Effect of the Strawberry Genotype, Cultivation and Processing on the Fra a 1 Allergen Content
Birch pollen allergic patients show cross-reactivity to vegetables and fruits, including
strawberries (Fragaria Ă— ananassa). The objective of this study was to quantify the level of the
Fra a 1 protein, a Bet v 1-homologous protein in strawberry fruits by a newly developed ELISA,
and determine the effect of genotype, cultivation and food processing on the allergen amount.
An indirect competitive ELISA using a specific polyclonal anti-Fra a 1.02 antibody was established
and revealed high variability in Fra a 1 levels within 20 different genotypes ranging from 0.67
to 3.97 ÎĽg/g fresh weight. Mature fruits of red-, white- and yellow-fruited strawberry cultivars
showed similar Fra a 1 concentrations. Compared to fresh strawberries, oven and solar-dried
fruits contained slightly lower levels due to thermal treatment during processing. SDS-PAGE and
Western blot analysis demonstrated degradation of recombinant Fra a 1.02 after prolonged (>10 min)
thermal treatment at 99 â—¦ C. In conclusion, the genotype strongly determined the Fra a 1 quantity
in strawberries and the color of the mature fruits does not relate to the amount of the PR10-protein.
Cultivation conditions (organic and conventional farming) do not affect the Fra a 1 level, and seasonal
effects were minor
Exchange parameters from approximate self-interaction correction scheme
The approximate atomic self-interaction corrections (ASIC) method to density
functional theory is put to the test by calculating the exchange interaction
for a number of prototypical materials, critical to local exchange and
correlation functionals. ASIC total energy calculations are mapped onto an
Heisenberg pair-wise interaction and the exchange constants J are compared to
those obtained with other methods. In general the ASIC scheme drastically
improves the bandstructure, which for almost all the cases investigated
resemble closely available photo-emission data. In contrast the results for the
exchange parameters are less satisfactory. Although ASIC performs reasonably
well for systems where the magnetism originates from half-filled bands, it
suffers from similar problems than those of LDA for other situations. In
particular the exchange constants are still overestimated. This reflects a
subtle interplay between exchange and correlation energy, not captured by the

Reduction of the nosocomial meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus incidence density by a region-wide search and follow-strategy in forty German hospitals of the EUREGIO, 2009 to 2011
Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) disseminates between hospitals serving one patient catchment area. Successful prevention and control requires concerted efforts and regional surveillance. Forty hospitals located in the German EUREGIO have established a network for combating MRSA. In 2007 they agreed upon a synchronised strategy for screening of risk patients and a standard for transmissionbased precautions (search and follow). The same year, the hospitals started synchronised MRSA prevention and annually reporting MRSA-data to the public health authorities. The median rate of screening cultures per 100 patients admitted increased from 4.38 in 2007 to 34.4 in 2011 (p<0.0001). Between 2007 and 2011, the overall incidence density of MRSA (0.87 MRSA cases/1,000 patient days vs 1.54; p<0.0001) increased significantly. In contrast, both the incidence density of nosocomial MRSA cases (0.13 nosocomial MRSA cases/1,000 patient days in 2009 vs 0.08 in 2011; p=0.0084) and the MRSA-days-associated nosocomial MRSA rate (5.51 nosocomial MRSA cases/1,000 MRSA days in 2009 vs 3.80 in 2011; p=0.0437) decreased significantly after the second year of the project. We documented adherence to the regional screening strategy resulting in improved detection of MRSA carriers at admission. Subsequently, after two years the nosocomial MRSA-incidence density was reduced. Regional surveillance data, annually provided as benchmarking to the regional hospitals and public health authorities, indicated successful prevention.</p
