Efficient Quantum Computation with Probabilistic Quantum Gates

    Get PDF
With a combination of the quantum repeater and the cluster state approaches, we show that efficient quantum computation can be constructed even if all the entangling quantum gates only succeed with an arbitrarily small probability p. The required computational overhead scales efficiently both with 1/p and n, where n is the number of qubits in the computation. This approach provides an efficient way to combat noise in a class of quantum computation implementation schemes, where the dominant noise leads to probabilistic signaled errors with an error probability 1-p far beyond any threshold requirement

    Does Your Bible Beep?

Recently I attended a chapel service where the preacher, instead of asking the audience to open their Bibles, told them to turn to a certain passage of Scripture in their mobile devices. Inherent in this statement is the assumption that people today are more prone to leave behind leather-bound versions of Scripture and instead opt for YouVersion or a Bible app on their phone or tablet. While this assumption may become increasingly prevalent, pastors and church members alike should be asking themselves whether or not they lose anything by only reading the Bible on their mobile devices. My contention is that Scripture, bound in a book on actual pages, may be of benefit to us for longterm retention, helping us effectively concentrate and meditate on God’s promises and fight sin

That Their Souls May Be Saved: The Theology and Practice of Jonathan Edwards on Church Discipline

A great deal of research has been done on the life and theology of Jonathan Edwards. However, there is a dearth of interest as it pertains to Edwards’s ecclesiology. As such, while certain moments in Edwards’s ministry dealing with excommunication have been dealt with, there is a need to look not only at the cases he oversaw, but also the theology that undergirded that practice of discipline. Setting Edwards in his historical context and looking specifically at both his ecclesiology and his doctrine of the perseverance of the saints, this article demonstrates how these doctrines coincided for Edwards to form a practice of church discipline that was exacting and rigorous in relation to many of his contemporaries in whose churches discipline was largely on the decline

Cavity QED with optically transported atoms

Ultracold 87^{87}Rb atoms are delivered into a high-finesse optical micro-cavity using a translating optical lattice trap and detected via the cavity field. The atoms are loaded into an optical lattice from a magneto-optic trap (MOT) and transported 1.5 cm into the cavity. Our cavity satisfies the strong-coupling requirements for a single intracavity atom, thus permitting real-time observation of single atoms transported into the cavity. This transport scheme enables us to vary the number of intracavity atoms from 1 to >>100 corresponding to a maximum atomic cooperativity parameter of 5400, the highest value ever achieved in an atom--cavity system. When many atoms are loaded into the cavity, optical bistability is directly measured in real-time cavity transmission.Comment: 4 figures, 4 page

Adapted Living Environment Lessons to Support All Students: A toolkit of strategies and scaffolds for teaching science to students with learning disabilities in an inclusive setting

Students with disabilities continue to lag behind their non-disabled peers in academic achievement. Continued support is required to help them bridge this gap, and realize academic success. Increasingly, students with mild to moderate disabilities are spending the majority of their school day mainstreamed into integrated, inclusive classes. While there are potential benefits for all parties to this arrangement, it can present challenges to the educator trying to balance multiple interest levels, learning styles and ability levels in the same classroom. The vast majority of special education students don’t require classroom modifications, or changes to the content delivered or expectations; but many do need accommodations or adaptations, changes to how material is learned. This project reviews available literature to determine the most successful accommodations for helping special education students be successful in inclusive science classes, and investigates how the principles of universal design can be utilized to apply suggested strategies to lessons for all students. The final project includes sample lessons and activities illustrating the use of the most recommended strategies for accommodating special educations students in a high school living environment class unit on cells and genetics. There is a special focus on active learning and hands on activities

The Steward of God: Exploring the Role and Function of Elders

    Get PDF
A variety of titles and images are used in the Scriptures to describe those who commit their lives to serve in pastoral ministry. Those who are called to such a vocation are described as shepherds or pastors (Eph 4:11), elders (1 Pet 5:1–5), and overseers (1 Tim 3:1), which are all terms replete with meaning and significance. Through these various titles we receive a more full-orbed understanding of what the role and function of a minister truly is. This is due to the fact that words like shepherd and overseer can function as metaphors, describing the realities of pastoral ministry. Therefore, if a term used to describe pastoral ministry were to be overlooked it would leave a considerable gap in understanding regarding the true nature of the pastorate. It is my contention that terms such as “steward” (οἰκονόμος), and “stewardship” (οἰκονομία) have been relatively overlooked in conceiving of the function and role of one who serves as a pastor. This paper will demonstrate through an exegetical analysis of these words—along with relative cognates—that the overseer is responsible as a steward for rightly proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, and for overseeing the souls of the people in their local church. This metaphor for pastoral ministry reveals a crucial connection between preaching the Word of God and the shepherding and oversight of the congregation as a whole. If this is true there are implications for pastors as they seek to responsibly proclaim the truth of God’s Word and watch over the spiritual temperament of the people within their congregation, knowing they will have to give an account to God as a steward. As such, it will be argued that this image gives greater depth and clarity to the role and function of one who serves in pastoral ministry. This work will begin to delve into this matter by looking at the literal occurrences of the terms οἰκονόμος and οἰκονομία in the NT, followed by the metaphorical uses, noting most specifically those texts that give clarity to the meaning this metaphor brings to the pastoral task. After observing these occurrences and their significance, the way in which stewardship language influences and unites the ministerial responsibilities of preaching and shepherding will be taken into account. Finally, a theological synthesis will be proposed regarding our findings and the implications that this metaphor may have for pastoral ministry in a present-day local church context
