, although its predictive ability was attenuated after adjusting for cardiorespiratory fitness
