The study of greening shotcrete considered the landscape

    Get PDF
This study concerns the protection method and the natural maintenance of aging shotcrete. In Japan, in the high economic growth period in 1960’s, a great number of slopes were formed to construct many roads and most slope protection methods were to cover shotcrete on the slope. In recent years, with concerns about the environmental and landscape, the construction of shotcrete is decreasing. However, even now about 7,000,000㎡of shotcrete is laid every year, and it is predicted that the total amount of shotcrete is enormous. Now, about 60 years passes after a great number of shotcrete was laid, and shotcrete have been aging. Therefore, we suggested the method which construct for directly aging shotcrete in the protection method and the greening protection method is considering cost and risk with new construction. We adopt the protection method by rock bolt and rope net. In this study, at first, we establish the vegetation base suitable for growth of plants which can be use together with the protection method. And then, we install many kind of the vegetation base that gave the vegetation on a model shotcrete. Finally, we compared the rates of water retention and vegetation growth

Subconjunctival orbital fat herniation mimicking lipomatous tumors

Subconjunctival fat herniation is rarely described in the literature, but it is common in clinical practice. It represents prolapse of the intraconal fat to the subconjunctiva, mainly from aging. It usually occurs in the superotemporal quadrant of the globe, and rarely causes symptoms. Microscopically, multinucleated giant cells that frequently have a floret-like appearance (floretlike cells), and also bizarre adipocytes with nuclear vacuoles (Lochkern cells) are seen. We present a case of a 68-year-old Japanese man with subconjunctival fat herniation that showed floret-like cells and Lochkern cells. The differential diagnosis included lipomatous tumors of the orbit such as pleomorphic lipoma, liposarcoma, as these resemble subconjunctival fat herniation macroscopically. It is important to make a histopathological diagnosis for fat herniation to avoid overlooking malignant tumors and over-treating benign lesions

Appearance of ferromagnetism in Pt(100) ultrathin films originated from quantum-well states with possibility of small orbital magnetic moment

Ferromagnetism was observed in a Pt(100) ultrathin film deposited on a SrTiO3(100) substrate. The ferromagnetism, which appears in films with thicknesses of 2.2-4.4 nm, periodically changes with a period of approximately 1 nm (5-6 ML) depending on the film thickness. This is consistent with the period derived from the quantum-well states formed in the thin film. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements were conducted to understand the intrinsic nature of the ferromagnetism in the Pt(100) ultrathin films, and contrary to our expectations, the orbital magnetic moment of pure Pt is much smaller than that of the Pt/ferromagnetic multilayer system. These results suggest that the origin of the large magnetic anisotropy in Pt components cannot be explained only by the amount of spin-orbit coupling in Pt.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Recent global movement on mental health

The Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) is a planned action that aims at providing uniform medical care, especially mental health care and services, to all people worldwide, regardless of economic status. Because not only the levels of medical care, but also the political and economic situations vary among countries, it is extremely difficult for a plan to be successfully implemented in every country with standardized methodology, even if the directionality is ethically correct and ideal. Against this background, authorized personnel provide mental health care activities across the globe, and they report on activities and promote mutual understanding at the WHO mhGAP Forum, an informal meeting convened yearly in Geneva. The 5th mhGAP meeting was attended by 48 member states and 58 partner organizations. From Japan, 5 professionals attended the meeting and presented different viewpoints. Among various policies proposed at the Forum, one in particular about training and recruiting health professionals for low-income countries has gained a special consensus. In addition, the importance of training medical professionals who are not specialized in psychiatry and the importance of developing educational programs for educators were emphasized. It is important for Japan to proactively participate in mhGAP to contribute to global mental health initiative

Abstract

Background

Xanthogranuloma of the stomach is an extremely rare disease, and this lesion has only been found to coexist with early gastric cancer in 2 cases in the literature.

Case presentation

We report a case of xanthogranuloma of the stomach combined with early gastric cancer that mimicked an advanced stage tumor. A 65-year-old female was referred to our hospital because of epigastralgia. During a physical examination, a defined abdominal mass was palpable in the region of the left hypochondrium. Imaging studies revealed an advanced gastric cancer, which was suspected of having infiltrated the abdominal wall. Total gastrectomy and resection of the regional lymph node and abdominal wall were performed. Histopathologic examination of the resected specimen demonstrated xanthogranuloma combined with early gastric cancer.

Conclusion

Xanthogranuloma presenting as a form of SMT (submucosal tumor) of the stomach is an extremely rare disease, and diagnosing it preoperatively is difficult. Further accumulation and investigation of this entity is necessary.</p

A visible colorimetric sensing device for determination of selenium(VI) is proposed. This method is simply measuring the fluorinated coloration length of a microcolumn to determination Se(IV). The extension of the length of color band was generated by accumulation of a fluorescence reactant (Se-DAN) between Se(VI) and diaminonaphtalene (DAN) on an adsorbent in a micorcolomn. Modification with β-cyclodextrin on octadecyl functional groups (C18)-modified beads as adsorbent of Se-DAN enhanced the florescence. A detection limit of 30 μg L-1 for Se with a linear range up to 150 μg L-1 was obtained. The determination scheme was successfully applied to the analysis of a sample of tap water
