The VISTA spacecraft: Advantages of ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion) for interplanetary fusions propulsion applications
Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) is an attractive engine power source for interplanetary manned spacecraft, especially for near-term missions requiring minimum flight duration, because ICF has inherent high power-to-mass ratios and high specific impulses. We have developed a new vehicle concept called VISTA that uses ICF and is capable of round-trip manned missions to Mars in 100 days using A.D. 2020 technology. We describe VISTA's engine operation, discuss associated plasma issues, and describe the advantages of DT fuel for near-term applications. Although ICF is potentially superior to non-fusion technologies for near-term interplanetary transport, the performance capabilities of VISTA cannot be meaningfully compared with those of magnetic-fusion systems because of the lack of a comparable study of the magnetic-fusion systems. Animal bite infections.
Animal bites have become alarmingly common and may represent a quiet epidemic. It is estimated that between 1 and 3.5 million animal bites occur annually in the United States. The highest incidence has consistently been in 5-to-14-year-old schoolchildren, who have greater contact with animals, especially house pets, on a daily basis. Ochrobactrum anthropi bacteremia in a child.
Children undergoing chemotherapy for cancer are at increased risk of supervening infection, including bacteremia. This may be due to immunosuppression as well as the presence of intravascular devices such as central venous catheters. Bacteria responsible for these infections include those found in the child\u27s endogenous flora as well as in environmental sources. We report the case of a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed bacteremia secondary to Ochrobactrum anthropi. Details of this extremely rare infection are the focus of this report
A clustering of childhood meningococcal disease: a challenge for physicians, press and community.
The Delaware Division of Public Health reported only two cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population in 1992. As of March 1, 1993, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicated only one case of meningococcal disease in the state of Delaware for 1993. However, from the end of February to early April 1993, approximately six weeks, there were seven cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population that either presented or were transferred to one of the pediatric care facilities in the Wilmington, Delaware area. Notification of these cases to the Delaware Division of Public Health prompted the dispersion of a statewide letter concerning the recognition of the clinical signs of meningitis and the proper prophylaxis for meningococcal exposure
Childhood typhoid fever diagnosed in an urban U.S. setting.
The majority of cases of childhood typhoid fever diagnosed in the United States occur in persons recently returned from travel abroad. We report two childhood cases of typhoid fever acquired in Mexico and India and diagnosed in an urban United States setting. This report describes these cases and provides insights into the pitfalls in recognizing this condition in a nonendemic setting as well as information concerning differential diagnosis and treatment

Electromagnetic response of a static vortex line in a type-II superconductor : a microscopic study
The electromagnetic response of a pinned Abrikosov fluxoid is examined in the
framework of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. The matrix elements and the
selection rules for both the single photon (emission - absorption) and two
photon (Raman scattering) processes are obtained. The results reveal striking
asymmetries: light absorption by quasiparticle pair creation or single
quasiparticle scattering can occur only if the handedness of the incident
radiation is opposite to that of the vortex core states. We show how these
effects will lead to nonreciprocal circular birefringence, and also predict
structure in the frequency dependence of conductivity and in the differential

A Standardized Patient Counseling Rubric for a Pharmaceutical Care and Communications Course
Objective. To restructure a required pharmaceutical care and communications course to place greater emphasis on communication skills and include a high-stakes assessment.
Design. A standardized counseling rubric was developed for use throughout the pharmacy curriculum and the counseling laboratory practicals were changed to high-stakes assessments.
Assessment. An annual mid-semester and end-of-semester high-stakes patient-counseling objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) conducted prior to and after revision of the course and counseling rubric documented improvements in students’ scores. Performance on the post-course annual assessment patient counseling OSCE improved compared to that on the pre-course (p,0.001).
Conclusion. The 2010 course revision improved students’ medication counseling abilities and readiness to practice. Major course revisions should be undertaken only after input from all stakeholders and with data to support the need for change

Mechanical design and development of TES bolometer detector arrays for the Advanced ACTPol experiment
The next generation Advanced ACTPol (AdvACT) experiment is currently underway
and will consist of four Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometer arrays, with
three operating together, totaling ~5800 detectors on the sky. Building on
experience gained with the ACTPol detector arrays, AdvACT will utilize various
new technologies, including 150mm detector wafers equipped with multichroic
pixels, allowing for a more densely packed focal plane. Each set of detectors
includes a feedhorn array of stacked silicon wafers which form a spline profile
leading to each pixel. This is then followed by a waveguide interface plate,
detector wafer, back short cavity plate, and backshort cap. Each array is
housed in a custom designed structure manufactured from high purity copper and
then gold plated. In addition to the detector array assembly, the array package
also encloses cryogenic readout electronics. We present the full mechanical
design of the AdvACT high frequency (HF) detector array package along with a
detailed look at the detector array stack assemblies. This experiment will also
make use of extensive hardware and software previously developed for ACT, which
will be modified to incorporate the new AdvACT instruments. Therefore, we
discuss the integration of all AdvACT arrays with pre-existing ACTPol
