Giant supercurrent states in a superconductor-InAs/GaSb-superconductor junction

Superconductivity in topological materials has attracted a great deal of interest in both electron physics and material sciences since the theoretical predictions that Majorana fermions can be realized in topological superconductors [1-4]. Topological superconductivity could be realized in a type II, band-inverted, InAs/GaSb quantum well if it is in proximity to a conventional superconductor. Here we report observations of the proximity effect induced giant supercurrent states in an InAs/GaSb bilayer system that is sandwiched between two superconducting tantalum electrodes to form a superconductor-InAs/GaSb-superconductor junction. Electron transport results show that the supercurrent states can be preserved in a surprisingly large temperature-magnetic field (T-H) parameter space. In addition, the evolution of differential resistance in T and H reveals an interesting superconducting gap structure

Analysis and Measurement of coupling effects in the transfer line from PS to SPS for the LHC proton beam

    Get PDF
The tight emittance budget for injection into the LHC demands an accurate matching of the transfer line from the PS to the SPS to minimise blow-up at injection into the SPS. Precise two-dimensional beam profile measurements with Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) screens have recently pointed towards the presence of coupling in the LHC beam transfer. The new algorithms developed to analyse the profile data from the OTR screens and to quantify the observed coupling (in particular the determination of the complete 5?5 beam covariance matrix) are discussed. The results of the measurements and their dependence on the extraction conditions in the PS (trajectory and momentum) are presented and discussed in detail

Measurements of the SPS transverse impedance in 2000

We report on measurements of coherent tune shifts, head-tail growth rates, and current-dependent betatron phase advances at the CERN SPS in the year 2000. Comparing results obtained at two different energies shows that there is no notable contribution from space charge. Within the measurement resolution the impedance is the same as in 1999, consistent with the expected small effect from changes to ony a small number of pumping ports. In 2000, data were taken over an expanded range of chromaticities, which increases the sensitivity to the impedance frequency distribution. Measuremeents of the current-dependent phase advance around the ring help localizing the most important impedance sources

The commissioning of CMS sites: improving the site reliability

    Get PDF
The computing system of the CMS experiment works using distributed resources from more than 60 computing centres worldwide. These centres, located in Europe, America and Asia are interconnected by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid. The operation of the system requires a stable and reliable behaviour of the underlying infrastructure. CMS has established a procedure to extensively test all relevant aspects of a Grid site, such as the ability to efficiently use their network to transfer data, the functionality of all the site services relevant for CMS and the capability to sustain the various CMS computing workflows at the required scale. This contribution describes in detail the procedure to rate CMS sites depending on their performance, including the complete automation of the program, the description of monitoring tools, and its impact in improving the overall reliability of the Grid from the point of view of the CMS computing system

Immediate Memory and Electrophysiologic Effects of Prefrontal Cortex Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Neurotypical Individuals and Individuals with Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE/AIM: Memory impairment post-TBI is common, frequently persistent, and functionally debilitating. The purposes of this pilot study were to assess and to compare immediate behavioral auditory working memory and electrophysiologic effects of three different, randomized, conditions of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (LDLPFC) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to four neurotypical adults and four adults with chronic traumatic brain injury (TBI). MATERIALS/METHODS: Pre- and post- anodal, cathodal, and sham tDCS auditory memory performance, auditory event-related potentials (P300 amplitude and latency) and power of alpha and theta EEG bands were measured across individuals in each group. RESULTS: Post-anodal tDCS only, the neurotypical and TBI groups both demonstrated significantly improved immediate auditory memory function. Also post-anodal tDCS, the TBI group demonstrated significantly increased P300 amplitude versus post-sham tDCS. The neurotypical group demonstrated no pre- post tDCS electrophysiologic changes across conditions. CONCLUSIONS: These findings are consistent with findings of other studies of immediate tDCS effects on other types of memory in neurotypical individuals and in individuals with Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke and suggest that individuals with memory impairments second to chronic TBI may benefit from LDLPFC anodal tDCS. Pairing tDCS with traditional behavioral memory interventions may facilitate TBI rehabilitation outcomes and warrants continued investigation
