    Design and Evaluation of English Oral Communication Course at Kansai University

    Educators, linguists, and anthropologists recognize that language reflects societalvalues, culture, and attitudes of the country where the language is spoken. The use of technology provides numerous activities where students can learn about the values, culture, and lifestyles of people living in other countries while practicing their English communication skills. This paper examines the use of videoconferencing between students at Kansai University and the University of Hawaii to develop language skills and increaseintercultural understanding. The authors describe learning activities to prepare students for the videoconferences, examine learning styles related to the use of technology, provide observations about technology use, and discuss changes in students’ intercultural sensitivity over one semester

    High-Field ESR Measurements of S=1/2 Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet BaCu3_3V2_2O8_8(OH)2_2

    High-field electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements have been performed on vesignieite BaCu3_3V2_2O8_8(OH)2_2, which is considered as a nearly ideal model substance of SS=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, in the temperature region from 1.9 to 265 K. The frequency region is from 60 to 360 GHz and the applied pulsed magnetic field is up to 16 T. Observed g-value and linewidth show the increase below 20 K, which suggest the development of the short range order. Moreover, a gapless spin liquid ground state is suggested from the frequency-field relation at 1.9 K.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, jpsj2 class file, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jp

    Third and fifth harmonic responses in viscous liquids

    International audienceWe review the works devoted to third and fifth harmonic susceptibilities in glasses, namely χ (3) 3 and χ (5) 5. We explain why these nonlinear responses are especially well adapted to test whether or not some amorphous correlations develop upon cooling. We show that the experimental frequency and temperature dependences of χ (3) 3 and of χ (5) 5 have anomalous features, since their behavior is qualitatively different to that of an ideal gas, which is the high-temperature limit of a fluid. Most of the works have interpreted this anomalous behavior as reflecting the growth, upon cooling, of amorphously ordered domains, as predicted by the general framework of Bouchaud and Biroli (BB). We explain why most—if not all—of the challenging interpretations can be recast in a way which is consistent with that of Bouchaud and Biroli. Finally, the comparison of the anomalous features of χ (5) 5 and of χ (3) 3 shows that the amorphously ordered domains are compact, i.e., the fractal dimension d f is close to the dimension d of space. This suggests that the glass transition of molecular liquids corresponds to a new universality class of critical phenomena
