High temperature refractory member with radiation emissive overcoat
A radiation type heat dissipator for use in a plasma engine is formed of a refractory metal layer upon which there is deposited a radiation emissive coating made of a high emissivity material such as zirconium diboride. The radiation emissive coating has a surface emissivity coefficient substantially greater than the emissivity coefficient of the refractory metal and thereby enhances the optical radiating efficiency of the heat dissipator
Thermal design improvements for 30kWe arcjet engine
Two thermal design improvements for 30 kWe arcjet engines are described. A ZrB2 high temperature coating was used to increase the surface emissivity of the nozzle radiating surface, enabling lower temperature operation, which should lead to longer nozzle life. The ZrB2-coated engine operated 120 C cooler than the uncoated baseline engine indicating a 30 percent increase in the surface emissivity. An engine design which has fewer active seals than previous designs and operates at lower overall component temperatures is described. The nozzle on the engine operated at 1950 C at 30 kWe while the baseline engine nozzle reached 2000 C at 23 kWe. The back of the engine was more than a factor of two cooler when compared to the baseline engine
Developments in the High Precision Control of Magnet Currents for LHC
The LHC will require over 1700 magnet power converters, some of which will need an unprecedented precision of about 1 ppm (of 13 kA). This paper presents the approach taken, prototype methods, initial results and charts future design directions. These results confirm that such performance can be obtained reliably and at a reduced cost compared to conventional methods. Developments of a real-time controls infrastructure needed to support on-line beam feedback are outlined

Heating of trapped ions from the quantum ground state
We have investigated motional heating of laser-cooled 9Be+ ions held in
radio-frequency (Paul) traps. We have measured heating rates in a variety of
traps with different geometries, electrode materials, and characteristic sizes.
The results show that heating is due to electric-field noise from the trap
electrodes which exerts a stochastic fluctuating force on the ion. The scaling
of the heating rate with trap size is much stronger than that expected from a
spatially uniform noise source on the electrodes (such as Johnson noise from
external circuits), indicating that a microscopic uncorrelated noise source on
the electrodes (such as fluctuating patch-potential fields) is a more likely

The Quantum-Mechanical Position Operator in Extended Systems
The position operator (defined within the Schroedinger representation in the
standard way) becomes meaningless when periodic boundary conditions are adopted
for the wavefunction, as usual in condensed matter physics. We show how to
define the position expectation value by means of a simple many-body operator
acting on the wavefunction of the extended system. The relationships of the
present findings to the Berry-phase theory of polarization are discussed.Comment: Four pages in RevTe
Electron Conditioning of Technical Aluminium Surfaces: Effect on the Secondary Electron Yield
The effect of electron conditioning on commercially aluminium alloys 1100 and
6063 were investigated. Contrary to the assumption that electron conditioning,
if performed long enough, can reduce and stabilize the SEY to low values (, value of many pure elements), the SEY of aluminium did not go lower than

ArachnoServer 2.0, an updated online resource for spider toxin sequences and structures
ArachnoServer (www.arachnoserver.org) is a manually curated database providing information on the sequence, structure and biological activity of protein toxins from spider venoms. These proteins are of interest to a wide range of biologists due to their diverse applications in medicine, neuroscience, pharmacology, drug discovery and agriculture. ArachnoServer currently manages 1078 protein sequences, 759 nucleic acid sequences and 56 protein structures. Key features of ArachnoServer include a molecular target ontology designed specifically for venom toxins, current and historic taxonomic information and a powerful advanced search interface. The following significant improvements have been implemented in version 2.0: (i) the average and monoisotopic molecular masses of both the reduced and oxidized form of each mature toxin are provided; (ii) the advanced search feature now enables searches on the basis of toxin mass, external database accession numbers and publication date in ArachnoServer; (iii) toxins can now be browsed on the basis of their phyletic specificity; (iv) rapid BLAST searches based on the mature toxin sequence can be performed directly from the toxin card; (v) private silos can be requested from research groups engaged in venoms-based research, enabling them to easily manage and securely store data during the process of toxin discovery; and (vi) a detailed user manual is now available
Phenomenological BCS theory of the high- cuprates
A BCS model characterized by a phenomenological pair potential with on-site
(), nearest (), and next nearest () neighbour coupling
constants, and an empirical quasiparticle dispersion taken from angle-resolved
photoemission spectra is considered. The model can consistently explain the
experimental data concerning the pair state of the hole doped cuprates. Three
ingredients are required to make the interpretation possible: the existence of
flat bands, a very small effective on-site repulsion, and a slightly dominating
