    Adolescent Positivity and Future Orientation, Parental Psychological Control, and Young Adult Internalising Behaviours during COVID-19 in Nine Countries

    The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted many young adults’ lives educationally, economically, and personally. This study investigated associations between COVID-19-related disruption and perception of increases in internalising symptoms among young adults and whether these associations were moderated by earlier measures of adolescent positivity and future orientation and parental psychological control. Participants included 1329 adolescents at Time 1, and 810 of those participants as young adults (M age = 20, 50.4% female) at Time 2 from 9 countries (China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States). Drawing from a larger longitudinal study of adolescent risk taking and young adult competence, this study controlled for earlier levels of internalising symptoms during adolescence in examining these associations. Higher levels of adolescent positivity and future orientation as well as parent psychological control during late adolescence helped protect young adults from sharper perceived increases in anxiety and depression during the first nine months of widespread pandemic lockdowns in all nine countries. Findings are discussed in terms of how families in the 21st century can foster greater resilience during and after adolescence when faced with community-wide stressors, and the results provide new information about how psychological control may play a protective role during times of significant community-wide threats to personal health and welfare

    Comparison of Short-Term Estrogenicity Tests for Identification of Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals

    The aim of this study was to compare results obtained by eight different short-term assays of estrogenlike actions of chemicals conducted in 10 different laboratories in five countries. Twenty chemicals were selected to represent direct-acting estrogens, compounds with estrogenic metabolites, estrogenic antagonists, and a known cytotoxic agent. Also included in the test panel were 17β-estradiol as a positive control and ethanol as solvent control. The test compounds were coded before distribution. Test methods included direct binding to the estrogen receptor (ER), proliferation of MCF-7 cells, transient reporter gene expression in MCF-7 cells, reporter gene expression in yeast strains stably transfected with the human ER and an estrogen-responsive reporter gene, and vitellogenin production in juvenile rainbow trout. 17β-Estradiol, 17α-ethynyl estradiol, and diethylstilbestrol induced a strong estrogenic response in all test systems. Colchicine caused cytotoxicity only. Bisphenol A induced an estrogenic response in all assays. The results obtained for the remaining test compounds—tamoxifen, ICI 182.780, testosterone, bisphenol A dimethacrylate, 4-n-octylphenol, 4-n-nonylphenol, nonylphenol dodecylethoxylate, butylbenzylphthalate, dibutylphthalate, methoxychlor, o,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDE, endosulfan, chlomequat chloride, and ethanol—varied among the assays. The results demonstrate that careful standardization is necessary to obtain a reasonable degree of reproducibility. Also, similar methods vary in their sensitivity to estrogenic compounds. Thus, short-term tests are useful for screening purposes, but the methods must be further validated by additional interlaboratory and interassay comparisons to document the reliability of the methods

    Leukotriene B4 receptors on neutrophils in patients with psoriasis and atopic exzema

    Polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) infiltration is an important characteristic in psoriatic lesions. Elevated concentrations of the chemoattractant eicosanoid leukotriene B4 (L TB4) are present in psoriatic skin. Its chemotactic activity is mediated via high affinity receptors on PMNL. The goal of our work was to ascertain whether PMNL infiltration in psoriasis can be accounted for by functional abnormalities of the circulating PMNL due to alterations in the LTB4 receptor density or affinity (or both). No significant difference was found between patients with psoriasis, healthy controls and patients with another inflammatory dermatosis (atopic eczema) with regard to the binding parameters of LTB4 receptors on PMNL. Our findings suggest that PMNL accumulation in psoriatic skin may be the result of an excess of cutaneous hemoattractant rather than the increased readiness of psoriatic PMNL to migrate towards L TB4 due to altered LTB4 receptor density or affinity

    European survey showed wide variations in diagnostic procedures and management strategies for metabolic bone disease of prematurity in 22 countries.

    AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical relevance, diagnostic procedures and treatment strategies for metabolic bone disease in preterm infants across Europe. METHODS An e-survey was distributed by email to 545 neonatal units in 38 European countries between July and October 2021. The protocol was based on the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys. RESULTS In total, 76 neonatal units (14%) from 22 European countries (58%) completed the e-survey. In the 12 months prior to the survey, 29% of 76 units reported at least one symptomatic case of fracture associated with metabolic bone disease of prematurity, and 18% of 76 units reported at least one case of craniofacial deformity. Most centres followed local guidelines for diagnosis (77% of 73 units) and treatment (63% of 72 units). Alkaline phosphatase was the blood marker most used for treatment indication (81% of 72 units), and phosphate supplementation was the treatment most used (82% of 71 units). CONCLUSION Metabolic bone disease of prematurity remains clinically relevant. Wide variations in diagnostic procedures and management strategies were observed in European neonatal units. Evidence-based consensus guidelines appear urgently needed to reduce the number of symptomatic cases

    On the formal verification of routing in material handling systems

    The correct design of complex material handling systems (MHS) is a challenging task, mainly because of short development cycles and ever increasing system sizes. For baggage handling systems (BHS) at airports, the correct design of routing strategies is of special importance, as these strategies are non-trivial but safety-critical. This paper presents a novel approach to prove the correctness of routing in MHS. The approach is based on assume-guarantee reasoning which allows to derive proofs of the overall system using a divide and conquer strategy. The proposed approach is automated and has been implemented in a tool. The application of the approach is shown using a real-world BHS

    Toward verification of material handling systems

    The correct designing of today's logistic systems has become an increasingly cumbersome process, especially due to their growing sizes and heterogeneities. While simulation methods provide a means to validate the functional behaviour of logistic systems, formal methods allow for proving that the system completely fulfills its specification. This paper presents a novel approach to the formal verification of material handling systems, which is based on setting up material handling system elements that are proven to be correct. The application of the approach is shown using an illustrative example
