Interaction of cyanine dyes with nucleic acids. I. Studies on monomethyne cyanine dyes as possible fluorescent probes for the detection of nucleic acids

    No full text
The series of monomethyne cyanine dyes as possible fluorescent probes for DNA and RNA analysis were synthesized and their optical properties were studied. Two dyes interacted with native DNA and RNA with strong fluorescence enhancement (up to 350 and 1550 times for Cyan 3 and Cyan 6, respectively). The complex of Cyan 4 with nucleic acids had extremely large Stokes shift (154 nm). Methylenoxybenzthiazole residue seems to be perspective structural fragment for the synthesis of new nucleic acid binding cyanine dyes. (Borel) convergence of the variationally improved mass expansion and the O(N) Gross-Neveu model mass gap

We reconsider in some detail a construction allowing (Borel) convergence of an alternative perturbative expansion, for specific physical quantities of asymptotically free models. The usual perturbative expansions (with an explicit mass dependence) are transmuted into expansions in 1/F, where F1/g(m)F \sim 1/g(m) for mΛm \gg \Lambda while F(m/Λ)αF \sim (m/\Lambda)^\alpha for m \lsim \Lambda, Λ\Lambda being the basic scale and α\alpha given by renormalization group coefficients. (Borel) convergence holds in a range of FF which corresponds to reach unambiguously the strong coupling infrared regime near m0m\to 0, which can define certain "non-perturbative" quantities, such as the mass gap, from a resummation of this alternative expansion. Convergence properties can be further improved, when combined with δ\delta expansion (variationally improved perturbation) methods. We illustrate these results by re-evaluating, from purely perturbative informations, the O(N) Gross-Neveu model mass gap, known for arbitrary NN from exact S matrix results. Comparing different levels of approximations that can be defined within our framework, we find reasonable agreement with the exact result.Comment: 33 pp., RevTeX4, 6 eps figures. The “Moscow as the third Rome” concept: Its Nature and Interpretations since the 19th to Early 21st Centuries

    No full text
The authors seek to identify the main specific features of the “Moscow as the Third Rome” concept (Philotheus) and its later interpretations, geopolitical as well, in modern Russia. The historical and interdisciplinary research conducted based on the source made it possible to propose a new vision of possible grounds for Russian foreign policy strategy. The “Third Rome” notion, from the perspective of its impact on Russian foreign policy and its geopolitical dimension, has been addressed in the works of many authors. It conveys both a historiosophic phenomenon, a national idea and the vision of a fair state. The concept, being in tune with the mood of Russian society, has had an impact on both the inner structure of the state and its foreign policy, which allows us to suggest that the concept of Moscow as the Third Rome may be considered Russia’s informal geopolitical doctrine. © 2018 Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Selenium in ischemic stroke

    No full text
Selenium plays a significant role in brain physiology, whereas data on the role of selenium in stroke pathophysiology are inconsistent. The objective of this chapter is to review current findings on the role of selenium in ischemic stroke. The existing human data demonstrate that stroke is associated with significantly reduced Se levels as well as glutathione peroxidase activity. Oppositely, we have revealed significantly higher serum Se levels in stroke, being inversely associated with brain damage markers. However, Se supplementation trials in stroke patients provided inconsistent results. Experimental studies provided a significant contribution to potential neuroprotective effects in stroke. Se supplementation was shown to increase antioxidant enzyme activity, thus reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and macromolecule oxidative damage. Se-induced prevention of mitochondrial dysfunction may also significantly contribute to reduced ROS production and restoration of ATP levels. Se exposure was also shown to prevent NF-kB and AP-1 activation, thus reducing proinflammatory cytokine production and leukocyte infiltration. Reduce caspase 3 activation and apoptosis, as well as decreased autophagy, were observed under ischemic conditions in Se-treated animals. Se may also reduce adhesion molecule expression, as well as glutamate excitotoxicity, although these effects were not demonstrated in stroke models. The existing data demonstrate the neuroprotective potential of selenium in ischemic stroke. However, the majority of indications of the neuroprotective effect of selenium arise from experimental studies, whereas human data remain insufficient. Further clinical studies and especially placebo-controlled trials are strongly required to highlight the potential effects of selenium supplements in ischemic stroke management. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018
