    Development of a fiber structure in poly(vinylidene fluoride) by a CO(2) laser-heated drawing process

    Rapid and uniform heating by CO(2) laser radiation can fix the position where necking occurs. Therefore, this study investigated the development of a fiber structure in poly(vinylidene fluoride) in continuous drawing by in situ measurement using synchrotron X-ray radiation with a time resolution of several hundred microseconds. Two neck-deformation behaviors were observed in the laser drawing: a moderate neck deformation under low drawing stress and a steep neck deformation under high drawing stress. The low drawing stress resulted in a mixture of alpha- and beta-crystals in which the beta-crystal was formed within 1ms after the necking, earlier than the alpha-crystal. The development of the fiber structure under high drawing stress was almost complete in less than 1 ms, and the developed structure contained only beta-crystals. Small-angle X-ray scattering images showed meridional streaks at low drawing stress, whereas a four-pointed pattern occurred under high drawing stress. Low drawing stress generated a long periodic structure that was defective in the periodic regularity of crystalline and amorphous regions, although the molecular chains were nearly oriented along the fiber axis. The high drawing stress resulted in a well-packed structure of adjacent fibrils with alternating amorphous and crystalline regions.     DJ-1 degrades transthyretin and an inactive form of DJ-1 is secreted in familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy.

    DJ-1 plays roles in transcriptional regulation and anti-oxidative stress, and loss of its function is thought to result in the onset of Parkinson's disease. DJ-1 has a protease-like structure and transthyretin (TTR), a protein causing familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP), was identified as a substrate for DJ-1 protease in this study. Both TTR and DJ-1 were secreted into the culture medium under normal conditions, and secreted TTR was not aggregated. Under oxidative conditions, TTR but not DJ-1 was secreted into the culture medium, resulting in aggregation. Mirror images of both the expression patterns and solubility of DJ-1 and TTR were observed in tissues of FAP patients, and an unoxidized form of DJ-1, an inactive form, was secreted into the serum of FAP patients. These results suggest that oxidative stress to cells abrogates secretion of DJ-1 and that secreted DJ-1 degrades aggregated TTR to protect against the onset of FAP

    Fiber Spinning from Cellulose Solutions in Imidazolium Ionic Liquids: Effects of Natural Antioxidants on Molecular Weight, Dope Discoloration, and Yellowing Behavior

    Spinning of cellulosic fibers requires the prior dissolution of cellulose. 3-Alkyl-1-methylimidazolium ionic liquids have proven to be suitable solvents for that purpose, but the degradation of cellulose in the spinning dope can be severe. Suitable stabilizers are therefore required that prevent cellulose degradation, but do not adversely affect spinnability or the long-term yellowing behavior of the fibers. A group of twelve renewables-based antioxidants was selected for stabilizing 5% cellulose solutions in the ionic liquids and their effects on cellulose integrity, dope discoloration, and aging behavior were tested by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and ISO brightness measurements. Propyl gallate (a gallic acid derivative), hydroxytyrosol (from olives), and tocopheramines (a vitamin E derivative) performed best in the three test categories, minimizing both cellulose degradation, chromophore formation in the spinning dope, and yellowing upon accelerating aging of the spun fibers. The use of these stabilizers for cellulose solutions in the imidazolium-based solvent system can therefore be recommended from the point of view of both performance and sustainability
