    Real Interest Rate Linkages in the Pacific Basin Region

    This paper examines the linkage of real interest rates of a group of Pacific-Basin countries with a focus on East Asia. We consider monthly real interest rates of the US, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Thailand from 1980 and 2004. The impulse response analysis and half-life estimation are conducted in a multivariate setting, adopting the bias-corrected bootstrap as a means of statistical inference. It is found that the degree of capital market integration has increased after the Asian financial crisis in 1997. The evidence suggests that the crisis has substantially changed the nature of the short run interactions among the real interest rates. Before the crisis, both the US and Japanese capital markets dominated the region. However, after the crisis, the dominance of the Japanese market has completely disappeared, while the US remains as a sole dominant player.Financial crisis, Bias-correction, Bootstrapping, Capital market Integration, Half-life, Impulse response analysis, Vector autoregression.

    This paper examines linkage of real interest rates for a group of selected countries in East Asia. The countries under study include Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The long run relationship is tested and estimated using the conitegration analysis. We also have conducted the impulse response analysis based on unrestricted vector autoregression, using the bias-corrected wild bootstrap for statistical inference.     Bremsstrahlung Radiation At a Vacuum Bubble Wall

    When charged particles collide with a vacuum bubble, they can radiate strong electromagnetic waves due to rapid deceleration. Owing to the energy loss of the particles by this bremsstrahlung radiation, there is a non-negligible damping pressure acting on the bubble wall even when thermal equilibrium is maintained. In the non-relativistic region, this pressure is proportional to the velocity of the wall and could have influenced the bubble dynamics in the early universe.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, revtex, to appear in JKP

    Heisenberg-picture approach to the exact quantum motion of a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator

    In the Heisenberg picture, the generalized invariant and exact quantum motions are found for a time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator. We find the eigenstate and the coherent state of the invariant and show that the dispersions of these quantum states do not depend on the external force.     Tonicity response element binding protein associated with neuronal cell death in the experimental diabetic retinopathy

    AIM: To study the contribution of tonicity response element binding protein (TonEBP) in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death of diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: Diabetes was induced in C57BL/6 mice by five consecutive intraperitoneal injections of 55 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ). Control mice received vehicle (phosphate -buffered saline). All mice were killed 2mo after injections, and the extent of cell death and the protein expression levels of TonEBP and aldose reductase (AR) were examined. RESULTS: The TonEBP and AR protein levels and the death of RGC were significantly increased in the retinas of diabetic mice compared with controls 2mo after the induction of diabetes. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) -mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) -positive signals co -localized with TonEBP immunoreactive RGC. These changes were increased in the diabetic retinas compared with controls. CONCLUSION: The present data show that AR and TonEBP are upregulated in the DR and TonEBP may contribute to apoptosis of RGC in the DR.close2

    Electron-hole asymmetry in Co- and Mn-doped SrFe2As2

    Phase diagram of electron and hole-doped SrFe2As2 single crystals is investigated using Co and Mn substitution at the Fe-sites. We found that the spin-density-wave state is suppressed by both dopants, but the superconducting phase appears only for Co (electron)-doping, not for Mn (hole)-doping. Absence of the superconductivity by Mn-doping is in sharp contrast to the hole-doped system with K-substitution at the Sr sites. Distinct structural change, in particular the increase of the Fe-As distance by Mn-doping is important to have a magnetic and semiconducting ground state as confirmed by first principles calculations. The absence of electron-hole symmetry in the Fe-site-doped SrFe2As2 suggests that the occurrence of high-Tc superconductivity is sensitive to the structural modification rather than the charge doping.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Weakly coupled s=1/2s = 1/2 quantum spin singlets in Ba3_{3}Cr2_{2}O8_{8}

    Using single crystal inelastic neutron scattering with and without application of an external magnetic field and powder neutron diffraction, we have characterized magnetic interactions in Ba3_3Cr2_2O8_8. Even without field, we found that there exist three singlet-to-triplet excitation modes in (h,h,l)(h,h,l) scattering plane. Our complete analysis shows that the three modes are due to spatially anisotropic interdimer interactions that are induced by local distortions of the tetrahedron of oxygens surrounding the Jahn-Teller active Cr5+(3d1)^{5+} (3d^1). The strong intradimer coupling of J0=2.38(2)J_0 = 2.38(2) meV and weak interdimer interactions (Jinter0.52(2)|J_{\rm inter}| \leq 0.52(2) meV) makes Ba3_3Cr2_2O8_8 a good model system for weakly-coupled s=1/2s = 1/2 quantum spin dimers

    We present the Heisenberg-picture approach to the quantum evolution of the scalar fields in an expanding FRW universe which incorporates relatively simply the initial quantum conditions such as the vacuum state, the thermal equilibrium state, and the coherent state. We calculate the Wightman function, two-point function, and correlation function of a massive scalar field. We find the quantum evolution of fluctuations of a self-interacting field perturbatively and discuss the renormalization of field equations.Comment: 15 pages, RevTeX, no figure

    External magnetic field effects on a distorted kagome antiferromagnet

    We report bulk magnetization, and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements under an external magnetic field, HH, on the weakly coupled distorted kagome system, Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl. Our results show that the ordered state below 6.7 K is a canted antiferromagnet and consists of large antiferromagnetic acac-components and smaller ferromagnetic bb-components. By first-principle calculations and linear spin wave analysis, we present a simple spin hamiltonian with non-uniform nearest neighbor exchange interactions resulting in a system of coupled spin trimers with a single-ion anisotropy that can qualitatively reproduce the spin dynamics of Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl.Comment: 5 figure
