The 3D abstract Tile Assembly Model is Intrinsically Universal
In this paper, we prove that the three-dimensional abstract Tile Assembly Model (3DaTAM) is intrinsically universal. This means that there is a universal tile set in the 3DaTAM which can be used to simulate any 3DaTAM system. This result adds to a body of work on the intrinsic universality of models of self-assembly, and is specifically motivated by a result in FOCS 2016 showing that any intrinsically universal tile set for the 2DaTAM requires nondeterminism (i.e. undirectedness) even when simulating directed systems. To prove our result we have not only designed, but also fully implemented what we believe to be the first intrinsically universal tile set which has been implemented and simulated in any tile assembly model, and have made it and a simulator which can display it freely available
Follow the Leader? Presidential Approval, Presidential Support, and Representatives\u27 Electoral Fortunes
While the link between presidential approval and congressional election outcomes is long established, scholars have generally ignored the role of a member’s own voting record in mediating these effects. If voters truly use the congressional ballot to express support or opposition toward the President, then they should not reward or punish all of his fellow partisans equally. Instead, the degree of reward or punishment meted out by voters ought to depend on the member’s level of support for the president’s legislative initiatives. Using data from the 1993, 1994, and 1996 National Election Studies, we demonstrate two key points: that representatives’ actual levels of support for the president are the single greatest predictor of their perceived levels of presidential support, and that perceived levels of presidential support interact powerfully with citizen presidential approval to shape attitudes toward congressional incumbents. These effects dwarf simple partisan heuristics in explaining congressional vote choice, suggesting that citizens are much more discriminating than is typically assumed in using the congressional vote as a referendum on presidential policy
Landslide Susceptibility Map of Johnson County, Kentucky
The purpose of this map is to identify landslide-prone areas in Johnson County in order to provide the public, as well as local and state government agencies, with information about where landslides are likely to occur. This map represents geomorphic-based susceptibility modeling that focuses on physical slope characteristics and morphology, the quality of which is dependent on data accuracy and resolution of terrain models. The availability of high-resolution (5-ft digital elevation model) lidar derived datasets allows for the generation of terrain elevation derivatives such as hillshades, slope, aspect, curvature, and roughness, as well as identification of existing landslide deposits. These high-resolution lidar derived datasets, coupled with landslide inventory mapping, enable us to produce detailed, high-resolution landslide susceptibility maps
Spin transfer switching of spin valve nanopillars using nanosecond pulsed currents
Spin valve nanopillars are reversed via the mechanism of spin momentum
transfer using current pulses applied perpendicular to the film plane of the
device. The applied pulses were varied in amplitude from 1.8 mA to 7.8 mA, and
varied in duration within the range of 100 ps to 200 ns. The probability of
device reversal is measured as a function of the pulse duration for each pulse
amplitude. The reciprocal pulse duration required for 95% reversal probability
is linearly related to the pulse current amplitude for currents exceeding 1.9
mA. For this device, 1.9 mA marks the crossover between dynamic reversal at
larger currents and reversal by thermal activation for smaller currents

Inverse temporal contributions of the dorsal hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex to the expression of long-term fear memories
Retrograde amnesia following disruptions of hippocampal function is often temporally graded, with recent memories being more impaired. Evidence supports the existence of one or more neocortical long-term memory storage/retrieval site(s). Neurotoxic lesions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) or the dorsal hippocampus (DH) were made 1 day or 200 days following trace fear conditioning. Recently encoded trace fear memories were most disrupted by DH lesions, while remotely encoded trace and contextual memories were most disrupted by mPFC lesions. These data strongly support the consolidation theory of hippocampus function and implicate the mPFC as a site of long-term memory storage/retrieval
