Variational discrete variable representation for excitons on a lattice
We construct numerical basis function sets on a lattice, whose spatial
extension is scalable from single lattice sites to the continuum limit. They
allow us to compute small and large bound states with comparable, moderate
effort. Adopting concepts of discrete variable representations, a diagonal form
of the potential term is achieved through a unitary transformation to Gaussian
quadrature points. Thereby the computational effort in three dimensions scales
as the fourth instead of the sixth power of the number of basis functions along
each axis, such that it is reduced by two orders of magnitude in realistic
examples. As an improvement over standard discrete variable representations,
our construction preserves the variational principle. It allows for the
calculation of binding energies, wave functions, and excitation spectra. We use
this technique to study central-cell corrections for excitons beyond the
continuum approximation. A discussion of the mass and spectrum of the yellow
exciton series in the cuprous oxide, which does not follow the hydrogenic
Rydberg series of Mott-Wannier excitons, is given on the basis of a simple

A limit on the detectability of the energy scale of inflation
We show that the polarization of the cosmic microwave background can be used
to detect gravity waves from inflation if the energy scale of inflation is
above 3.2 times 10^15 GeV. These gravity waves generate polarization patterns
with a curl, whereas (to first order in perturbation theory) density
perturbations do not. The limiting ``noise'' arises from the second--order
generation of curl from density perturbations, or rather residuals from its
subtraction. We calculate optimal sky coverage and detectability limits as a

Novel expression of Haemonchus contortus vaccine candidate aminopeptidase H11 using the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans
With the problem of parasitic nematode drug resistance increasing, vaccine development offers an alternative sustainable control approach. For some parasitic nematodes, native extracts enriched for specific proteins are highly protective. However, recombinant forms of these proteins have failed to replicate this protection. This is thought to be due to differences in glycosylation and/or conformation between native and recombinant proteins. We have exploited the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to examine its suitability as an alternative system for recombinant expression of parasitic nematode vaccine candidates. We focussed on Haemonchus contortus aminopeptidase H11 glycoprotein, which is enriched in a gut membrane fraction capable of inducing significant protection against this important ovine gastrointestinal nematode. We show that H. contortus H11 expressed in C. elegans is enzymatically active and MALDI mass spectrometry identifies similar di- and tri-fucosylated structures to those on native H11, with fucose at the 3- and/or 6-positions of the proximal GlcNAc. Some glycan structural differences were observed, such as lack of LDNF. Serum antibody to native H11 binds to C. elegans recombinant H11 and most of the antibody to rH11 or native H11 is directed to glycan moieties. Despite these similarities, no reduction in worm burden or faecal egg count was observed following immunisation of sheep with C. elegans-expressed recombinant H11 protein. The findings suggest that the di- and tri-fucosylated N-glycans expressed on rH11 do not contribute to the protective effect of H11 and that additional components present in native H11-enriched extract are likely required for enhancing the antibody response necessary for protection
Spirometry parameters used to define small airways obstruction in population-based studies: Systematic review
Background The assessment of small airways obstruction (SAO) using spirometry is practiced in population-based studies. However, it is not clear what are the most used parameters and cut-offs to define abnormal results. Methods We searched three databases (Medline, Web of Science, Google Scholar) for population-based studies, published by 1 May 2021, that used spirometry parameters to identify SAO and/or provided criteria for defining SAO. We systematically reviewed these studies and summarised evidence to determine the most widely used spirometry parameter and criteria for defining SAO. In addition, we extracted prevalence estimates and identified associated risk factors. To estimate a pooled prevalence of SAO, we conducted a meta-analysis and explored heterogeneity across studies using meta regression. Results Twenty-five studies used spirometry to identify SAO. The most widely utilised parameter (15 studies) was FEF25–75, either alone or in combination with other measurements. Ten studies provided criteria for the definition of SAO, of which percent predicted cut-offs were the most common (5 studies). However, there was no agreement on which cut-off value to use. Prevalence of SAO ranged from 7.5% to 45.9%. As a result of high heterogeneity across studies (I2 = 99.3%), explained by choice of spirometry parameter and WHO region, we do not present a pooled prevalence estimate. Conclusion There is a lack of consensus regarding the best spirometry parameter or defining criteria for identification of SAO. The value of continuing to measure SAO using spirometry is unclear without further research using large longitudinal data. PROSPERO registration number CRD4202125020
Supervisor Cultural Responsiveness and Unresponsiveness in Cross-Cultural Supervision
Thirteen supervisees’ of color and 13 European American supervisees’ experiences of culturally responsive and unresponsive cross-cultural supervision were studied using consensual qualitative research. In culturally responsive supervision, all supervisees felt supported for exploring cultural issues, which positively affected the supervisee, the supervision relationship, and client outcomes. In culturally unresponsive supervision, cultural issues were ignored, actively discounted, or dismissed by supervisors, which negatively affected the supervisee, the relationship, and/or client outcomes. European American supervisees’ and supervisees’ of color experiences diverged significantly, with supervisees of color experiencing unresponsiveness more frequently and with more negative effects than European American supervisees. Implications for research and supervision practice are discussed
On superconducting and magnetic properties of iron-oxypnictides
Pairing symmetry in oxypnictides, a new family of multiband high-Tc
superconductors, is partially imposed by the positions of multiple Fermi
pockets, which itself can give rise to new order parameters, such as s+,-
states or the state of dx^2-y^2 symmetry. Other pairing states may appear on
small pockets for long range interactions, but they are expected to be
sensitive to defects. We identify the competing antiferromagnetic order with
the triplet exciton transition in the semi- metallic background and discuss
whether its coexistence with superconductivity explains the doping dependence

Ab initio many-body calculation of excitons in solid Ne and Ar
Absorption spectra, exciton energy levels and wave functions for solid Ne and
Ar have been calculated from first principles using many-body techniques.
Electronic band structures of Ne and Ar were calculated using the GW
approximation. Exciton states were calculated by diagonalizing an exciton
Hamiltonian derived from the particle-hole Green function, whose equation of
motion is the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Singlet and triplet exciton series up to
n=5 for Ne and n=3 for Ar were obtained. Binding energies and
longitudinal-transverse splittings of n=1 excitons are in excellent agreement
with experiment. Plots of correlated electron-hole wave functions show that the
electron-hole complex is delocalised over roughly 7 a.u. in solid Ar.Comment: 6 page
Malaria vector control at crossroads: public health entomology and the drive to elimination
Vector control has been at the core of successful malaria control. However, a dearth of field-oriented vector biologists threatens to undermine global reductions in malaria burden. Skilled cadres are needed to manage insecticide resistance, to maintain coverage with current interventions, to develop new paradigms for tackling ‘residual' transmission, and to target interventions as transmission becomes increasingly heterogeneous. Recognising this human resource crisis, in September 2013, WHO Global Malaria Programme issued guidance for capacity building in entomology and vector control, including recommendations for countries and implementing partners. Ministries were urged to develop long-range strategic plans for building human resources for public health entomology and vector control (including skills in epidemiology, geographic information systems, operational research and programme management) and to set in place the requisite professional posts and career opportunities. Capacity building and national ownership in all partner projects and a clear exit strategy to sustain human and technical resources after project completion were emphasised. Implementing partners were urged to support global and regional efforts to enhance public health entomology capacity. While the challenges inherent in such capacity building are great, so too are the opportunities to establish the next generation of public health entomologists that will enable programmes to continue on the path to malaria eliminatio
