Renormalization of the electron-phonon coupling in the one-band Hubbard model
We investigate the effect of electronic correlations on the coupling of
electrons to Holstein phonons in the one-band Hubbard model. We calculate the
static electron-phonon vertex within linear response of Kotliar-Ruckenstein
slave-bosons in the paramagnetic saddle-point approximation. Within this
approach the on-site Coulomb interaction U strongly suppresses the coupling to
Holstein phonons at low temperatures. Moreover the vertex function does not
show particularly strong forward scattering. Going to larger temperatures
kT\sim t we find that after an initial decrease with U, the electron-phonon
coupling starts to increase with U, confirming a recent result of Cerruti,
Cappelluti, and Pietronero. We show that this behavior is related to an unusual
reentrant behavior from a phase separated to a paramagnetic state upon
decreasing the temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Coupling to haloform molecules in intercalated C60?
For field-effect-doped fullerenes it was reported that the superconducting
transition temperature Tc is markedly larger for C60.2CHX_3 (X=Cl, Br)
crystals, than for pure C60. Initially this was explained by the expansion of
the volume per C60-molecule and the corresponding increase in the density of
states at the Fermi level in the intercalated crystals. On closer examination
it has, however, turned out to be unlikely that this is the mechanism behind
the increase in Tc. An alternative explanation of the enhanced transition
temperatures assumes that the conduction electrons not only couple to the
vibrational modes of the C60-molecule, but also to the modes of the
intercalated molecules. We investigate the possibility of such a coupling. We
find that, assuming the ideal bulk structure of the intercalated crystal, both
a coupling due to hybridization of the molecular levels, and a coupling via
dipole moments should be very small. This suggests that the presence of the
gate-oxide in the field-effect-devices strongly affects the structure of the
fullerene crystal at the interface.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to be published in PRB (rapid communication
On the vanishing viscosity limit in a disk
We say that the solution u to the Navier-Stokes equations converges to a
solution v to the Euler equations in the vanishing viscosity limit if u
converges to v in the energy norm uniformly over a finite time interval.
Working specifically in the unit disk, we show that a necessary and sufficient
condition for the vanishing viscosity limit to hold is the vanishing with the
viscosity of the time-space average of the energy of u in a boundary layer of
width proportional to the viscosity due to modes (eigenfunctions of the Stokes
operator) whose frequencies in the radial or the tangential direction lie
between L and M. Here, L must be of order less than 1/(viscosity) and M must be
of order greater than 1/(viscosity)
Nuclear Flow Excitation Function
We consider the dependence of collective flow on the nuclear surface
thickness in a Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck transport model of heavy ion
collisions. Well defined surfaces are introduced by giving test particles a
Gaussian density profile of constant width. Zeros of the flow excitation
function are as much influenced by the surface thickness as the nuclear
equation of state, and the dependence of this effect is understood in terms of
a simple potential scattering model. Realistic calculations must also take into
account medium effects for the nucleon--nucleon cross section, and impact
parameter averaging. We find that balance energy scales with the mass number as
, where has a numerical value between 0.35 and 0.5, depending on
the assumptions about the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section.Comment: 11 pages (LaTeX), 7 figures (not included), MSUCL-884, WSU-NP-93-
Non-BPS Dyons and Branes in the Dirac-Born-Infeld Theory
Non-BPS dyon solutions to D3-brane actions are constructed when one or more
scalar fields describing transverse fluctuations of the brane, are considered.
The picture emerging from such non-BPS configurations is analysed, in
particular the response of the D-brane-string system to small perturbations.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, Revtex fil
Giant Gravitons - with Strings Attached (III)
We develop techniques to compute the one-loop anomalous dimensions of
operators in the super Yang-Mills theory that are dual to open
strings ending on boundstates of sphere giant gravitons. Our results, which are
applicable to excitations involving an arbitrary number of open strings,
generalize the single string results of hep-th/0701067. The open strings we
consider carry angular momentum on an S embedded in the S of the
AdSS background. The problem of computing the one loop anomalous
dimensions is replaced with the problem of diagonalizing an interacting Cuntz
oscillator Hamiltonian. Our Cuntz oscillator dynamics illustrates how the
Chan-Paton factors for open strings propagating on multiple branes can arise
dynamically.Comment: 66 pages; v2: improved presentatio
Strange Particle Production at RHIC
We report STAR measurements of mid-rapidity yields for the ,
, , , , , and
particles in Cu+Cu and Au+Au GeV
collisions. We show that at a given number of participating nucleons, bulk
strangeness production is higher in Cu+Cu collisions compared to Au+Au
collisions at the same center of mass energy, counter to predictions from the
Canonical formalism. We compare both the Cu+Cu and Au+Au yields to AMPT and
EPOS predictions, and find they reproduce key qualitative aspects of the data.
Finally, we investigate other scaling parameters and find bulk strangeness
production for both the measured data and theoretical predictions, scales
better with the number participants that undergo more than one collision.Comment: Conference proceedings for Hot Quarks 2008, 5 pages and 4 figure
Momentum--dependent nuclear mean fields and collective flow in heavy ion collisions
We use the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model to simulate the dynamical
evolution of heavy ion collisions and to compare the effects of two
parametrizations of the momentum--dependent nuclear mean field that have
identical properties in cold nuclear matter. We compare with recent data on
nuclear flow, as characterized by transverse momentum distributions and flow
() variables for symmetric and asymmetric systems. We find that the precise
functional dependence of the nuclear mean field on the particle momentum is
important. With our approach, we also confirm that the difference between
symmetric and asymmetric systems can be used to pin down the density and
momentum dependence of the nuclear self consistent one--body potential,
independently. All the data can be reproduced very well with a
momentum--dependent interaction with compressibility K = 210 MeV.Comment: 15 pages in ReVTeX 3.0; 12 postscript figures uuencoded; McGill/94-1
Dilepton Production at SPS-energy Heavy Ion Collisions
The production of dileptons is studied within a hadronic transport model. We
investigate the sensitivity of the dilepton spectra to the initial
configuration of the hadronic phase in a ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision.
Possible in medium correction due to the modifications of pions and the pion
form factor in a hadronic gas are discussed.Comment: Dedicated to Gerry Brown in honor of the 32nd celebration of his 39th

Marginal deformation of N=4 SYM and Penrose limits with continuum spectrum
We study the Penrose limit about a null geodesic with 3 equal angular momenta
in the recently obtained type IIB solution dual to an exactly marginal
-deformation of N=4 SYM. The resulting background has non-trivial NS
3-form flux as well as RR 5- and 3-form fluxes. We quantise the light-cone
Green-Schwarz action and show that it exhibits a continuum spectrum. We show
that this is related to the dynamics of a charged particle moving in a Landau
plane with an extra interaction induced by the deformation. We interpret the
results in the dual N=1 SCFT.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures; v2: typos corrected, field theory interpretation
