A practical diagram to determine the residual longitudinal strength of grounded ship in Northern Sea Route
In this study, a useful solution is proposed for assessing the safety of the ship’s hull damaged by grounding in Northern Sea Route (NSR) or Arctic sea. In particular, the residual ultimate longitudinal strength of grounding damaged ship can be predicted by the grounding damage index (GDI) concept. Due to the global warming effects, the Arctic glaciers have been gradually melting, and it may bring us the new North Pole routes. However, there are uncertainties on many causes that can lead to grounding accident of the commercial vessels. In this regard, residual ultimate longitudinal strength of grounding damaged commercial ship in Arctic sea is investigated. Five (5) temperatures: room temperature (RT), −20°C, −40°C, −60°C and −80°C were adopted to consider the cold temperature effect in NSR. The Panamax class oil tanker was selected for the investigation of residual ultimate longitudinal strength of grounding damaged ship. Fifty (50) reliable damage scenarios were adopted for the evaluation of structural health by utilising Residual strength versus GDI (R-D) diagram method. From this study, a modified R-D diagram is proposed which can consider grounding damage with cold temperature effect. The obtained outcome will be useful for assessing the safety of the grounded ships in Arctic sea region by measuring the grounding damage amount and surrounding air temperature

Heteroepitaxal fabrication and structural characterizations of ultrafine GaN/ZnO coaxial nanorod heterostructures
We report on heteroepitaxial fabrication and structural characterizations of ultrafine GaN/ZnO coaxial nanorod heterostructures. The coaxial nanorod heterostructures were fabricated by epitaxial growth of a GaN layer on ultrafine ZnO nanorods. Epitaxial growth and precise control of GaN overlayer thickness were obtained by low pressure metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy. ZnO nanorods grown on Si and sapphire substrates using catalyst-free metalorganic chemical vapor deposition exhibited diameters as small as 7 nm. Furthermore, structural properties of the coaxial nanorod heterostructures were investigated using both synchrotron-radiation x-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Casimir forces on a silicon micromechanical chip
Quantum fluctuations give rise to van der Waals and Casimir forces that
dominate the interaction between electrically neutral objects at sub-micron
separations. Under the trend of miniaturization, such quantum electrodynamical
effects are expected to play an important role in micro- and nano-mechanical
devices. Nevertheless, utilization of Casimir forces on the chip level remains
a major challenge because all experiments so far require an external object to
be manually positioned close to the mechanical element. Here, by integrating a
force-sensing micromechanical beam and an electrostatic actuator on a single
chip, we demonstrate the Casimir effect between two micromachined silicon
components on the same substrate. A high degree of parallelism between the two
near-planar interacting surfaces can be achieved because they are defined in a
single lithographic step. Apart from providing a compact platform for Casimir
force measurements, this scheme also opens the possibility of tailoring the
Casimir force using lithographically defined components of non-conventional
shapes
MERS-CoV antibody responses 1 Year after symptom onset, South Korea, 2015
We investigated the kinetics of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) neutralizing and spike protein antibody titers over the course of 1 year in 11 patients who were confirmed by reverse transcription PCR to have been infected during the outbreak in South Korea in 2015. Robust antibody responses were detected in all survivors who had severe disease; responses remained detectable, albeit with some waning, for <1 year. The duration of viral RNA detection (but not viral load) in sputum significantly correlated with the antibody response magnitude. The MERS S1 ELISA antibody titers correlated well with the neutralizing antibody response. Antibody titers in 4 of 6 patients who had mild illness were undetectable even though most had evidence of pneumonia. This finding implies that MERS-CoV seroepidemiologic studies markedly underestimate the extent of mild and asymptomatic infection. Obtaining convalescent-phase plasma with high antibody titers to treat MERS will be challenging.published_or_final_versio
Structure and dielectric properties of cubic Bi<inf>2</inf>(Zn <inf>1/3</inf>Ta<inf>2/3</inf>)<inf>2</inf> O<inf>7</inf> thin films
Pyrochlore Bi2(Zn1/3Ta2/3)2 O7 (BZT) films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates. In contrast to bulk monoclinic BZT ceramics, the BZT films have a cubic structure mediated by an interfacial layer. The dielectric properties of the cubic BZT films [ε∼177, temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC) ∼-170 ppm/°C] are much different from those of monoclinic BZT ceramics (ε∼61, TCC ∼+60 ppm/°C). Increasing the thickness of the BZT films returns the crystal structure to the monoclinic phase, which allows the dielectric properties of the BZT films to be tuned without changing their chemical composition. © 2009 American Institute of Physics
Comparison of serological assays in human Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-coronavirus infection
Plaque reduction neutralisation tests (PRNT), microneutralisation (MN), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-spike pseudoparticle neutralisation (ppNT) and MERS S1-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibody titres were compared using 95 sera from 17 patients with MERS, collected two to 46 days after symptom onset. Neutralisation tests correlated well with each other and moderately well with S1 ELISA. Moreover to compare antigenic similarity of genetically diverse MERS-CoV clades, the response of four sera from two patients sampled at two time periods during the course of illness were tested by 90% PRNT. Genetically diverse MERS-CoV clades were antigenically homogenous.published_or_final_versio
Antioxidant effects on hypoxia-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in rat rotator cuff fibroblasts
Most cells, highly sensitive to oxygen levels, undergo apoptosis under hypoxia. Therefore, the involvement of hypoxia in rotator cuff tendon degeneration has been proposed. While previous studies have reported that hypoxia induces apoptosis in rotator cuff fibroblasts (RCFs), little research has investigated whether antioxidants have cytoprotective effects against RCF apoptosis. The present study aimed at determining whether the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) exerted cytoprotective effects against hypoxia-induced RCF apoptosis. Third-passage rat RCFs were divided into normoxia, NAC, hypoxia and NAC-hypoxia groups. The hypoxia inducer was 1,000 µmol/L cobalt chloride (CoCl2); the antioxidant was 20 mmol/L NAC. Expressions of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), cell viability, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, apoptosis rates as well as expressions of cleaved caspase-3, cleaved poly ADP-ribose polymerase-1 (PARP-1), vascular endothelial growth factors-β (VEGF-β) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) were evaluated. Expression of HIF-1α and HO-1 was significantly higher in the hypoxia group than in the normoxia group (p < 0.001). Cell viability was significantly lower in the hypoxia group than in the normoxia group (p < 0.001). Intracellular ROS production, apoptosis rate and expressions of cleaved caspase-3, cleaved PARP-1, VEGF-β and MMP-2 were significantly higher in the hypoxia group than in the normoxia group (p < 0.001). All these responses were significantly attenuated by pre-treatment with NAC (p ≤ 0.001). ROS were involved in hypoxic RCF apoptosis induced by CoCl2; NAC, an ROS scavenger, inhibited hypoxia-induced RCF apoptosis by inhibiting ROS production
Observation of the thermal Casimir force
Quantum theory predicts the existence of the Casimir force between
macroscopic bodies, due to the zero-point energy of electromagnetic field modes
around them. This quantum fluctuation-induced force has been experimentally
observed for metallic and semiconducting bodies, although the measurements to
date have been unable to clearly settle the question of the correct
low-frequency form of the dielectric constant dispersion (the Drude model or
the plasma model) to be used for calculating the Casimir forces. At finite
temperature a thermal Casimir force, due to thermal, rather than quantum,
fluctuations of the electromagnetic field, has been theoretically predicted
long ago. Here we report the experimental observation of the thermal Casimir
force between two gold plates. We measured the attractive force between a flat
and a spherical plate for separations between 0.7 m and 7 m. An
electrostatic force caused by potential patches on the plates' surfaces is
included in the analysis. The experimental results are in excellent agreement
(reduced of 1.04) with the Casimir force calculated using the Drude
model, including the T=300 K thermal force, which dominates over the quantum
fluctuation-induced force at separations greater than 3 m. The plasma
model result is excluded in the measured separation range.Comment: 6 page
Pathwise Sensitivity Analysis in Transient Regimes
The instantaneous relative entropy (IRE) and the corresponding instanta-
neous Fisher information matrix (IFIM) for transient stochastic processes are
pre- sented in this paper. These novel tools for sensitivity analysis of
stochastic models serve as an extension of the well known relative entropy rate
(RER) and the corre- sponding Fisher information matrix (FIM) that apply to
stationary processes. Three cases are studied here, discrete-time Markov
chains, continuous-time Markov chains and stochastic differential equations. A
biological reaction network is presented as a demonstration numerical example
