    The real exchange rate and foreign direct investment in the United States: relative wealth vs. relative wage effects

    There has been a significant correlation between inward foreign direct investment in the United States and the U.S. real exchange rate since the 1970s. Two alternative reasons for this relationship are that the real exchange rate affects the relative cost of production and that the real exchange rate alters reTative wealth across countries. In this paper we explore these alternatives by examining the determinants of four measures of inward foreign direct investment to the United States from seven industrial countries over the period 1979 to 1988. We find strong evidence that relative wealth significantly affects foreign direct investment in the United States. We find little evidence that relative wages have a significant impact on the determination of foreign direct investment in the United States. These results are robust to the choice of countries in our sample and when controlling for changes in tax codes.Investments, Foreign - United States ; Foreign exchange rates

    Differential Response of Alaska Peatlands to Climate Changes of the Last Millennium

    Northern peatlands in boreal and subarctic regions store about 500 Gt of carbon (C). Understanding the fate of this large C pool under a warmer climate is important, as temperatures in northern latitudes have increased quicker than the global averages over the past 100 years. Both regional climate (e.g., temperature and precipitation) and local factors (e.g., topography) influence peatland response to climate changes. To better understand peatland response to climate changes, paleoecological techniques were used to study the C accumulation and paleohydrololgy of peatlands in different Alaskan climate regions. In addition, local-scale factors were studied through comparison of two nearby peatlands in different surficial geologic settings within the Southcentral Alaska climate region. Peatland responses to relatively well-documented climate changes over the last 1100 years, such as the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) at ~1000-600 and Little Ice Age (LIA) at ~600-200 cal yr BP, were analyzed. Regional-scale results indicate that peatlands in relatively warmer and wetter Southeast Alaska accumulated the most peat over the last millennium. Average apparent peatland C accumulation rates in all regions were greatest during the warmer MCA than the cooler LIA, suggesting a possible negative C cycle feedback to climate change because peatlands may sequestrate more atmospheric C under a warmer climate, reducing the greenhouse effect. However, results also indicate that local-scale factors, like surficial geology, can lead to a heterogeneous response of peatlands to climate change, even within the same region, which has important implications for C cycling and peat-based paleoclimate studies. A better understanding of local-scale controls is necessary to help account for some of the unexplained variability present in studies of northern peatland response to climate changes

    Impact of Meat Consumption, Preparation, and Mutagens on Aggressive Prostate Cancer

    The association between meat consumption and prostate cancer remains unclear, perhaps reflecting heterogeneity in the types of tumors studied and the method of meat preparation—which can impact the production of carcinogens.We address both issues in this case-control study focused on aggressive prostate cancer (470 cases and 512 controls), where men reported not only their meat intake but also their meat preparation and doneness level on a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire. Associations between overall and grilled meat consumption, doneness level, ensuing carcinogens and aggressive prostate cancer were assessed using multivariate logistic regression.Higher consumption of any ground beef or processed meats were positively associated with aggressive prostate cancer, with ground beef showing the strongest association (OR = 2.30, 95% CI:1.39–3.81; P-trend = 0.002). This association primarily reflected intake of grilled or barbequed meat, with more well-done meat conferring a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Comparing high and low consumptions of well/very well cooked ground beef to no consumption gave OR's of 2.04 (95% CI:1.41–2.96) and 1.51 (95% CI:1.06–2.14), respectively. In contrast, consumption of rare/medium cooked ground beef was not associated with aggressive prostate cancer. Looking at meat mutagens produced by cooking at high temperatures, we detected an increased risk with 2-amino-3,8-Dimethylimidazo-[4,5-f]Quinolaxine (MelQx) and 2-amino-3,4,8-trimethylimidazo(4,5-f)qunioxaline (DiMelQx), when comparing the highest to lowest quartiles of intake: OR = 1.69 (95% CI:1.08–2.64;P-trend = 0.02) and OR = 1.53 (95% CI:1.00–2.35; P-trend = 0.005), respectively.Higher intake of well-done grilled or barbequed red meat and ensuing carcinogens could increase the risk of aggressive prostate cancer

    Strongly correlated quantum dots in weak confinement potentials and magnetic fields

    We explore a strongly correlated quantum dot in the presence of a weak confinement potential and a weak magnetic field. Our exact diagonalization studies show that the groundstate property of such a quantum dot is rather sensitive to the magnetic field and the strength of the confinement potential. We have determined rich phase diagrams of these quantum dots. Some experimental consequences of the obtained phase diagrams are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, new and updated figure

    Total knee arthroplasty using computer-assisted navigation in patients with deformities of the femur and tibia: A report of 5 cases

    Anatomic aberrations of the femur and tibia secondary to trauma, congenital defects, and prior surgery present challenges for the reconstructive knee surgeon because of an altered mechanical axis and distorted anatomic landmarks. Five patients with arthritis of the knee and extra-articular femoral and/or tibial deformity, retained hardware, or intramedullary (IM) implants underwent total knee arthroplasty using a computer navigation system. The navigation system obviated the need for an IM guide, and the normal mechanical axis of the patients was restored. Extensive dissection for hardware removal or osteotomy was not necessary in these patients. In these 5 cases, a navigation system proved to be an effective tool for restoration of limb alignment in the presence of significant extra-articular deformities and/or IM hardware. Thus, it provides an alternative approach to the traditional IM instrumentation for treating these patients in an effective manner

    Correlation effects in a quantum dot at high magnetic fields

    We investigate the effects of electron correlations on the ground state energy and the chemical potential of a droplet confined by a parabolic potential at high magnetic fields.
