An edited translation of Kohara Hironobu’s 2000 revision of his study, ‘Joshi shin zukan’ 〈女史箴図巻〉, about the painting attributed to Gu Kaizhi (c. 344-c. 406) in the British Museum, originally published Kokka 《国華》 nos 908 (Nov 1967), 17-31 (part 1) & 909 (Dec 1967), 13-27 (part 2)

On the plasticity of Si-O framawork of alkali zinc silicates

The configuration of the Si-O framework in alkali zinc silicates has been investigated on the basis of recently determined structures. The results have shown that there is a linear correlation between the ionic radii of alkali ions and the molar abundance of ZnO+SiO2 per one alkali ion in the structure. This indicates that in the case of zinc silicates, the configuration of the Si-O frameworks is largely influenced by the ionic radii of alkali ions in the structure. On the contrary, in the case of alumino-silicates, the configuration of the Si-O framework is independent of ionic radii of alkali ions. In the former, the Si-O framework is considered to be plastic, while in the latter, it could be called rigid. The latter extreme cases are those of zeolites. In this case, the configuration on frameworks is not entirely influenced by the ionic radii of alkali atoms present. These results are discussed in connection with the historical investigations of silicate structures

Altruism and the Care of Elderly Parents: Evidence from Japanese Families

This paper analyzes what adult children would do for their parents were they frail and in need of long-term care. Focusing on the special case of parents' illness, the paper then investigates altruism in Japanese children. Descriptive statistics show that about 30% of adult children living separately from their parents provide long-term in-home care, which suggests that a significant number of Japanese children supply care. However, detailed examination reveals that this parental care is not motivated entirely by altruism. We show that children provide parental care when their parents are wealthy enough to meet the costs of nursing.

pp Elastic Scattering at LHC Energies

Using a unified analytic representation for the elastic scattering amplitudes of pp scattering valid for all energy region, the behavior of observables in the LHC collisions in the range s\sqrt{s}= 2.76 - 14 TeV is discussed. Similarly to the case of 7 TeV data, the proposed amplitudes give excellent description of the preliminary 8 TeV data. We discuss the expected energy dependence of the observable quantities, and present predictions for the experiments at 2.76, 13 and 14 TeV.Comment: 16 pages, 17 figure

Exact treatment of dispersion relations in pp and p\=p elastic scattering

    Get PDF
Based on a study of the properties of the Lerch's transcendent, exact closed forms of dispersion relations for amplitudes and for derivatives of amplitudes in pp and p\=p scattering are introduced. Exact and complete expressions are written for the real parts and for their derivatives at t=0t=0 based on given inputs for the energy dependence of the total cross sections and of the slopes of the imaginary parts. The results are prepared for application in the analysis of forward scattering data of the pp and p\=p systems at all energies, where exact and precise representations can be written.Comment: 23 pages, 1 figur
