    A Probabilistic Choice Model of Multiple Items Selection

    Conventional choice model of consumer behavior posits that buyers choose a single item or one brand at a time. However, there are many occasions that consumers pick up several items or a couple of brands at the same time to satisfy their own needs and/or to maximize their family\u27s utility. We can observe this kind of phenomena in the market of packaged consumer products such as tobacco, candy bar, beer, and soft drink. We construct a new probabilistic choice model of consumer behavior. In order to deal with such a situation that a consumer makes a simultaneous selection of multiple items from his consideration set of brands, we assume a two stage model of consumer choice behavior. At first stage, we suppose, a consumer makes a decision whether he buys a single brand or a mixed bundle of brands. Then he makes a decision of which brand (s) to be picked up and assigns the allocation number of multiple brands. We use a set of point-of-sale beer data scanned at a convenience store to estimate the model parameters. Our model is well fitted into the empirical data. Marketing implications and the possibilities of further extensions with our basic idea are provided

    Synthesis and optical properties of poly(phenylenethiophene)s bearing conjugated side chains

    A series of π-conjugated polymers bearing conjugated side chain were prepared by Migita–Kosugi–Stille coupling polycondensation reaction. The polymers consisting of phenylene–thiophene (CCPTO), phenylene–isothianaphthene (CCPIO), and phenylene-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (CCPEO) conjugated backbones in the main chains showed optical absorption peaks in the same region, while fluorescence peak of CCPTO was at larger wavelengths compared with those of CCPIO and CCPEO. The polymers showed optical rotary dispersion, indicating the optically active substituents induced one-handed helicity to the polymers

    The synthesis and properties of an isothianaphthene-based liquid crystal (LC) π-conjugated polymer are reported. The polymer showed amphotropic LC character having both thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystallinities with macroscopic LC fractal structure. The optical bandgap is 2.0 eV accompanied by good electroactivity

    A combination of biotechnological and electrochemical techniques is employed to synthesize an electroactive π-conjugated polymer. The monomer precursor bearing a hydroxyl group is obtained by the bioconversion of dibenzothiophene. An alkyl chain substituent is introduced by Williamson etherification with the aid of crown ether, and electrochemical polymerization is carried out by repeated potential scanning of the monomer in an electrolytic reaction solution. The polymer film thus prepared is shown to exhibit good electroactive characteristics

    Phenylene-thiophene-based liquid crystalline À-conjugated copolymers bearing mesogenic groups as side chains were synthesized via a Stille polycondensation reaction and confirmed to exhibit a nematic liquid crystal phase at appropriate temperatures. The formation of a nematic phase, but not a smectic phase indicates cooperation of the main chain and side chain in the formation of a nematic main-chain/side-chain liquid crystal phase. The generation of polarons in the main chain as charge carriers during in-situ vapor doping of iodine is confirmed to increase with a doping progresses, exhibiting Dysonian paramagnetic behavior typical of conductive polymers
