A System for Assessing the Knowledge and Skills of Students in Computer Programming

This article presents the author’s experience in teaching programming to university students in first and second year. The system for assessing the knowledge and skills of students is an essential part of teaching. It aims not only to assess students, but also to help improving their knowledge. The importance and difficulty of Computer Programming requires specific and unconventional approach to this activity. The article discusses all three elements of ongoing assessment (tests for knowledge, homeworks, and practical programming skills), as well as the rules for final exams and final assessment

Bulgarian Folk Songs in a Digital Library

The paper presents the main results of an ongoing project aimed at the development of technologies for digitization of Bulgarian folk music and building a heterogeneous digital library with Bulgarian folk songs presented with their music, notes and text. An initial digitization and preservation of the Bulgarian cultural heritage starts by means of digitization and insertion into the library of over 1000 songs that were recorded and written down during the 60s and 70s of XX century. Also we present a full text search engine in a collection of lyrics (text of songs) and coded notes (symbolic melody). Some perspectives for future projects are also discussed

Information Technology for Preserving the Bulgarian Folklore Heritage

Folk songs are an important and essential part of the Bulgarian cultural heritage. Following the traditions of the 20th century in publishing Bulgarian folk songs, we prepared the book “Folk Songs from Thrace” [3] with scores and lyrics recorded from original performances in the 60s and 80s of the last century. We created a digital library of over 1200 songs, which provides access to songs via full-text search engine. The data sources are stored using advanced information technology to encode texts, notes and sound. Traditional indexes and bookmarks for the book are also developed using our software

Numerical Solutions of ODEs using Volterra Series

We propose a numerical approach for solving systems of nonautonomous ordinary di®erential equations under suitable assumptions. This approach is based on expansion of the solutions by Volterra series and allows to estimate the accuracy of the approximation. Also we can solve some ordinary di®erential equations for which the classical numerical methods fail

A Digital Library of Folklore Songs and Keyword-Based Search Engine

Digitization of Bulgarian folk songs with music, notes and text

A digitization project for Bulgarian folk songs Information technologies for presentation of Bulgarian folk songs with music, notes and text in a digital library has been started last year, joining the efforts of various experts from three institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia University and New Bulgarian University. The research that is carried out under this project aims at the development of a technology and corresponding supporting software tools for the creation and usage of heterogeneous institutional digital libraries. The tools will satisfy the needs of the researchers for information technologies in the fields of ethnology, ethnomusicology and folkloristic. In the project frame a technological environment for digitization of notations is created, specially adapted for Bulgarian folk songs. Now a database with notes, lyrics and music is under development. An initial digitization and preservation of the Bulgarian cultural heritage will be carried out by means of digitization and insertion into the system of over 1000 songs that were recorded and written down during the 60s and 70s of XX century

A test system for checking and evaluation the students’ programming knowledge

The article describes the preparation and implementation of multiple-choice type tests for checking the students’ knowledge of programming. Justification of the chosen approach, methodology and technical details are discussed. Software for generating tests and analysing of results is proposed

A software tool for searching in binary text images

In this paper we present a software tool for searching word images in scanned text documents. We consider that the document pages are represented as files in tif, jpg, gif, png, bmp and other graphic file formats. Our experiments prove the efficiency of the proposed approach and show that such type of searching can be successful. Examples of using various languages are presented. Our software is user oriented and can be applied to any collection of scanned documents

Astroinformatics and digitization of astronomical heritage
