Later applications may be more effective because they may prevent seed formation for that year and also prevent the plant from recovering from spraying, as apparently with the early spraying.     Transition metal nitrides containing metal ions in high oxidation states are a significant goal for the discovery of new families of semiconducting materials. Most metal nitride compounds prepared at high temperature and high pressure from the elements have metallic bonding. However amorphous or nanocrystalline compounds can be prepared via metal-organic chemistry routes giving rise to precursors with a high nitrogen:metal ratio. Using X-ray diffraction in parallel with high pressure laser heating in the diamond anvil cell this work highlights the possibility of retaining the composition and structure of a metastable nanocrystalline precursor under high pressure-temperature conditions. Specifically, a nanocrystalline Hf3N4 with a tetragonal defect-fluorite structure can be crystallized under high-P,T conditions. Increasing the pressure and temperature of crystallization leads to the formation of a fully recoverable orthorhombic (defect cottunite-structured) polymorph. This approach identifies a novel class of pathways to the synthesis of new crystalline nitrogen-rich transition metal nitrides

    Histopathology of tissue samples is used to determine the progression of cancer usually by staining and visual analysis. It is recognised that disease progression from healthy tissue to cancerous is accompanied by spectral signature changes in the mid-infrared range. In this work, FTIR spectroscopic imaging in transmission mode using a focal plane array (96 × 96 pixels) has been applied to the characterisation of Barrett's oesophageal adenocarcinoma. To correct optical aberrations, infrared transparent lenses were used of the same material (CaF2) as the slide on which biopsies were fixed. The lenses acted as an immersion objective, reducing scattering and improving spatial resolution. A novel mapping approach using a sliding lens is presented where spectral images obtained with added lenses are stitched together such that the dataset contained a representative section of the oesophageal tissue. Images were also acquired in transmission mode using high-magnification optics for enhanced spatial resolution, as well as with a germanium micro-ATR objective. The reduction of scattering was assessed using k-means clustering. The same tissue section map, which contained a region of high grade dysplasia, was analysed using hierarchical clustering analysis. A reduction of the trough at 1077 cm−1 in the second derivative spectra was identified as an indicator of high grade dysplasia. In addition, the spatial resolution obtained with the lens using high-magnification optics was assessed by measurements of a sharp interface of polymer laminate, which was also compared with that achieved with micro ATR-FTIR imaging. In transmission mode using the lens, it was determined to be 8.5 μm and using micro-ATR imaging, the resolution was 3 μm for the band at a wavelength of ca. 3 μm. The spatial resolution was also assessed with and without the added lens, in normal and high-magnification modes using a USAF target. Spectroscopic images of cells in transmission mode using two lenses are also presented, which are necessary for correcting chromatic aberration and refraction in both the condenser and objective. The use of lenses is shown to be necessary for obtaining high-quality spectroscopic images of cells in transmission mode and proves the applicability of the pseudo hemisphere approach for this and other microfluidic systems

    The gluon distribution f(x, k_t^2,mu^2), unintegrated over the transverse momentum k_t of the gluon, satisfies the angular-ordered CCFM equation which interlocks the dependence on the scale k_t with the scale \mu of the probe. We show how, to leading logarithmic accuracy, the equation can be simplified to a single scale problem. In particular we demonstrate how to determine the two-scale unintegrated distribution f(x,k_t^2,mu^2) from knowledge of the integrated gluon obtained from a unified scheme embodying both BFKL and DGLAP evolution.Comment: 16 pages LaTeX, 3 eps figure

    Differential regulation of TNF-α and IL-1β production from endotoxin stimulated human monocytes by phosphodiesterase inhibitors

    The effect of selective PDE-I (vinpocetine), PDE-III (milrinone, CI-930), PDE-IV (rolipram, nitroquazone), and PDE-V (zaprinast) isozyme inhibitors on TNF-α and IL-1β production from LPS stimulated human monocytes was investigated. The PDE-IV inhibitors caused a concentration dependent inhibition of TNF-α production, but only partially inhibited IL-1β at high concentrations. High concentrations of the PDE-III inhibitors weakly inhibited TNF-α, but had no effect on IL-1β production. PDE-V inhibition was associated with an augmentation of cytokine secretion. Studies with combinations of PDE isozyme inhibitors indicated that PDE-III and PDE-V inhibitors modulate rolipram's suppression of TNF production in an additive manner. These data confirm that TNF-α and IL-1β production from LPS stimulated human monocytes are differentially regulated, and suggest that PDE-IV inhibitors have the potential to suppress TNF levels in man

    The combined use of selective deuteration and double resonance experiments in assigning the 1H resonances of valine and tyrosine residues of dihydrofolate reductase

    AbstractSelective deuteration is a general solution to the resolution problem which limits the application of double resonance experiments to the assignment of the 1H NMR spectra of proteins. Spin-decoupling and NOE experiments have been carried out on Lactobacillus casei dihydrofolate reductase and on selectively deuterated derivatives of the enzyme containing either [γ-2H6]Val or (α,δ2,ϵ1-2H3]His, [α,δ1,δ2,ϵ1,ϵ2,ζ-2H6]Phe, [α,δ1,ϵ3,ζ2,ζ3,η2-2H6]Trp and [α,ϵ1,ϵ2-2H3]Tyr. When combined with ring-current shift calculations based on the crystal structure of the enzyme, these experiments allow us to assign 1H resonances of Val 61, Val 115, Tyr 46 and Tyr 68

    Coal ash derived sulfur and mercury in the Dan River invertebrate food web

    In February of 2014, a coal ash spill occurred in the Dan River in Eden, NC. Coal ash is a potential sulfur and heavy metal source and can disrupt aquatic and riparian food webs. Sulfur can stimulate mercury methylation, which bioaccumulates in the food web, threatening human and wildlife health. This study aimed to determine if dominant river and riparian invertebrates assimilated coal ash derived sulfur in relation to distance from the spill using stable isotopes of sulfur and carbon. Sulfur d34S analysis showed that approximately 1.5 years after the spill, riparian spiders downstream from the spill were more enriched in 34S than upstream spiders, consistent with incorporation of coal ash derived sulfur. Spider d34S also increased with distance from the spill site. d34S of the Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea, declined downstream of the spill site, a change that was not consistent with coal ash S, and d13C suggested that Corbicula shifted their feeding mode in relation to location from the spill. Methylmercury analysis for both clams and spiders were not significantly different between upstream and downstream sites, indicating that mercury from the spill was a not significant problem in these components of the Dan River food web
