    The susceptibility of Anopheles lesteri to infection with Korean strain of Plasmodium vivax

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Following its recent re-emergence, malaria has gained renewed attention as a serious infectious disease in Korea. Three species of the Hyrcanusgroup, <it>Anopheles lesteri, Anopheles sinensis </it>and <it>Anopheles pullus</it>, have long been suspected malaria vectors. However, opinions about their vector ability are controversial. The present study was designed with the aim of determining the susceptibility of these mosquitoes to a Korean isolate of <it>Plasmodium vivax</it>. Also, <it>An. sinensis </it>is primarily suspected to be vector of malaria in Korea, but in Thailand, the same species is described to have less medical importance. Therefore, comparative susceptibility of Thai and Korean strains of <it>An. sinensis </it>with Thai strain of <it>P. vivax </it>may be helpful to understand whether these geographically different strains exhibit differences in their susceptibility or not.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The comparative susceptibility of <it>An. lesteri</it>, <it>An. sinensis </it>and <it>An. pullus </it>was studied by feeding laboratory-reared mosquitoes on blood from patients carrying gametocytes from Korea and Thailand.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In experimental feeding with Korean strain of <it>P. vivax</it>, oocysts developed in <it>An. lesteri</it>, <it>An. sinensis </it>and <it>An. pullus</it>. Salivary gland sporozoites were detected only in <it>An. lesteri </it>and <it>An. sinensis </it>but not in <it>An. pullus</it>. Large differences were found in the number of sporozoites in the salivary glands, with <it>An. lesteri </it>carrying much higher densities, up to 2,105 sporozoites in a single microscope field of 750 × 560 μM, whereas a maximum of 14 sporozoites were found in any individual salivary gland of <it>An. sinensis</it>. Similar results were obtained from a susceptibility test of two different strains of <it>An. sinensis </it>to Thai isolate of <it>P. vivax</it>, and differences in vector susceptibility according to geographical variation were not detected.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The high sporozoite rate and sporozoite loads of <it>An. lesteri </it>indicate that this species is highly susceptible to infection with <it>P. vivax</it>. <it>Anopheles sinensis </it>appears to have a markedly reduced ability to develop salivary gland infection, whilst in <it>An. pullus</it>, no sporozoites were found in the salivary glands. Provided that the survival rate of <it>An. lesteri </it>is sufficiently high in the field, it would be a highly competent vector of vivax malaria.</p

    Seasonal Prevalence of Mosquitoes, Including Vectors of Brugian Filariasis, in Southern Islands of the Republic of Korea

    A survey of mosquitoes, including the vector status of Brugia malayi filariasis and their relative larval density, was conducted from 2002 to 2005 at several southern remote islands of Jeollanam-do (province), Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju-do, Korea, where filariasis was previously endemic. Overall, a total of 9 species belonging to 7 genera were collected. Ochlerotatus togoi (formerly known as Aedes togoi), Anopheles (Hyrcanus) group, and Culex pipiens were the predominant species captured at all areas. Oc. togoi larvae were most frequently collected at salinity levels <0.5% during June and July, with densities decreasing sharply during the rainy season in August. The most likely explanation for the eradication of filariasis in these areas is suggested to be an aggressive treatment program executed during the 1970s and the 1990s. However, high prevalence of the vector mosquitoes may constitute a potential risk for reemerging of brugian filariasis in these areas

    Pion and Kaon Electromagnetic Form Factors in a SUL(3)SUR(3)SU_{L}(3)\otimes SU_{R}(3) Effective Lagrangian

    A SU(2) effective lagrangian is extended to a SUL(3)SUR(3)SU_{L}(3)\otimes SU_{R}(3) by including the vector and axial vector meson. With this effective lagrangian, electromagnetic form factors of charged pion and kaon are calculated. The pseudoscalar meson loops are taken into account. Good agreement with experimental data is obtained for those form factors. Decay widths of ρππ\rho\to \pi\pi and ϕK+K\phi\to K^{+}K^{-} are also calculated and shown to agree with experimental data very well.Comment: 19pages, 7figure

    Nomograms for Prediction of Disease Recurrence in Patients with Primary Ta, T1 Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder

    We developed nomograms to predict disease recurrence in patients with Ta, T1 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. Thirty-eight training hospitals participated in this retrospective multicenter study. Between 1998 and 2002, a total of 1,587 patients with newly diagnosed non-muscle invasive bladder cancer were enrolled in this study. Patients with prior histories of bladder cancer, non-transitional cell carcinoma, or a follow-up duration of less than 12 months were excluded. With univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, we constructed nomograms to predict disease recurrence, and internal validation was performed using statistical techniques. Three-year and five-year recurrence-free rates were 64.3% and 55.3%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that age (hazard ratio [HR]=1.437, p<0.001), tumor size (HR=1.328, p=0.001), multiplicity (HR=1.505, p<0.001), tumor grade (HR=1.347, p=0.007), concomitant carcinoma in situ (HR=1.611, p=0.007), and intravesical therapy (HR=0.681, p<0.001) were independent predictors for disease recurrence. Based on these prognostic factors, nomograms for the prediction of disease recurrence were developed. These nomograms can be used to predict the probability of disease recurrence in patients with newly diagnosed Ta, T1 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. They may be useful for patient counseling, clinical trial design, and patient follow-up planning

    Persistent Pemphigus Vulgaris Showing Features of Tufted Hair Folliculitis

    Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune blistering disease that commonly involves the scalp. Lesions of pemphigus vulgaris that persist on the scalp for a long period may be accompanied by tufted hair folliculitis. Only two previous accounts of tufted hair folliculitis developing in a lesion of pemphigus vulgaris have been reported. We report a 51-year-old-man with erosions and clusters of hair on the scalp. The scalp lesion had persisted for about 20 years. A histopathological examination of the skin lesion on the scalp revealed separation of the epidermis and clusters of several adjacent hair follicles. The patient was diagnosed with persistent pemphigus vulgaris of the scalp showing features of tufted hair folliculitis

    Genetic polymorphism of merozoite surface protein-1 and merozoite surface protein-2 in Plasmodium falciparum field isolates from Myanmar

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) and MSP-2 of <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>are potential vaccine candidate antigens for malaria vaccine development. However, extensive genetic polymorphism of the antigens in field isolates of <it>P. falciparum </it>represents a major obstacle for the development of an effective vaccine. In this study, genetic polymorphism of MSP-1 and MSP-2 among <it>P. falciparum </it>field isolates from Myanmar was analysed.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 63 <it>P. falciparum </it>infected blood samples, which were collected from patients attending a regional hospital in Mandalay Division, Myanmar, were used in this study. The regions flanking the highly polymorphic characters, block 2 for MSP-1 and block 3 for MSP-2, were genotyped by allele-specific nested-PCR to analyse the population diversity of the parasite. Sequence analysis of the polymorphic regions of MSP-1 and MSP-2 was also conducted to identify allelic diversity in the parasite population.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Diverse allelic polymorphism of MSP-1 and MSP-2 was identified in <it>P. falciparum </it>isolates from Myanmar and most of the infections were determined to be mixed infections. Sequence analysis of MSP-1 block 2 revealed that 14 different alleles for MSP-1 (5 for K1 type and 9 for MAD20 type) were identified. For MSP-2 block 3, a total of 22 alleles (7 for FC27 type and 15 for 3D7 type) were identified.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Extensive genetic polymorphism with diverse allele types was identified in MSP-1 and MSP-2 in <it>P. falciparum </it>field isolates from Myanmar. A high level of mixed infections was also observed, as was a high degree of multiplicity of infection.</p

    Estimating the malaria transmission of Plasmodium vivax based on serodiagnosis

    Abstract Background: Plasmodium vivax re-emerged in 1993 and has now become a major public health problem during the summer season in South Korea. The aim of this study was to interpret and understand the meaning of seroepidemiological studies for developing the best malaria control programme in South Korea. Methods: Blood samples were collected in Gimpo city, Paju city, Yeoncheon County, Cheorwon County and Goseong County of high risk area in South Korea. Microscopy was performed to identify patients infected with P. vivax. Antibody detection for P. vivax was performed using indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Results: A total of 1,574 blood samples was collected from participants in the study areas and evaluated against three parameters: IFAT positive rate, annual antibody positive index (AAPI), and annual parasite index (API). The IFAT positive rate was 7.24% (n = 114). Of the five study areas, Gimpo had the highest IFAT positive rate (13.68%) and AAPI (4.63). Yeongcheon had the highest API in 2005 (2.06) while Gimpo had the highest API in 2006 (5.00). No correlation was observed between any of the three parameters and study sites&apos; distance from the demilitarized zone (DMZ). Conclusions: These results showed that P. vivax antibody levels could provide useful information about the prevalence of malaria in endemic areas. Furthermore, AAPI results for each year showed a closer relationship to API the following year than the API of the same year and thus could be helpful in predicting malaria transmission risks
