Polynomial Response Surface Approximations for the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of a High Speed Civil Transport
Surrogate functions have become an important tool in multidisciplinary design optimization to deal with noisy functions, high computational cost, and the practical difficulty of integrating legacy disciplinary computer codes. A combination of mathematical, statistical, and engineering techniques, well known in other contexts, have made polynomial surrogate functions viable for MDO. Despite the obvious limitations imposed by sparse high fidelity data in high dimensions and the locality of low order polynomial approximations, the success of the panoply of techniques based on polynomial response surface approximations for MDO shows that the implementation details are more important than the underlying approximation method (polynomial, spline, DACE, kernel regression, etc.). This paper surveys some of the ancillary techniquesâstatistics, global search, parallel computing, variable complexity modelingâthat augment the construction and use of polynomial surrogates
Role of many-body entanglement in decoherence processes
A pure state decoheres into a mixed state as it entangles with an
environment. When an entangled two-mode system is embedded in a thermal
environment, however, each mode may not be entangled with its environment by
their simple linear interaction. We consider an exactly solvable model to study
the dynamics of a total system, which is composed of an entangled two-mode
system and a thermal environment, and also an array of infinite beam splitters.
It is shown that many-body entanglement of the system and the environment plays
a crucial role in the process of disentangling the system.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Intrinsic decoherence and classical-quantum correspondence in two coupled delta-kicked rotors
We show that classical-quantum correspondence of center of mass motion in two
coupled delta-kicked rotors can be obtained from intrinsic decoherence of the
system itself which occurs due to the entanglement of the center of mass motion
to the internal degree of freedom without coupling to external environment

Precision spectroscopy with two correlated atoms
We discuss techniques that allow for long coherence times in laser
spectroscopy experiments with two trapped ions. We show that for this purpose
not only entangled ions prepared in decoherence-free subspaces can be used but
also a pair of ions that are not entangled but subject to the same kind of
phase noise. We apply this technique to a measurement of the electric
quadrupole moment of the 3d D5/2 state of 40Ca+ and to a measurement of the
linewidth of an ultrastable laser exciting a pair of 40Ca+ ions
Intrinsic Decoherence Dynamics in Smooth Hamiltonian Systems: Quantum-classical Correspondence
A direct classical analog of the quantum dynamics of intrinsic decoherence in
Hamiltonian systems, characterized by the time dependence of the linear entropy
of the reduced density operator, is introduced. The similarities and
differences between the classical and quantum decoherence dynamics of an
initial quantum state are exposed using both analytical and computational
results. In particular, the classicality of early-time intrinsic decoherence
dynamics is explored analytically using a second-order perturbative treatment,
and an interesting connection between decoherence rates and the stability
nature of classical trajectories is revealed in a simple approximate classical
theory of intrinsic decoherence dynamics. The results offer new insights into
decoherence, dynamics of quantum entanglement, and quantum chaos.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Physical Review
Current reversal with type-I intermittency in deterministic inertia ratchets
The intermittency is investigated when the current reversal occurs in a
deterministic inertia ratchet system. To determine which type the intermittency
belongs to, we obtain the return map of velocities of particle using
stroboscopic recording, and numerically calculate the distribution of average
laminar length . The distribution follows the scaling law of , the characteristic relation of type-I
intermittency.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
