Reconstructing Supersymmetric Contribution to Muon Anomalous Magnetic Dipole Moment at ILC

We study the possibility to determine the supersymmetric (SUSY) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic dipole moment by using ILC measurements of the properties of superparticles. Assuming that the contribution is as large as the current discrepancy between the result of the Brookhaven E821 experiment and the standard-model prediction, we discuss how and how accurately the SUSY contribution can be reconstructed. We will show that, in a sample point, the reconstruction can be performed with the accuracy of ~ 13 % with the center-of-mass energy 500 GeV and the integrated luminosity ~ 500-1000 fb-1.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; references added, to be published in Phys.Lett.

Thermoelectric properties and electronic structure of the Zintl phase Sr_5Al_2Sb_6

The Zintl phase Sr_5Al_2Sb_6 has a large, complex unit cell and is composed of relatively earth-abundant and non-toxic elements, making it an attractive candidate for thermoelectric applications. The structure of Sr_5Al_2Sb_6 is characterized by infinite oscillating chains of AlSb_4 tetrahedra. It is distinct from the structure type of the previously studied Ca_5M_2Sb_6 compounds (M = Al, Ga or In), all of which have been shown to have promising thermoelectric performance. The lattice thermal conductivity of Sr_5Al_2Sb_6 (∼0.55 W mK^(-1) at 1000 K) was found to be lower than that of the related Ca_5M_2Sb_6 compounds due to its larger unit cell (54 atoms per primitive cell). Density functional theory predicts a relatively large band gap in Sr_5Al_2Sb_6, in agreement with the experimentally determined band gap of E_g ∼ 0.5 eV. High temperature electronic transport measurements reveal high resistivity and high Seebeck coefficients in Sr_5Al_2Sb_6, consistent with the large band gap and valence-precise structure. Doping with Zn^(2+) on the Al^(3+) site was attempted, but did not lead to the expected increase in carrier concentration. The low lattice thermal conductivity and large band gap in Sr_5Al_2Sb_6 suggest that, if the carrier concentration can be increased, thermoelectric performance comparable to that of Ca_5Al_2Sb_6 could be achieved in this system

Many people are affected by tinnitus, a sensation of ringing in the ear despite the absence of external sound. Goshajinkigan (GJG) is one of the formulations of Japanese traditional herbal medicine and is prescribed for the palliative treatment of patients with tinnitus. Although GJG is clinically effective in these patients, its behavioral effects and the underlying neuroanatomical substrate have not been modeled in animals. We modeled tinnitus using salicylate-treated rats, demonstrated the effectiveness of GJG on tinnitus, and examined the underlying neuronal substrate with c-Fos expression. Intraperitoneal injection of sodium salicylate (400 mg/kg) into rats for three consecutive days significantly increased false positive scores, which were used to assess tinnitus behavior. When GJG was orally administered one hour after each salicylate injection, the increase in tinnitus behavior was suppressed. The analysis of c-Fos expression in auditory-related brain areas revealed that GJG significantly reduced the salicylate-induced increase in the number of c-Fos-expressing cells in the auditory cortices, inferior colliculus, and dorsal cochlear nucleus. These results suggest a suppressive effect of GJG on salicylate-induced tinnitus in animal models.博士(医学)・甲第851号・令和4年9月28日Copyright: © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Background: Vestibular compensation (VC) after unilateral labyrinthectomy (UL) consists of the initial and late processes. These processes can be evaluated based on the decline in the frequency of spontaneous nystagmus (SN) and the number of MK801-induced Fos-positive neurons in the contralateral medial vestibular nucleus (contra-MVe) in rats. Histamine H3 receptors (H3R) are reported to be involved in the development of VC. Objective: We examined the effects of betahistine, an H3R antagonist, on the initial and late processes of VC in UL rats. Methods: Betahistine dihydrochloride was continuously administered to the UL rats at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg/day using an osmotic minipump. MK801 (1.0 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered on days 7, 10, 12, and 14 after UL, while Fos-positive neurons were immunohistochemically stained in the contra-MVe. Results: The SN disappeared after 42 h, and continuous infusion of betahistine did not change the decline in the frequency of SN. The number of MK801-induced Fos-positive neurons in contra-MVe significantly decreased on days 7, 10, and 12 after UL in a dose-dependent manner in the betahistine-treated rats, more so than in the saline-treated rats. Conclusion: These findings suggest that betahistine facilitated the late, but not the initial, process of VC in UL rats

Post-operative infection of endoscopic submucosal dissection of early colorectal neoplasms: a case?controlled study using a Japanese database

What is known and objective Endoscopic submucosal dissection of early colorectal neoplasms (ESD-ECN) is known to be an operation with risk of contamination, possibly requiring pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis for the prevention of post-operative infection. However, an evaluation of the need for pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis for ESD-ECN has yet to be reported. The objective of this study was to determine whether pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis is associated with a reduced incidence of post-operative infection following ESD-ECN. Methods The present retrospective case-controlled study utilized a database built from the medical records of 14 university hospitals throughout Japan. Patients who were admitted and discharged from the hospital from April 2012 to October 2013 and who had undergone ESD-ECN were included in the study. Patients who had been undergone any other operation during their course of hospitalization, and patients who were prescribed antimicrobial agents for reasons other than post-operative infection or for prophylaxis were excluded. Characteristics of the study population, pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis and antimicrobial therapy for post-operative infection were investigated. In addition, we compared the characteristics of patients with post-operative infection (PI) and those with no post-operative infection (NPI). Univariate analyses were used to estimate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results and discussion We obtained the records of 522 patients who had undergone ESD-ECN from the database. After application of exclusion criteria, 421 patients were enrolled. The post-operative infection rate was 1・2%. Peritonitis was found most to be the most common post-operative infection (44%). Pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis was used for 314 patients (75%), with a median duration of 3・0 (range 1-11) days. Cefotiam was most frequently prescribed for pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis (56%). Antimicrobial therapies were started 1-10 days after ESD-ECN for a duration of 1-14 days. Pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis was not associated with post-operative infection rate, with an OR (95% CI) of 0・73 (0・08-6・61). However, digestive tract perforation was shown to be associated with post-operative infection and had an OR (95% CI) of 17・1 (1・66-176・45). What is new and conclusion Post-operative infection is an exceedingly rare event following ESD-ECN. Pre-operative antimicrobial prophylaxis had no significant effect on post-operative infection following ESD-ECN and thus may be unnecessary. Instead, prevention of digestive tract perforation may be more critical for the decrease in post-operative infections. Univariate analyses of PI vs. NPI
