Fast, Multicore-Scalable, Low-Fragmentation Memory Allocation through Large Virtual Memory and Global Data Structures
We demonstrate that general-purpose memory allocation involving many threads
on many cores can be done with high performance, multicore scalability, and low
memory consumption. For this purpose, we have designed and implemented scalloc,
a concurrent allocator that generally performs and scales in our experiments
better than other allocators while using less memory, and is still competitive
otherwise. The main ideas behind the design of scalloc are: uniform treatment
of small and big objects through so-called virtual spans, efficiently and
effectively reclaiming free memory through fast and scalable global data
structures, and constant-time (modulo synchronization) allocation and
deallocation operations that trade off memory reuse and spatial locality
without being subject to false sharing
From Poincare to affine invariance: How does the Dirac equation generalize?
A generalization of the Dirac equation to the case of affine symmetry, with
SL(4,R) replacing SO(1,3), is considered. A detailed analysis of a Dirac-type
Poincare-covariant equation for any spin j is carried out, and the related
general interlocking scheme fulfilling all physical requirements is
established. Embedding of the corresponding Lorentz fields into
infinite-component SL(4,R) fermionic fields, the constraints on the SL(4,R)
vector-operator generalizing Dirac's gamma matrices, as well as the minimal
coupling to (Metric-)Affine gravity are studied. Finally, a symmetry breaking
scenario for SA(4,R) is presented which preserves the Poincare symmetry.Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX2e, 8 figures, revised introduction, typos correcte
A combination of friedel-crafts and lawesson reactions to 5-substituted-2,2´-bithiophenes
Gama-Keto esters (2) derivatives of thiophene were obtained from hemi-succinic esters and transformed to the corresponding amides (4). Lawesson´s treatment of 2 and 4 gave the corresponding bithiophenes (5) with alkoxy or amino substituents.Fundação para a Ci~Encia e Tecnologia.

Flow tracing fidelity of scattering aerosol in laser Doppler velocimetry
An experimental method for determinating the flow tracing fidelity of a scattering aerosol used in laser Doppler velocimeters was developed with particular reference to the subsonic turbulence measurements. The method employs the measurement of the dynamic response of a flow seeding aerosol excited by acoustic waves. The amplitude and frequency of excitation were controlled to simulate the corresponding values of fluid turbulence components. Experimental results are presented on the dynamic response of aerosols over the size range from 0.1 to 2.0 microns in diameter and over the frequency range 100 Hz to 100 kHz. It was observed that unit density spherical scatterers with diameters of 0.2 microns followed subsonic air turbulence frequency components up to 100 kHz with 98 percent fidelity
Formylation, dicyanovinylation and tricyanovinylation on 5-alkoxy- and 5-amino-substituted-2,2´-bithiophenes
Several donor-acceptor-substituted bithiophenes were synthesized by functionalization of the corresponding 5-alkoxy- or 5-aminobithiophenes 1 by different methods: Vilsmeier formylation, metalation followed by reaction with DMF, direct tricyanovinylation reaction using TCNE or Knoevenagel condensation starting from the corresponding 5-formyl- derivatives of 1.ICCTI/French Embassy (Technical and Scientific Cooperation Programme).
