Passive mode-locking and terahertz frequency comb generation in resonant-tunneling-diode oscillator

Optical frequency combs in the terahertz frequency range are long-awaited frequency standards for spectroscopy of molecules and high-speed wireless communications. However, a terahertz frequency comb based on a low-cost, energy-efficient, and room-temperature-operating device remains unavailable especially in the frequency range of 0.1 to 3 THz. In this paper, we show that the resonant-tunneling-diode (RTD) oscillator can be passively mode-locked by optical feedback and generate a terahertz frequency comb. The standard deviation of the spacing between the comb lines, i.e., the repetition frequency, is reduced to less than 420 mHz by applying external bias modulation. A simulation model successfully reproduces the mode-locking behavior by including the nonlinear capacitance of RTD and multiple optical feedback. Since the mode-locked RTD oscillator is a simple semiconductor device that operates at room temperature and covers the frequency range of 0.1 to 2 THz (potentially up to 3 THz), it can be used as a frequency standard for future terahertz sensing and wireless communications

Arsenic Contamination of Groundwater at the Middle Basin of Ganges in India

This paper shows the situation and mechanism of arsenic contamination of groundwater at the worst contaminated areas in UP (Uttar Pradesh) state, India, which is obtained from the integrated arsenic mitigation project by University of Miyazaki under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Partnership Program (JPP). The project has been executed from 2008 until now. The integrated mitigation, such as the raising awareness of villager, installing of alternative water supply units and healthcare of arsenocosis patients, have been executed at the 2 villages. The symptom of the arsenocosis patients was not so severe, which will be, therefore, improved by drinking arsenic-safe water supplied through arsenic removal units, installed by this project. We have obtained following results for the situation and mechanism of arsenic contamination of groundwater, objected in connection with the installation of arsenic removal units:(1) Groundwater is almost contaminated with arsenic in deep tubewell (depth: about 30m), but scarcely in shallow tubewell (depth: about 10m). (2) Arsenic contaminated groundwater is under the reduced condition with the oxidized condition for no-arsenic contaminated groundwater. (3) Arsenic concentration shows almost linear correlation with concentrations of Fe2+ and NH4+-N. (4) Ground is composed of sand with high arsenic content at around 25m depth. (5) Arsenic exists mainly in the phase of reducible fraction or weak acid soluble fraction but no oxidizable fraction in the ground

現代日本の霊性思想の中心である精神世界(所謂スピリチュアル)では、講演や展示を主とした「ブース出展型イベント」が大きな位置を占めている。ここでは「魂のレベル上げ」を中心とするニューエイジ的思想を引き継ぎながらも、様々な霊性が混在し、「エネルギー酔い」や「霊障」といった現象も見られる。この霊的輻輳状態はスピリチュアリズムを幹とし、ある程度定まっていた戦前の霊性思想とは対照的である。本論文は、「宗教、研究、術式、大衆文化」という4つの視座に立ち、戦後の霊性思想が何故輻輳したのか、その変化の一因に4つの相互関係の変化があったと推定し、これを検証したものである

Exploration of the Soul. Part 1 : Effectiveness of Qualitative field survey in Study on Japanese spirituality

精神世界（いわゆるスピリチュアル）に関する研究は、島薗進によって提唱された「新霊性運動」を基礎に、宗教・聖地・サブカルチャーなど多岐に渡る分野で論じられ、関係者のブログやホームページ、著書、市場へのアンケートなどを中心に研究されてきた。一方、現地調査にもとづいて調査対象の実態の分析を行った研究は、筆者の知る限り多くない。本論文はこれまでなされてきた文書研究・文書分析や量的調査に、現地調査にもとづく具体的事例を加えることにより、先行研究の補完・発展を試み、精神世界と関わりの深い「宗教」、「心霊研究」、「聖地」、「サブカルチャー」の視座から検証を行って、精神世界に何が起きているのか、より正確な実態に即した理解に寄与することを目的としている。前編ではなぜ質的現地調査が必要なのか論じつつその事例を扱い、後編では引き続き事例を扱いながら現代の精神世界の実態に迫る

Surgical treatment of metastatic vertebral tumors

Surgical treatment of metastatic spinal cord compression is controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of our current surgical treatments and the use of spinal instrumentation. In this retrospective study covering the years between 1990 and 2006, 100 patients with spinal metastases which were secondary to various cancers underwent posterior and/or anterior decompression with spinal stabilization for the purposes of reduction of pain, and/or to help correct or improve neurological deficits. The group was made up of 60 men and 40 women whose ages ranged from 16 to 83 years (average of 60 years), and the average follow-up period was 14 months. The effect of treatment upon pain relief and neural deficits was assessed, and the cumulative survival rate was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method. The average surgical time was 185min. This was calculated based on the following times, listed here with the surgery type:178min for posterior surgery;245min for anterior surgery;465 min for combined surgery;and 475min for total en bloc spondylectomy. Average blood loss during surgery was 1,630 ml for posterior surgery, 1,760 ml for anterior surgery, 1,930 ml for combined surgery, and 3,640 ml for total en bloc spondylectomy. Preoperative pain and paralysis were improved by 88% and 53%, respectively. In regards to surgical complications, postoperative epidural hematoma was observed in 2 patients, and instrumentation-related infection was observed in 1. Only 2 patients died within 2 months of surgery. In conclusion, posterior and/or anterior decompression with spinal stabilization is a safe and effective treatment for patients with spinal metastases, and can improve their quality of life.</p

霊とマスク : コロナ禍における精神世界の実情

筆者の研究では、2017年頃から、それまでは個別に活動していた精神世界関係者が霊性にかかわる目的のために集い、協働のため組織化するという動きが確認されるようになった（伊藤2020：13-19）。したがって本論文では、これらの新しい形態を「霊性にかんする協働組織」と名づけて、その実態を分析してみたい。筆者が接触を持つことができた協働組織は、会員が広範囲にわたってLINEやFacebookなどのSNSを通して交流し、神社や地域の聖地などを活動拠点にしている。その地域に密着した世話人が存在しているが、世話人は協働組織の統括者ではなく、人々が集うための場所を提供したり、連絡関係の中心となっているだけで、あくまでも「世話人」の域を超えていない。これらの協働組織は、「聖地の保守管理」や「金星のエネルギーを地下に落として地上を安定させる」などの具体的な目的を持って集まっており、この目的さえ同じであれば、その技法や思想背景は問われない。一例をあげれば、チャネリングを行う会員であってもハイアーセルフとのチャネリング、守護天使とのチャネリング、先祖霊とのチャネリングなど対象は違っており、またタロットであっても使用するタロットの種類が違ったり、同じ種類のタロットであっても扱い方が違うなど、同じ精神世界の中で技法や思想が全く違う者同士が集まっている。また、これらの協働組織は、新型コロナウィルス感染症対策に関しては行政の方針に対して概して批判的であり、定期的に集まってヒーリングやリーディングのために対面で接触することに抵抗を持たず、平常時と同程度の換気はするが感染防止のための換気を行うこともない。その姿勢を特徴づけるものの1つに「マスクを着用しない」ということがある。公共交通機関に乗ったり、コンビニエンスストアなどの店舗に行く時の為にマスクは所持しているが、これは「周囲を怖がらせないため」、「反社会的にみられないため」であり、いずれの協働組織においても自分たちの集まりでは、誰一人としてマスクを着用していない。さらに彼らは、「ワクチン接種」にも反対しており、集まった際にはいつも「ワクチンを打ってはいけない」ことと「ワクチン開発には裏がある」ということについて論じ合っている。一方、同じ霊性を扱っていても、宗教団体では、神道における鈴紐の撤去や手洗場の閉鎖、キリスト教会における礼拝の取りやめやオンライン化、讃美歌を歌わないなど、徹底した感染対策がなされている。本論文は霊性にかんする協働組織への現地調査を中心に、精神世界関係者がコロナ禍をどのように捉えているのかを明らかにすることを目的とし、その上で宗教団体との比較を通して、現代における両者の思想の違いについて論じたものである

Borehole water and hydrologic model around the Nojima fault, SW Japan

International audienceThe active fault drilling at Nojima Hirabayashi after the 1995 Hyogoken-nanbu (Kobe) earthquake (MJMA = 7.2) provides us with a unique opportunity to investigate subsurface fault structure and the in-situ properties of fault and fluid. The borehole intersected the fault gouge of the Nojima fault at a depth interval of 623m to 625m. The lithology is mostly Cretaceous granodiorite with some porphyry dikes. The fault core is highly permeable due to fracturing. The borehole water was sampled in 1996 and 2000 from the depth interval between 630 and 650 m, just below the fault core. The chemical and isotopic compositions were analyzed. Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of carbonates from the fault core were analyzed to estimate the origin of fluid. The following conclusions were obtained. (1) The ionic and isotopic compositions of borehole water did not change from 1996 to 2000. They are mostly derived from local ground water as mentioned by Sato and Takahashi (2000). (2) Geochemical speciation revealed that the borehole water was derived from a relatively deep reservoir, which may be situated at a depth of 3 to 4 km where the temperature is about 80-90 ̊C. (3) The shallower part of the Nojima fault (shallower than the reservoir depth) has not been healed from the hydrological viewpoints 5 years after the event, in contrast to the rapid healing detected by S wave splitting (Tadokoro and Ando, 2002). (4) Precipitation of calcite from present borehole water since drilling supports the idea of precipitation of some calcite in coseismic hydraulic fractures in the fault core (Boullier et al., 2004). (5) Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of calcite indicated that the meteoric water flux had been localized at the fault core. (6) A difference in the carbon isotope ratio between the footwall and the hangingwall suggests that the fault has been acted as a hydrologic barrier, although the permeability along the fault is still high
