Single-photon interference over 150-km transmission using silica-based integrated-optic interferometers for quantum cryptography

We have demonstrated single-photon interference over 150 km using time-division interferometers for quantum cryptography, which were composed of two integrated-optic asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and balanced gated-mode photon detectors. The observed fringe visibility was more than 80% after 150-km transmission.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Electronics Letter

International audienceThis paper proposes a first attempt to define a two scales kinetic theory to describe concentrated suspensions involving short fibers, nano-fibers or nanotubes. In this case, fiber-fiber interactions can not be neglected and rich microstructures issued from these interactions can be observed, involving a diversity of fibers clusters or aggregates with complex kinematics, and different sizes and shapes. These clusters can interact to create larger clusters and also break because the flow induced hydrodynamic forces. In this paper we propose a double-scale model to describe such microstructure: at the finest scale we study the cluster kinematic based on the behaviour of the rods that constitute it, at a coarser scale, we use clusters distribution to derive the effect of the clusters presence on the suspensions properties

Formation of a Nanoscale hcp Structure by Crystallization of an Amorphous Co_<91>Zr_7B_2 Alloy

A mostly single hcp phase with grain sizes ranging from 3 to 10 nm was found to form as a metastable phase in the crystallization process of an amorphous Co_Zr_7B_2 alloy. The temperature range, in which the nanoscale hcp structure forms, extends from 800 to 900 K and the further heating above 900 K causes the phase transition to ε-Co+Co_(Zr, B)_6. No distinct grain growth in the hcp structure is seen in the temperature range of 800 to 900 K. The hcp phase has a lattice parameter of a=0.2507 nm and c=0.4066 nm which is slightly different from that of pure ε-Co presumably because of the dissolution of Zr and B. The Co_Zr_9 amorphous alloy crystallizes directly to a mixed phase of ε-Co+cubic Co_Zr_6 with a large grain size of about 0.4μm through a polymorphic-type crystallization mode. It is therefore concluded that the addition of a small amount of boron is essential for the formation of the nanoscale hcp structure

Potassium ion (K+) is an essential and the most abundant intracellular cation in plants. The roles of K+ in various aspects of plant life are closely linked to its transport across biological membranes such as the plasma membrane and the tonoplast, which is mediated by membrane-bound transport proteins known as transporters and channels. Information on the molecular basis of K+ membrane transport in trees, especially in conifers, is currently limited. In this study, we isolated one complementary DNA, CjKUP1, which is homologous to known plant K+ transporters, from Cryptomeria japonica. Complementation tests using an Escherichia coli mutant, which is deficient in K+ uptake activity, was conducted to examine the K+ uptake function of the protein encoded by CjKUP1. Transformation of the K+-uptake-deficient mutant with CjKUP1 complemented the deficiency of this mutant. This result indicates that CjKUP1 has a function of K+ uptake. The expression levels of CjKUP1 in male strobili were markedly higher from late September to early October than in other periods. The expression levels in male and female strobili were higher than those in other organs such as needles, inner bark, differentiating xylem, and roots. These results indicate that CjKUP1 is mainly involved in K+ membrane transport in the cells of reproductive organs of C. japonica trees, especially in male strobili during pollen differentiation.ArticleTrees-Struct. The present report describes a case of variation of the ophthalmic artery observed in a 91-year-old Japanese woman at dissection in 1992. It was found that on one side, the ophthalmic artery originate from the middle meningeal artery, and the ophthalmic artery from the internal carotid artery was absent

Plasma von Willebrand factor (VWF), produced in and released from vascular endothelial cells by various stimuli including hypoxia, induces platelet aggregation under high shear stress and plays dual pivotal roles in haemostasis and thrombosis within arterioles, which are regulated by the size of vWF multimers (VWFMs). Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) have increased risk of thrombotic cardiovascular events, but the pathogenesis is unclear. We examined the relationship between VWF and OSA by measuring VWF antigen (VWF:Ag), VWFMs, VWF collagen binding activity (VWF:CB) and a disintegrin-like, metalloproteinase, and thrombospiondin type 1 motifs 13. A total of 58 OSA patients were enrolled. Blood samples were collected before sleep, after sleep, and after one night of nasal continuous positive airway pressure therapy. Based on VWFM analysis, OSA patients were classified into three groups; consistently normal VWFMs (group 1, n=29), increased high molecular weight (HMW)-VWFMs at 06:00 h (group 2, n=18), and decreased or absent HMW-VWFMs at 06:00 h (group 3, n=11). Patients in group 3 had significantly worse apnoea/hypopnoea index; VWF:CB followed a similar pattern. We observed a significant decrease in platelet count between 21:00 h and 06:00 h in OSA patients, potentially associated with reduced larger VWFMs together with decreased VWF:Ag levels. Severe OSA may contribute to an arterial pro-thrombotic state.博士(医学)・乙第1294号・平成24年5月28日Copyright © 2012 by the European Respiratory Societ
