    Molecular line opacity of LiCl in the mid-infrared spectra of brown dwarfs

    We present a complete line list for the X 1Sigma+ electronic ground state of LiCl computed using fully quantum-mechanical techniques. This list includes transition energies and oscillator strengths in the spectral region 0.3-39,640.7 cm-1 for all allowed rovibrational transitions in absorption within the electronic ground state. The calculations were performed using an accurate hybrid potential constructed from a spectral inversion fit of experimental data and from recent multi-reference single- and double-excitation configuration interaction calculations. The line list was incorporated into the stellar atmosphere code PHOENIX to compute spectra for a range of young to old T dwarf models. The possibility of observing a signature of LiCl in absorption near 15.8 microns is addressed and the proposal to use this feature to estimate the total lithium elemental abundance for these cool objects is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 1 table.     Non semi-simple sl(2) quantum invariants, spin case

    Invariants of 3-manifolds from a non semi-simple category of modules over a version of quantum sl(2) were obtained by the last three authors in [arXiv:1404.7289]. In their construction the quantum parameter qq is a root of unity of order 2r2r where r>1r>1 is odd or congruent to 22 modulo 44. In this paper we consider the remaining cases where rr is congruent to zero modulo 44 and produce invariants of 33-manifolds with colored links, equipped with generalized spin structure. For a given 33-manifold MM, the relevant generalized spin structures are (non canonically) parametrized by H1(M;C/2Z)H^1(M;\mathbb C/2\mathbb Z).Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure

    An effective elastic thickness map of Australia from wavelet transforms of gravity and topography using Forsyth's method

    We have developed a wavelet version of Forsyth's coherence method for estimating the effective elasticthickness (T e) of the lithosphere from gravity and topography. We have previously shown that the 'fan' wavelet is particularly well suited to making localised coherence estimates and here we progress the method by showing how the coherence can be modelled by using the wavelet transforms of gravity and topography to infer the initial loads that flex the plate. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on synthetic data from a model having a rectangular area of large T e embedded in a uniform low T e surrounding, and a load ratio that increases with wave number. The results for the Australia region show a 'core' of high T e under north and central Australia, with much lower values to the east and also, unexpectedly, under the western parts of the Yilgarn and Pilbara cratons

    Absorption spectrum in the wings of the potassium second resonance doublet broadened by helium

    We have measured the reduced absorption coefficients occurring in the wings of the potassium 4S-5P doublet lines at 404.414 nm and at 404.720 nm broadened by helium gas at pressures of several hundred Torr. At the experimental temperature of 900 K, we have detected a shoulder-like broadening feature on the blue wing of the doublet which is relatively flat between 401.8 nm and 402.8 nm and which drops off rapidly for shorter wavelengths, corresponding to absorption from the X doublet Sigma+ state to the C doublet Sigma+ state of the K-He quasimolecule. The accurate measurements of the line profiles in the present work will sharply constrain future calculations of potential energy surfaces and transition dipole moments correlating to the asymptotes He-K(5p), He-K(5s), and He-K(3d).Comment: 2 figure

    Lateral migration of large sedimentary bodies in a deep-marine system offshore of Argentina

    Abstract Contourite features are increasingly identified in seismic data, but the mechanisms controlling their evolution remain poorly understood. Using 2D multichannel reflection seismic and well data, this study describes large Oligocene- to middle Miocene-aged sedimentary bodies that show prominent lateral migration along the base of the Argentine slope. These form part of a contourite depositional system with four morphological elements: a plastered drift, a contourite channel, an asymmetric mounded drift, and an erosive surface. The features appear within four seismic units (SU1–SU4) bounded by discontinuities. Their sedimentary stacking patterns indicate three evolutionary stages: an onset stage (I) (~ 34–25 Ma), a growth stage (II) (~ 25–14 Ma), and (III) a burial stage (< 14 Ma). The system reveals that lateral migration of large sedimentary bodies is not only confined to shallow or littoral marine environments and demonstrates how bottom currents and secondary oceanographic processes influence contourite morphologies. Two cores of a single water mass, in this case, the Antarctic Bottom Water and its upper interface, may drive upslope migration of asymmetric mounded drifts. Seismic images also show evidence of recirculating bottom currents which have modulated the system’s evolution. Elucidation of these novel processes will enhance basin analysis and palaeoceanographic reconstructions
